Splinterlands: How To Beat The "Modern" Competition.
My title is ambiguous and this is because I proposed it to have another meaning other than the one you might be thinking.
So firstly, splinterlands has gotten tougher to play, especially in the modern format of the game, this is a new or a "modern" problem that a lot of players with small investments or a small deck will need to contend with, especially if they wish to continue playing the game.
There's always a standard to meet or a metric when playing Splinterlands. In the past 12 months, players have had to contend with many changes coming to the game: the soulbound cards changes, the readjustment of the ECR, and now SPS requirement for maximum rewards.
Resources: A Reason To Adjust
These changes are what money can mostly solve, the adjustment is better when the resources to switch or take a different action to continue enjoying the reward/returns from playing.
The bear market has made some of these changes difficult to tackle, for individual players, but Splinterlands INC, they have to sustain the game and make it better for investors to retain their money and even bring more into the ecosystem.
So, the adjusting and catch-up will have to be done by others. One of the most recent significant changes was removing the bots from modern and sweetening the incentive to play there.
No kidding, the SPS reward for playing in modern is unbelievable
I played a couple of games in wild and discovered that the difference in reward is massive. However, I played for one month in the modern format, and after playing about 842 games in 30 days, I discovered that I won about 312 games, while losing about 528 games in the process.
This is anti-progress. So in over one month, I've gotten some decent SPS for playing in modern, but I've been permanently relegated from playing in the gold leagues. Gold League means gold chests. I opened my silver chests for last season and they were really poor.
SPS Compromise?
This is why I decided to make a compromise. While I want a good SPS reward, my main priority is having better chest output.
The reason is that gold chests gives you better opportunities of flipping more summoners, more chances of getting CL packs, and even more chances at epic cards rather than potions.
I aim to increase the level of my summoners and boost my soulbond deck to levels 7 and 8 while having level 5 and 6 soulbound summoners in the process. This is why I chose to go back to the WILD FORMAT. I decided to play in the two formats, but having a limited ECR and no money to invest, I decided to stick with playing strictly in wild.
An Unimaginable Streak Of Losses
Although on the first day of the season, I had a full ECR at 50 and decided to just play in modern before fully moving to wild, I incurred a 17-game losing streak, while winning only 5 games.
I was angry for wasting all that ECR. I was in bronze 3 already in wild after 4 to 5 months of not playing there. However, after 3 days of playing in wild, I've solidified my position in Silver 2 and looking to get into Silver one.
The aim is to finish in Gold 2 and thankful I have about nine days to go. I haven't looked at the SPS reward per game, but moving from league to league is what I aim to always do.
My Plan
If I get more SPS for winning in modern, but keep going down the leagues, then I'll eventually end up competing in bronze, losing ECR, and failing on my goal of getting gold chests again which will result in helping me build the dream soulbound deck. It's a tough compromise, but I don't feel it's worth it to continue in modern.
Although I'm talking from the perspective of a small deck owner, it's the better way to maximize my ECR, minimize my losses, and still go further in the leagues to own gold chests. Of course, I'll incur losses, but minimally.
Losing is part of the game, and I hope to record my progress after the end of the season. My deck was initially optimized for playing in wild before I started playing in modern, so I had no problem going back there. If you're encountering such a situation, then going back to the wild format is the best decision to make.

You analyzed the situation and took steps on a working strategy for you, that is what the game has pushed us to do, especially with the recent change.
I am also after the gold chest but my strategy is to also go for the SPS in Modern, at the end of the season I will see how I perform.
We have to keep adapting and strategizing to stay competitive and rewarding even though the reward part is luck-based.
This was my strategy at first, but I had ECR limitations, so it was very difficult for me to get the SPS in modern while getting to gold in wild. Let's see how you'll do when the season eventually ends. For me, playing more in modern just seem like a waste of ECR, and ECR is precious nowadays.
If I may ask, is the game that difficult for you to win over 300 games out of 800+ games? Do you need to be very strategic before you play this game or what?
It's become difficult to play in the modern format of the game, because of the crazy competition. Hence the reason for that crazy loss..

Earning more sps tempted me to join the game and also show the commitment to help the real players and that is what I was not getting so I had to leave. Good to see the latest improvement I might join back anytime soon.

Splinterlands has been tough lately. I am not sure if wild will be easier and I have been used to modern for a long while. I think I'll stick to modern and most of my cards are leveled up for Silver at least.

Your decision to play in wild format is better because since they stop bot from modern, It is either you are paired with players with better cards or players using advanced skillful bot which is battle helper, you have no chance against those two
I didn't know there were advanced skillful bots in the game. Most of the people I've been matched against had better deck, better cards and sometimes the tactics they use is not something I can even imagine. I'm glad to be out of there for now.
Also I in the previous season and in this current one am having a decrease in win rate in modern format but I keep playing in Modern because playing with real players gives me much more fun.
I also think that when the proposal to block battle helpers in the modern format is implemented the win rate will increase and also by a lot ;)

My win rate has become worse in modern, I don't know if it's because of the battle helpers or because of the new competition for the juicy SPS in modern. It's a good reason for you to continue playing in modern, I don't think I can battle the competition in modern
