“Success” in the Planetary defense drill.

In 2019, a planetary defense drill was carried out where 240 experts from all over the world participated, gathered in Washington during the international astronautics planetary defense conference, a drill was made on how to prevent an asteroid of about 300 meters in diameter from impacting with the earth on April 29, 2027.

I clarify it is a drill there is no asteroid that comes on a collision course with the earth on April 29, 2027 and for this drill that concentrated all that period of time in just one week, all available resources were mobilized observatories, industry space, ships, weapons, everything necessary, of course I repeat in a simulated way.

The mission was concentrated in a week to fine-tune how to divert it, how to destroy it and how to act in case of not being able to divert it, the result of the drill was a real failure and we lost New York, it directly hit Central Park, it was a disaster.

In 2020, a new planetary defense exercise was proposed to see if humanity was capable of deflecting or avoiding the impact of an asteroid. It turns out that the asteroid also made a simulated impact in the center of Europe.

Another drill was planned in 2021, it began in 2021 but the results were published only a week ago, it focused on detecting and monitoring a potentially dangerous asteroid, for this purpose more than 100 astronomers from around the world were summoned to participated in this real exercise and what was done was to delete an asteroid of a real asteroid from the database, to try to detect it again correctly it was done in a kind of clean slate of that asteroid, a real asteroid in this case.

Not only was it rediscovered during the exercise these astronomers did but its chances of hitting earth were constantly evaluated as it was tracked and in the end the possibility of impact was ruled out, the asteroid used for this drill was the famous Apophis which it is about 350 meters in diameter and whose date of closest approach to earth is April 13, 2000 29 it will pass that day at about 38,000 12 kilometers away, which is almost the distance at which geostationary satellites orbit, specifically, they are 35,000 786 kilometers.

This Apophis steroid is real, the data is real, the approximation of April 13, 2029 is also real, but the problem is that in this specific case, what the scientists did in the exercise was not a planetary defense exercise to try to divert to an asteroid or prevent it from impacting the earth, what they just did was observe where it was and see what happened.

But I don't know, it seems to me that it is the initial plan of the previous exercises in which all the means were used to try to deflect or destroy the asteroid, it seems to me that this particular drill of 2021 that they have said has been a success has actually been a little rigged, rigged because an asteroid with a collision course with the earth was not diverted or destroyed.

In addition, the drill has been secondary news, not many media outlets have come out, but I think these drills that they have done are a very important issue, these drills allow us to fine-tune and prepare technologies to avoid a disaster, a disaster can always appear asteroid on a collision course with the earth, hopefully a small asteroid, those of more than a kilometer will be practically all localized and do not pose a danger to us in the next 100 years but those of less than 150 meters there are still many to discover and they can do a lot of damage, they wouldn't destroy the earth like an asteroid like the one that killed off the dinosaurs, but they would cause a fairly important regional catastrophe.
