Hive Gaming Community Contest - Worst games or gaming experiences | Don't trust a game cover

(Edited)

I think that all of us, absolutely all of us, have had bad experiences with video games, but we know that the good experiences and more than the bad ones. To begin with, I will go a little back... wait, not that far back, only about 20 years approximately. At that time, my parents gave me money to buy food at school, but I didn't spend it on that. Mom, if you're reading this, you're going to find out how I spent the money you gave me, hahaha.

Note: This post was structured on Hive.blog, so it looks better organized from that frontend. I recommend to view it from hive.blog

At that time, I took the money I was given to buy brakfast and used it to buy video games. Today, I miss not having eaten those tasty empanadas the school sold, but it's too late. Unfortunately, I didn't always have access to magazines to find out which games were good or bad. Sometimes the magazines were old, two months old, and it was difficult to keep up with the progress. There was also no Internet connection as we know it now, so it was not an option to watch gameplay videos.

In view of that, I would go to my good judgment when I saw the games covers (my brothers would be insulting me right now) and let myself be carried away by the cover. Yes, you're probably laughing at me because you know we shouldn't get carried away by a cover, but understand me, I was a kid and I loved playing with female characters and I fell into the trap of advertising many, many times. One of the many bad games I bought is called Gunbird 2 for Dreamcast. When I saw its cover, I said: this is the game I want (how naive I was, the meat empanadas were better).

source

When I got home, I called my brothers and we all ran out to try the game. I putt the disc in, turned on the console and it started loading. In the intro some people started to come out. I remember one of my brother saying: finally you bring something good for the house (ungrateful one, I know that many games I brought were bad, but there were others that were good). You can imagine that I was very excited and I didn't even let my brothers see the intro, I pressed start and selected new game. I selected my character and when the game started I just said: What a piece of *%/($ is this?

source

The disappointment was so big, what I had in mind was very different from seeing the characters fly as if they were ships and go shooting. Yes, GUN-BIRD lol, I cried, it was inevitable not to think about those empanadas. I didn't eat at school for days hahaha. I tried to change the game by saying it was bad, but they tested it and it was all good. After that, every game I bought there was tested first before I bought it. Then, I had to learn to love the game and it gave me hours of fun with my brother.

But my good judgment in selecting games by their cover didn't end here, soon after I was in the store watching games. I loved Xena the warrior princess and Tomb Raider, so my interest in games had to have a woman who could fight and be strong. Looking through games, I saw Maken X; it was like love at first sight. Two women fighting with a sword on the cover and the letter X in the name, this was the game I was looking for. I took it, paid for the game and then I was eager to get home to try it out.

source

This time I was with some friends, we turned on the console, placed the game and a screen came up where an extremely sexy voice was saying the name of the game. The first impression was quite good, we continued watching the intro and it got better and better. I was naming a sword. This is getting better and better. Something happened in the game, some bad guys appeared and started to kill everyone, and the main character, a young girl with a red suit (here everything was already perfect) grabbed the sword and had to escape from the place.

source

I wish at that time my expression was recorded hahaha when I can finally controlled the character, I realizedd that it is a game in first person and with a sword. Were the developers idiots or what? Everything was wrong, you didn't know if the sword was going to hit the enemies, you had to be throwing swords like crazy and move to see if you could touch them, the movements were super rigid, as if the main character was suffering from constipation. What a bad playing experience and I apologize if any of you liked this game (not really). I ended up dizzy and throwing the game against the wall. Can you imagine the child screaming with excitement when he opens his gift and it's a Nintendo 64 but when he opens the box, he takes out a Mario teddy?

source

I know that here I must tell the bad experiences, but this game ended up being exchanged for Sonic Adventure and I was happy (Thank God for having mercy on me). It turned out that one of my friends loved the game, and I lent it to him, but in return he lent me Sonic. Then he sold his console and I was left with a better game. I still remember the nightmares I had, me with a sword throwing punches and never hitting anything.

Just like those games, I spent a long youth buying bad games, for trusting my good instinct to see the covers until the Internet came along and pages like IGN and Gametrailers appeared hahaha. I must say that not all of them were bad, but we'll leave that for another contest. Not always the bad experiences happened with bad games, good games could make you have a bad experience too. One of the first 3D RPG I played was Final Fantasy VIII. I remember reading in a magazine how good this game was and the innovation it brought to the industry.

Shiva FF8 source

Indeed, I enjoyed it from the beginning to the end. I know that there are people who don't like it, but I want to tell about this game that I enjoyed a lot the summons, specially Shiva's one. A woman who breaks the ice and throws that blast of blizzard aaaaaah, that was epic moment for me. I fell in love with that guardian and since then, in every final fantasy game, I was eager to know how they made Shiva. Time passed and I acquired Final Fantasy IX, I had read that it was one of the best FF and it certainly is. An impeccable story, great battles, characters that catch you by their way of being, in short, a unique game.

When I bought this game, I needed to see Shiva. Where is Shiva? I had to use her, I had to advance in the game to know how to summon her. My older brother, was the one who advanced in the story and I was always with him seeing everything that happened. I helped him train and in some difficult battles. We found out that to summon early in the game, you need a lot of MP and since we were just starting, the MP was not enough to summon Shiva. We decided to train, it was like 20 hours of play, gaining a */&%" of experience, going around like idiots in a cave, killing some slugs called Flans.

I don't know why */"$% we didn't advance in the game and sought to train with stronger enemies. After so many hours of training, which were not made in one attempt because the priority was the tasks (and the annoyance of my other brothers for wanting to play other games), we acquired the necessary MP to summon Shiva. I was excited, thinking that Shiva would be better than FF8's Shiva. We summoned and Shiva came out, she launched her attack and at the end of the sequence I just said: Was that a booger she launched? What an ugly Shiva, so many hours of training for nothing. What the hell happened to the Squaresoft? The disappointment, we never used Shiva again, it was better to die with dignity than to use that thing to survive.

I think this is getting long so I better not keep telling about those experiences that have marked me. I could mention many more, like bugs in Tomb Raider 1 that made me lose my save game because I got stuck between the walls when I was already halfway through the game (I learned to have several saves since then) or like in more recent games like skyrim, where I ran out of memory on my PS3 because the save file came to weigh so much, that it left me no space for more, but then it was corrected with a patch.

source

Not to mention Digimon World, where all the Digimon were born with cancer and you had 24 hours to do I don't know what to make them survive. You also couldn't get excited if you came up with a Digimon that you liked, when it evolved, it could be any Digimon and it was extremely disappointing. What could have been a great game ended up being a disappointment. It seems to me that the eggs in the game were rotten.

I'm glad I can now look at gameplays before I buy a game. I still get carried away with the covers, but this time I read a little and watch videos so I don't lose money. We are the guinea pigs, we have to test the games now when they come out and report failures. If you don't believe me, buy an Assasin creed right at launch and get ready to see things as NEO sees them in Matrix.

Hey... I remember Gunbird (and I didn't like it at all, haha). About Final Fantasy, I also have some "nice" gaming memories with this franchise.

Great post, @josecarrerag.

That invocation could have been better, but the attention was on other guardians.
