How The Average Nigerian Is Being Financially Exploited On A Daily Basis...

Buying Data bundle is the biggest form of exploitation in Nigeria. While most network service provider are direct in their thievery, others are basically more devious in their approach and sometimes the average Nigeria who purchases things like airtime, online goods are services are regularly exploited and cheated but because this exploitations happens in the smallest of unit like one naira, two or three naira people don't even know they're being cheated on a daily basis. In a month I usefully use almost 30 gigabyte of internet data costing about 5000 Nigerian naira, most of the times it feels like I hardly even use data of up to 2000 and this is because the metric with which these services providers consumes data is maddening and it hardly reflects any value for money.

It's alleged that Nigerians hardly pay tax but this isn't totally true. Even if we don't pay taxes to the government directly, we pay tax on purchase to companies like Jumia, ShopRite, PHCN and other servicing bodies which in turn pays taxes to the government. While online service payment scheme exploits people on tariff, network service provider most times provides unsolicited and unrequested service like ring back tune, services like job offer text messages are also a huge scam that's used to strip and exploit people of their hard earned money while almost giving them nothing in return. See these network have smart means of cheating people and their numerous terms and conditions policies are another way which they use to make excuses for stealing from people.

No one actually reads terms and conditions anymore and people just blindly accept offers that seems too juicy like "buy one get one free", "recharge 100 and get 1000 naira bonus". These schemes are for people who feel like they're getting more just for buying less but then that's not totally true. These service providers understands the average Nigeria consumers likes freebies and what they do is to actually give you freebies in bulk to either browser the internet and call any network while they actually deduct what they've given you little by little for courses a stipulated amount of time. Sometimes people buy internet time on a cheap and find out that their network hardly even browses well thereafter. These are schemes used to take back from the ruse of actually giving.

Banks are the next exploitative organisation that are out there. During the covid-19 lockdown banks like access bank were largely deducting people's money for stamp charges and ATM card maintenance. In the actual sense let's make a calculation: if a bank has 0ne million customers and during the pandemic they charge each customer a rate of 500 naira on stamp charges they'll exactly be making 500 million Nigeria naira from depleted Nigerians who didn't even have money during the lockdown to feed. It's logical, the banks raise an internal gofundme probably to see yo their needs while the people who are supposed to be benefiting from the protections of these banks are basically losing their money.

From purchasing and using paid services, down to saving money in the bank or even using public ammenities, the average Nigeria is being exploited and this is going on unchecked. It's a merry-go-round of wealthy and boisterous cooperate organisation benefiting off from the ignorance of people and making their billions off them. In a more balanced economic society, consumers protection suppose to be guaranteed but nowadays these companies just want to make profit and everyday they're coming up with even more gullible scheme to exploit from people. I guess this is because servicing is somewhat still Centralised and I envisage a world where people can generate their own services free from abitrarriness and exploitativeness.

It's actually true bro, most of the time we actually spend on data more than on ourselves and banks charges are unbearable but we go survive.

Yeah it's pathetic, people's hard earned money is being exploited and it seems like something even normal.
It's been a long time, how have you been?

This is one of the reasons why HIVE and LEO needs to thrive in a country like Nigeria. While it is tough to combat the thieving forces on the outside, we can create a situation where Nigerians can offset it at least by getting rewarded for their efforts on Hive. This will also protect their money as it is not in the hands of banks. Yes there will be the charges when offloading it but at least while it is on the blockchain, it is safe.

Exactly this aspect actually shows that hive as a use case in Nigeria will prevent a lot of manipulations and thieving. Government are majorly against things that'll make people less dependent on them. Blockchain is the safest, free from theft and exploitation, I hope this will be the case in the future. I would love nothing more than to see an enormous Nigerian community form on Hive. It is the ideal mechanism to bring people together and start the process of building a financial future that is, mostly, out of the reach of the thievery that takes place there.
