altough, there's no a "why 440hz? " more than "everybody uses it"
It's all arbitrary really. From what I understand people used their own local tuning, maybe using the church bell, but then things like accordions came along that had a fixed tuning. The tempered scale is not natural either. I go for what is convenient to use to play with others. For solo stuff you can use anything you like.
