The Peregrin mission has been lost

The Peregrin mission has been lost, the lunar lander of the private company Astrobotic could not fulfill its mission and has returned to Earth to disintegrate in the atmosphere over the Pacific Ocean, it was on January 18, in a controlled re-entry.

These images are from after the launch on January 8 with the Vulcan rocket that was responsible for sending the pilgrim ship into space, the Vulcan rocket is from the United launch Alliance company and there you can see the ship separating from the Vulcan rocket.

It is always a great loss to destroy a ship, but what failed? After launch everything seemed to be going well, but in space the ship suffered a failure in the propulsion system, it seems related to a valve that was left stuck, which caused it to lose a lot of fuel, it lost so much fuel that it ran out of fuel to be able to make the landing maneuver, something that should have happened on February 23.

If it had succeeded, it would be the first American spacecraft to land on the moon since the Apollo 17 mission in 1972. In this photo above you can see Eugene Cernan, the last man to set foot on the Moon. He is inside the lunar module and is full. dusty and exhausted.

The pilgrim ship carried a great variety of cargo, scientific instruments from NASA and Germany, works of art, stories, ashes of a deceased person and also several mini rovers, one from Carnegie Mellon University called Iris. 3:0 and the team of five Nano rovers from the Colmena de México project, all that material will no longer reach the moon, but not everything was lost. NASA and Astrobotic activated some of the NASA scientific instruments that the peregrin carried with the in order to collect as much data as possible about the environment of the moon, because although we normally talk about the vacuum of space, in reality space is not empty, it is full of particles that move in currents and create areas of greater or lesser density. depending on factors such as the solar wind, the Earth's magnetic field or the gravity exerted by the moon.

Space is an ocean with its climate, its currents and its changing characteristics, it is a place that we must know if one day we want to navigate through it safely, but this data collection could only be done for a few hours, with the passage of time. The ship's fuel was running out and another serious problem had to be solved: once the ship ran out of fuel, it could drift between the Earth and the Moon, which posed a risk to satellites, space stations and future ones. manned missions, that is why those responsible for the mission decided that the ship would disintegrate in the Earth's atmosphere, which is how on January 18 the peregrine fell into the Earth's atmosphere a little more than 500 km southwest of Fiji.
