Once Or Twice, Moderation Is Key

Somehow, I've been cowed into eating red meat again. This time around I know it's not okay for the kidney and the arteries, especially fatty and organ meat. But it was a good ride. For a whole month in December, I didn't eat red meat. I had some roasted chicken at some point, and I heard it was healthier, so I made sure I had lean cuts and threw away the fatty side of the meat.

Of course, continous consumption of fatty food and meat hardens the arteries over time, and this can cause a widow maker heart attack. But, people who are very healthy do not really bother and this is because the illusion of perfect health might make them live in the denial that their health can ever decline as a result of consuming some type of food.

For over 15 years, I've been a terrible eater. Although I gained weight and looked very good, I totally ignored the fact that I needed to eat healthier for the sake of my health. At one time I checked my blood sugar in November and it was borderline high. But after two months of fruit diet, and staying away from refined sugar, I'm definitely certain that it would have reduced.

So, I know I'm eating red meat again, but I'm doing it in moderation. I've cut out random consumption of meat and only do it with food, you know, having some form of protein with rice. I've also started adding fish, because of the omega-3 fatty acid (for the kidney) and I've added eggs, they're more gentle to the body than red meat, but they still come with their downside.

However, the idea is to cut animal protein from my diet over time, but for now, seeing that I'm mostly living alone (until June) I still have to keep cooking the traditional way. Cooking is a lot of work. I used to enjoy doing it, but now I'm just eating to survive, and fill the belly.

Although I still mind what I eat. Having someone over sometimes, means I get to eat some decent food, I appreciate the one person in my life right now who is making sure I'm not starving and eating to survive alone.

The Dish

In this dish, I have rice and stew, meat, fish and egg, and some vegetables on a separate plate. The vegetable was just another added spice. I decided to have my carb with vegetables this time. It's not like I'll continue this, but whenever it's available, then I'll have it this way. I could have added some carrots too, but I haven't restocked and it's quite expensive too. I decided to take some pictures out of boredom.

The stew was made from natural tomatoes, rather than sachet and processed ones. I stopped eating processed tomatoes after my diagnosis in November. I also made sure the meat wasn't fried, I'm trying to stop eating fried food, and even if I would, once or twice in a month. The rare occasion is not always bad, however, moderation is key.

Stews and soup made fresh veg/meat bought at the market, washed thoroughly before cooking, balance is everything in healthy living. Meal looks good!

!BEER 1 x Guinness a week is apparently very healthy.

Yeah, I think I read about the Guiness online somewhere and apparently, they said red wine too, once in a while.
Thank you, yes the stew and vegetable is tasty.

Trick of eating healthy at a cheaper rate is local markets to select fresh.

We have local markets here too, but it's still not as cheap

Prices have gone crazy here as well, still shop local or directly from market where possible.

@nkemakonam89 says - Hey Joe, moderation is always important in whatever we are consuming and in your case, a health diagnosis. It's not really easy to keep to the rules of dieting. It's a whole lot of stress plus it cost more. My mum has been facing a health challenge that requires dieting and I tell you that I passed through stress cooking her meals separately when she visited Lagos.
The fresh tomatoes stew and veggies are sure a healthy meal. I hope you can be eating this more often 🤗

@nkemakonam89 thank you. Well it costs to follow a diet, sometimes it's better to be completely healthy and eat anything that comes your way without fear of consequences. Along the way, I'll eat some rubbish, especially when I get too tired, exhausted or low in cash to eat right. It's can be exhausting

This is something Im always saying, we never know for real how we are on the inside, going to the Dr and doing regular exams gives you an idea, just two days ago a futbol player that was part of the national team die from a heart attack after a friendly game, I try to eat healthy too but sometimes its hard due to prices of everything going up

It's expensive to eat healthy, this is true but sometimes it's the only saving grace. I have always know I a chronic condition, but I thought I was doing okay. Losing my brother made me start going to the hospital and it turns out there was a lot I needed to worry about..

Eating healthy can cost quite a bit nowadays, but I think it's so much worth it when we factor in the alternative of not eating healthy and what that can do to our body. I try to be moderate with most foods, as it is a good way to develop a balanced diet.

In Africa, I think eating healthy is expensive, especially with the stress that came with preparing it. But, it's probably better to just manage to do it.

Moderation is truly the key to life. It is nice reading this. Makes me smile knowing you are eating well and taking good care of yourself, which is very necessary.

Truly, people who don't have any sort of health issues don't know about what the over consumption of red meat does them. Maybe they do... lol, and they are just using the people sort of line.

It's also nice that someone is coming over to be with you. I know you'd share it, so I am patiently waiting for that moment

Thank you. Well, I'll give anything to eat anything and not feel any further complications in my body. However I don't have that and it seems I now have to be careful. It's expensive. You're right, moderation is key. So once in a while I eat those bad stuffs, maybe once in a month or more than that

I can't cook all the time. It's always stressful for me and these days I'm not as strong as I used to be. So there are some days I also get to eat poorly too. You're right, cooking is a job on its own

I never been a big fan of red meat and actually I try to eat less, I was vegetarian some years ago but I felt so bad because I didn't follow a properly diet and put poor proteins that game me a b12 vitamin loss. By the way your dish looks perfect balanced I actually cook quite healthy dishes the problems for me are the snacks I often eat junk food snack that ruin surely my health

I was always a red meat advocate especially when I noticed I could afford it. This was a long time ago. But I have a preexisting health condition so the best for me would be to eat less of red meat.
B12 is very important, I think there are vegan diet that helps to provide the nutrients that animal protein might not, I'm not really certain.
Junk food can be bad, did you manage to stop?

It's good to know that you are intentional about eating healthy, the fish and vegetables you added to this meal will help boost your blood level.

It's also good to moderate eating red meat, chicken is more preferable and a roasted one is better than fried.

I know it's not easy to eat healthy but we have to in order to be healthy and keep off from illness.

The food looks so delicious packed with proteins and vegetables. I also love having rice with green vegetables.

Thanks for sharing your meal with us.

Moderation is definitely key. I don't really know what it would be like to live without meat. I am just so used to eating it but if you want to be healthy, I do agree that it is best to slowly get off of it. I think there are also cuts of meat that are slightly healthier with less fat, but I am not an expert on that.
