Movie Review #48 - All the Money in the World

avatar

Being the richest and most powerful man in the world does not automatically make you a good person, much less a generous person who would be willing to do anything to keep your family safe and well established, in fact it is already common to see how those people who have the most money are those who are most reluctant to spend when the situation demands it, with all this I want to give you some context about a film that caused me a lot of impact by the coldness of one of its characters, a film where we see the reflection of the richest man in the world, a man who even having everything was never willing to work hard to save his grandson from kidnapping.

All the Money in the World is a film that takes a close look at the life of a man who for a long time was the richest and most powerful man in the world, a ruthless man in the business world and with a tremendous ability to transform dust into mountains of money. The film is really entertaining even though its plot is somewhat slow to develop as it lets us see the kidnapping and consequent search for the grandson of the richest man in the world, a man who having literally mountains of money refused at all times to pay a simple ransom that would free his grandson from a stormy moment where he was trapped by a gang of criminals totally inexperienced but very focused on getting a good slice of money out of all this conflict.

As I said, the plot of this film is slow and develops at a somewhat tedious pace, however, it stands out in many moments thanks to the good use of visual elements that highlight the best of a vintage era full of many eighties factors that give a very good twist to the plot. However, this film on a plot level is too flimsy because it presents us with all this kidnap/rescue conflict in a weak and not very precise way, we constantly see jumps of scenes where situations seem incomplete and the story feels broken. The whole process of recovering the grandson of the richest man in the world takes place in a very heavy way with attention to detail, which means that a constant rhythm is never established in the plot.

The plot develops very slowly, taking us through scenes where we see John Paul Getty III pass from the hands of inexperienced kidnappers to the hands of a more dangerous criminal gang that is determined to kill him if they don't receive the money they are asking for, an endless number of moments that become eternal for lack of details that make us understand why things are happening, not to mention the strange fact that represents that this young kidnapped basically has been saved by one of his kidnappers, in the end, the plot is full of holes that often cause us not to understand well what is happening.

However, something that if I liked was the character of the mother of John Paul Getty III, a woman devout and able to give everything for their children a woman who even being in moments of much pressure never breaks and who manages to get the strength to get a way to free his son. Those scenes where we see everything this woman had to endure so that her son had a minimal opportunity to get out alive from all this give a very good tone of drama and emotion to the plot, through that characters we could discover the true character of the richest man in the world, a man who even having his grandson kidnapped always seek to take advantage and some benefit from the situation, to the point of making rhetorical statements and humiliating the mother of the young man to ask absurd things in exchange for his help to pay the ransom.

This is a film that has a fantastic premise but unfortunately failed to establish an acceptable rhythm that would make a poorly developed plot work, a plot that seems to have stayed at the exit line. The plot is badly constructed because it doesn't manage to generate that tension and emotion that a kidnapping film should cause, and instead it was dedicated to leaving plot holes that make the film a tedious and boring product. In conclusion, this film is a total disappointment because with some work and more attention to detail it could certainly have been better.
