How Overly Or Underly Egotistic Should You Be? (POB WOTW)

One unique trait every human is born with is "sense of self importance". This has sometimes often been overstated in recent times. When we tend to see pride in people we often tend to say they're egotistic, they speak so highly of themselves, they exhalt their values and often see their perspective as superior and never lacking in flaws.

In the society where i come from, beauty gives people an egotistic aura. They're always friends with the mirror, checking out themselves and always weighing people's feedback about their suerflous looks, this brings a certain kind of confidence; perhaps overconfidence and they develop certain attitude that might suggest they're something to reckon with.

Personally I think ego is a good thing to some extent, I only believe that too much of it, is where it gets bad. For example every human being will place themselves as their topmost priorities more than any other thing. Originally ego means "I" self, in my own word, me or myself. and however we chose to equate other narratives to ourselves is where it gets interesting.

This means when we consider ourselves more important than any other thing in life. Now. let me ask, is this a bad thing? I'll definitely say no. Truth is, by default we're designed to value ourselves above any other thing, when it comes to survival, we would mostly choose ourselves because that is when the Instincts kick in.

If we now begin to equate ego to character and personality it becomes much of a dicier issue. You see around the human society, we extol the quality of selflessness, we have this believe that people should be less of themselves and more of others and rightly so. When people are egotistic, they're considered to be full of themselves, they have a sense of self worth and a pride, they wouldn't compromise to save their face in an even problematic situation and sometimes this usually beings a problem.

We have a lot of people who are probably our bosses, our supervisors, Chairmen or parents, naturally these people have a sense of self worth due to how much or the level they've gotten to in life, this means they've got ego.

But there are times they're wrong, the way they react to a certain issue is not okay, they tend to go overboard and do questionable things but then realising this and still fail to set things straight, apologise to the right people, admit they're wrong and do things right is is having a big ego which is what is actually problematic.

By default, having a normal ego allows us to rightly see our worth and not overestimate our value or relevance. Having the right ego is rightly valuing and validating ourselves, sometimes we look at ourselves and see things others wouldn't see; it takes discipline to rightly weigh ourselves correctly, not too demeaning that others wouldn't value us and too highly and mighty that Others might sense a huge aura of ego in us.

Truth is, the issue of ego is dicey. I would say sometimes having the right ego makes you maintain your principles and makes your word mean something. Sometimes in life we want to give up, but we refused because it compromise our ego, the feeling of defeat wouldn't Just let us back down and sometimes when we're struggling in life we need this ego to keep persevering.

In the other aspect of having an ego, it makes us overestimate our abilities in life, thinking we're something we're not. It makes us unreasonable. Its a double edgged sword which people haven't been able to find the perfect way to mantain minimalism for. In reality, we all need our ego but then having too much of it takes us down as well.

I really like this part. Too much ego can be a bad thing, but you have to be able to trust in yourself. Personally, I have faith in my abilities, I know what I want, I go out and get it and I stand up for myself and my believes. I am, however, not very confident socially, so although I value myself greatly, I don't come across as egotistical. I guess that helps to be seen as the sweet, shy girl, while still being able to care for myself.

Being shy is okay I guess, I think from your comment you outrightly value yourself correctly and this is reasonably okay. Truth is, we need to be able to be confident in our abilities and resilient in our resolve. Thank you for dropping by, I appreciate

In reality, we all need our ego but then having too much of it takes us down as well.

Too much of everything is a disease that's just all I can say here.
Our ego is shouldn't be neglected yes! But that shouldn't create an avenue for it to be overrated.

Is there a measure for ego? Actually, I would say if someone is able to create the right balance with their ego, nothing like that. But I doubt if that's possible for a lot of us, at least not for me. We use our ego to our convenience. And its the ego which comes as a hurdle for us to understand when the balance goes bad.

There's no measure, it's just that ego isn't a straight up bad thing, we need it, sometimes finding a balance is how you'd know it's not a straight up bad thing.

Getting the balance right in different situations is tricky. I agree with you that it is neither completely good or bad. Too little ego and one would be a pushover. Too much and they'd be a pain in the butt.

Exactly, many do not agree that ego can be weighed they feel it's just a straight up bad thing which I completely disagree. Irrespective working to get it right can be difficult as you said.

True. We need a balanced sense of selfworth and some people might call us arrogant for it. On the other side of the coin we might go overboard with our selflove and stop showing sympathy to others. Like you said a double-edged sword. It takes a lifetime to master our ego.

If the ego is properly controlled and put in the right place, it tends to bring us good things. The problem is that this is often never such an easy task to be done.
