Consistency: Looking Through The Lense Of Human Evolution & Existence

Our lives as humans generally functions in a steadily, slow and continuous manner, the unending need to repeat a particular process till it yields a result that is quite different is how we become doctors, philosophers, lawyers, scientists, professors or mathematicians.

This means to say that consistency isn't just a word of motivation like many would deem it to be, it's a systematic definition of repetitive courses of actions that can explain the evolutionary growth and development of humans in general. The early man continuously ate fruits before he discovered that as a result of the constant throwing away of the seeds, he learned that he could actually plant these trees on purpose and have them grow into trees.

When you look at the first paragraph, you'll see words like constant, continuous steadily all these are synonymous with consistency, in fact they're words that denotes the actions with values like patience and perseverance. Another allusion for example is Thomas Edison, who himself is a living proof of consistency... Well, not "living" literally.

In his course of inventing the light bulb, he was famously quoted "to have tried 99 times but achieved success in the 100th attempt". So when you look at the evolution of man, there's a constant show of consistency which has generally led to how we have come here. This means that sometimes we often underrate what it means to be consistent. Consistent in itself tests our resolve

It checks to see how patient we are in the face of failure and how we often need to repeat the things we have failed at in different ways in other to see if we can achieve success. Take a look at the story of Constantinople one of the strongest hold of the Roman capital in 330AD. Mehmed the Conqueror was the famous Turkish general that took Constantinople.

More than four hundred thousand lives were lost for almost two months of constantly ramming into the almost impenetrable walls of Constantinople and this shows character, Constantinople itself was a fortress, it intimidates external forces, but guess what?
Mehmed the Conqueror, turned up for 55 days doing the same thing, over and over again till the wall was breached.

I mean, Constantinople itself was impenetrable but then the key to taking the city was in it name. The word "constant" which was in the name, meant "continuous" and it was ironical that an impenetrable city gives away the key to breaching it in its name: Consistency.

Truth is, consistency is the main reason for evolution. So many attempts have been made by plague like the Black Death, Ebola and Covid-19 to threaten or end the human existence, but how is it that despite the whole death and challenges that these virus and pandemic never brings actually ends the human face?

It's the constant search for a cure, a solution that makes man beat all these odds to eventually stay alive. This means that being consistent is being hopeful; it means having that forbearance to continue even when the glimpse of success is relativity dim. These are a value that has been imbued into us as humans.

So while we might see consistency as external, something we should cultivate internally, we're actually wrong because it's already a value that's inbuilt within us. Setbacks in our lives are always there. Failure is often predestined in each and every day. It's a challenge that threatens to end us each and everyday we breathe. Life itself is a risk. The ways through which we live past all these are being consistent in looking for answers.

Scientists are the most consistent people, because they're existing each and everyday making diverse efforts in the face of reoccurring failure. Isn't this amazing? Without consistency, we wouldn't evolve as people, hell! We might not even have come this far without resilience and continuity and this is why I feel that most times we often underrate the length we go to "right" a "wrong", despite the latter being almost impossible.

To me I want to add to this that consistency goes far beyond hard work,e even if you are hard working and prudent at what you d,if you lack consistency result won't come

Like I mentioned, consistency on its own expands into its own values. All these other things, are all features or values of consistency.

A very interesting read. I have never thought of consistency in this way so you have provided me something to ponder. Thank you.

Good luck in the contest.

It is hard to imagine the taking of Constantinople. Every day for nearly 2 months, going back to be defeated only to eventually succeed. Crazy.

Exactly, it's why it feels insane but then doing the extraordinary sometimes is what differentiates you from ordinary people man.

Amazing! Giving synonymous words to consistency, I've never thought of those words before to be same as consistency.

The example of Thomas Edison is a really great one, how can someone try something for over 50 times and kept on failing and trying again til he got 99? It can only be consistency.

Being consistent not only mean to keep doing one thing but to keep being constant in getting an achievement from what you are aiming for.

Nice one sir, this is a very clear explanation of consistency.

We as humans, we can give diverse meaning to things because we think rather uniquely and differently, however we can equate consistency with continuity and doggedness. Thanks for dropping by.

True, you've written well about consistency. Anybody would understand what the word means from your perspective.

Nice read I had here 😊

What you speak to here is consistency of effort leading to eventual success, and that is the key. This, however, does not always come in the simple form of consistently doing the same thing over and over again (unless we are talking about breaching the walls of Constantinople or improving a game of tennis or golf for example). World famous golfer Gary Player put it perfectly when he said of his game: "The more I practise, the luckier I get!" And so being consistent for him was getting up each day and knocking hundreds of little white balls along a green until he perfected the shot. Or driving them down a fairway until he could land on the green and sink under par. But what we need to understand too is that by getting up each day and putting all those balls along the green, he wasn't just playing the SAME consistent shot. His neurons were firing, his golf grip adjusting slightly each time he stroked the ball. A change in angle, a change in pace, a bit of spin, constant reinvention of the shot until it is perfect. So, in a world of consistency, change is a necessary constant for success too :-)
