Twitter: The Prospective Economic Repercussions Of Social Media Shutdown In Nigerian?

True power freedom is not really when people speak, it is when they express the content of their thoughts. While threats can oftentimes be expressed when spoken, it is what actually give away an intended actions. The thought is limitless in it's assertions. That is why when people are being sentenced, given a punishment for a particular offence is most jurisdiction it's always the intention that matters a lot.

While threats of the mouth can be dangerous, people are often arrested or charged because of their initial intent even if they've not expressed it through their actions. The president of Nigeria threatened violence and war in his tweet somedays ago and as a result of this, his tweets were deleted due to violation.

The Irony..

The irony of this issue is that the Nigerian government themselves has been anti-free speech for a long time, but then when twitter deleted the president's speech, the Presidency deemed it to be anti-free speech, forming the perception that twitter as a social media is always giving people the power as an incitation or incentive to stand against the sovereignty of the government.

The presidency of Nigeria once claimed that twitter allowed people to exchange bitcoin, transfer it through wallets without a traceble means and hence it was used to fund a malicious attack against the government. This was a ludicrous twist of the tale of what happened when the Nigerian government massacred her citizens for protesting against police brutality.

These citizens were killed for protesting against a bad government, an economically inept state that's failed both politically and economically. This is what makes it surprising that the government would call twitter anti-free speech and says it incites her citizens against its rulership, while they themselves have been trying to silence people from expressing their pain against a bad government, isn't this so ironical?

Currently they have given the order to ban twitter from the Nigerian airspace and the way it's going they might ban Facebook, or Instagram and other social medias as well. It's evident they don't want external forces to even understand the anarchial rulership they're practising in disguise of democracy.

Economically...

Bitcoin trading was banned, now twitter is being banned, how doesn't this close doors to external investors in a country that is hostile against foreigners? The repercussions here are numerous, first of all. A lot of Influencers earns their living from twitter. Twitter has no borders like Facebook and allows people reach a massive audience especially by the strength of retweets, these means that these influencers can help promote the businesses of small entepreneurs, small establishment and all.

It's a win-win. People make money by helping others make money and hence commerce is an everyday activity that the government has actually considered before making this decision. Crypto trading had this effect too, and I wonder how traditional banks and media houses will make their money especially if social medias are banned, this would mean the government are shutting down the economy just to protect their heinous rule.

Social Media Is Toothless In The First Place

This brings me to the fact that most Nigerians only have twitter as a means to fight the government, public protests, ombudsman and so many other means might mean death or threat of jail to citizens. People use twitter to inform the world about what's currently going on the country.

This is toothless, people's intent is to overthrow the government but they're only talking on twitter and a mere physical mobilisation will make the government unless the government and do into blood mode, so people aren't punished for actually making attempts for overthrowing the government, they're being punished for having the intents and this is why I believe talking on twitter has hardly ever made any impact since external forces cannot infiltrate a sovereign nation without her permission.

In Retrospect, I believe only an ACT, maybe from the UN or maybe something in the confederal ACTs Can change what is currently happening in Nigeria. The government are enjoying the fact that they're a sovereign independent nation hence torturing and punishing her citizens is no one's business. I feel that people will find a workaround to use twitter, but the fear is that wouldn't it get to a stage where they might contemplate shutting down the ibttjstt entirely?

I’ve met a few Nigerians who moved here and let me tell you South African is in shambles itself but they still see it as a better option many say they would never go back

I am sure many of the skilled Nigerians have moved on too to the developed world

I think Nigeria is jusy further along the path with South Africa not too far behind! They have both been the two potential African power houses and look how we fucked it up

Point is we need an exit strategy either exit the country or exit the money it’s the only option I can see! I exit my countries Rands everyday most people around me don’t care or don’t see it

But for me it’s clear as day, it’s why I’m so passionate about Bitcoin it’s the only thing I see that can protect me and I can use to protest against this bullshit

The crises in Nigeria is far beyond reckoning and that's why Nigerians will still prefer South Africa to Nigeria any day, anytime. It's the case for the lesser evil. I definitely believe that Nigeria should be the most failed state in the world and in a place where human rights and rule of law can't be guaranteed, rest assured anywhere else is better. As for me, I'm planning on leaving, but then I'll need a lot of money as unemployment here is something else infact. It's a thing of emergency, the country is imploding really badly.

I understand that feeling of wanting to leave, it's just like without resources wherever you go you have to start from zero and it's not a guarantee it will be a warm welcome there. You give up a lot of your support structures by leaving too, I've been wrestling with these thoughts for a while

Well it's the truth, you need to start from ground zero especially if you're moving to somewhere different. But then I think I'll make solid plans for when I'll eventually leave because I'm sure I'm going to be leaving.

This is quite ridiculous Nigeria exhibiting its foolishness, something it has always done again and again.
Banning Twitter is to Nigeria's lost and not Twitter's lost maybe someone need to explain to that dumb president.

Exactly, I feel he's totally inept and doesn't really understand a lot of things persay, in a bid to silence people he thinks he's actually doing any wrong to twitter here. It's really crazy if you ask me.

Some persons have kicked up their Contingency plan to leave the country and the government are busy saying that we're denouncing our citizenship when they are so concern on destroying the youths not to over thrown their bad governance.
As a Nigerian I see no reason of putting a ban on the trade of crypto in the country, because at some point it really lifted some youth from some crimes.

It's clear, the currently leaders are not after economic growth and development, they Just want to exercise their power and of course rule without having to report to anyone. There's no checks and balances in what we're practising in Nigeria.

Obviously we know that Twitter and the government both are bad actors. In this case I guess whatever Twitter wanted to promote didn't include Nigeria and I don't think it is a surprise for anyone at this point.

Honestly I don't think the UN can really fix anything nor are they really interested in doing so. I guess maybe if they want something that is plentiful they may act to seize control but I don't really seeing anything improving.

They won't be meddling in the affairs of a sovereign nation, the UN. this is why I think nothing will change. The government in Nigeria are gradually returning us to the stone age.
