"Dressing heavy" is one of those things I hardly do and this is because of a personal dress sense I've come to create and adopt. To me, dressing heavy means, wearing different layers of cloth and being emphatic about it. Nigeria is a tropical country, the weather here most makes for loose clothing. However, it's difficult to adopt this dress sense at all times, especially because people have to wear different clothes for different occasions. 9 to 5ers are mostly known for three or two-piece suits, especially in corporate organizations. This is the adopted Western way of looking or appearing formal.

The Nigerian way of looking formal is wearing native attire. These attires are in different formats, cultures, and styles. In fact, the Nigerian way of looking ostentatious is mostly through native or traditional attire. Wealthy people often dress this way to feel grand. This goes to show that dressing for a lot of people is to communicate intent, occasion, and desire. For someone like me, comfort is the only reason why I have a queer sense of dressing. Being a lanky person, I prefer clothes that are medium in size, not too small to reveal the lankiness, and not too big to create an improper outcome.

Another reason is to establish a healthy status. All my life, I've always tried to maintain simple weather conditions; not too cold and not too cold, so as not to trigger temperature crises that might lead to fever. I've worked in formal organizations in the past and dressing formally in hot weather conditions caused a lot of skin irritation and burnout for me. However, I like to dress simply, inasmuch as it's important to communicate "responsibility" with one's dress sense, I mostly prefer to establish satisfaction and comfort as the primary aim of dressing. Interestingly I do so too because I like to pay attention to cost.

Clothing is expensive, in fact, it's a thriving industry in any country. I pay attention to cost because obviously, money is difficult to come by. Some people mostly dress to communicate how financially buoyant they are. This isn't me. I rather prefer value for money which isn't essentially expensive at all times. The notion is that one has to spend big to establish a dress finesse. This isn't always true. I once met a lady here who said she cannot wear a shoe of 5000k (naira). I already knew she wasn't someone I wish to know, and this was because of the sole concentration on dressing expensive to impress.

The best thing is to try to achieve value for a lesser cost while still maintaining some level of finesse. I was a "dress to kill* type when I was a teenager: my choice of cologne, mufflers, shoes, and sandals, but that was because I was young and mostly concentrated my income on looking good. As an adult, this has been different. However, with the growing rate of inflation in Nigeria, it's difficult not to spend a heavy chunk of one's money trying to maintain simplicity and finesse. Nevertheless, we cannot stop ourselves, unless we have a strong system of choice and check where we understand our limits and stick closely to them.

Of a truth, we're taken away by fascination when see expensive dressing. There are people who wear expensive stuff and come out intentionally dashing. There are people who do the same and still come out looking classless, without a picturesque outlook, no sense of direction, and no synergy. This mostly proves that money is quintessential when it comes to dressing, but being creative and unique is even more important. For me, the freedom of expression, the health impact, cost as well as maintaining my own unique way of looking okay, is the most important reason why I dress.

Lovely piece Chief.

Couple of times the police would ask me if I was a student or the owner of the car both because of my stature and dressing. My ID card always comes in handy

The police in Nigeria is something else. To have a car and be a young man is really terrible in this country. I'm glad you've found a way to always show your ID to them

Despite clothing being very priceless we need to do well to have a descent dressing code for every gathering, purpose and function. I think that is the most important thing. I think there is every dressing attire for certain functions which we can't overlook. Also, we need to check that for the clothing we are wearing match with the footwear, belt and all items you have used to dress.

Well that's the point of dressing from a different perspective. Clothings brings a cultural responsibility sometimes. People dress for different occasions. All in all, my point just like you is that prove that people can be simple and classy at the same time.

I great piece on dressing. I do polos and trousers often to work. My office looks decent and I would normally be expected to put on trouser and Tshirts and tie but I dont. I want to feel free and comfortable and not tied up. On occasion, I dress the western corporate style. But Polo and T-shirts accounts for 80% of my dressing.

People dress to impress or to make a financial statement. Its up to them. The most important reasons to dress should be to look decent for the occasion and not to display our bank account balance.

Yeah, I mostly see your dress style haha you mostly wear jeans and polo and probably suit when you're going for a wedding. I think because your business isn't too rigid, you can be flexible with your dressing. I think it's even better that way.

I don't think traditional Nigerian clothing involves wearing jeans and sneakers :)

Some people mostly dress to communicate how financially buoyant they are

This made me remember a newbie or so here on Hive who kept adding price tags of her outfits at the end of her posts 🤣 It was so funny and was like, "was her intention to come and show off here or learn as we do?"

There are different reasons for each individual as to why they dress. Inasmuch as dressing is an important factor to our personality, it must communicate who we are and able to help us express ourselves in the best way and not to bring down other people. For many people I have seen, their main aim of dressing is to oppress and show off their worth. All of these aren't my concern nor do they bother me. As long as I dress responsibly and also feel comfortable in myself, I am good to go. One main reason I dress is to portray who I am.

Hahaha I guess the newbie in question showed their intentions there or they were just probably naive that people don't pay attention to things like that. I feel that in Nigeria we mostly do this a lot. The reason is we just like to show our worth. For someone like me, I just want to be unique in my style to be very honest.

People have been used to such lifestyle of oppressing others with their networth and what they could afford.

This post is about totally different topic, normally you posts are related to finance and cryptocurrency, I personally don't like to give to much focus or importance to dressing but for some people it's a matter of life and death, I think we should wear what we like or what is suitable for for us according to weather or over culture or tradition

Well, I write about many things, finance seems to be the thing I mostly prefer, but I write every type of post. People have different reasons why they wear clothes, for me, I just want to be comfortable with myself and also look decent. That's why I talked about cloth and clothing in this post.

I also used to dress to impress back in my younger days. Nowadays, it's completely different. I settle for simple minimalistic clothes that comfortably express who I am or what I want to become. Apart from formal occasion, I try to keep things as simple as possible.
Great picture shots :)

I guess when we were younger, all we wanted to do was to impress. I think we become inclined to change when we become take on more responsibilities as well as get older and have different priorities in life as well. Thank you, I like taking stylish pictures.

Indeed. Most of my friends in my younger days who were rockstars when it comes to dressing are now dressing like the average John with a bit of style. A few are still going hard on the rockstar style.
You're most welcome, you've a knack for it.

Then I don't usually give focus to dressing but now I am begin to pay close attention to dressing because truly you will be addressed the way you are dressed

Well, there's a good saying there. However the focus is dressing and cost and doing one's best to seem unique.

For someone like me, comfort is the only reason why I have a queer sense of dressing

This is a nice mentality when it comes to dressing. Talk of my gender, most of us dress uncomfortably just to impress....I was like that sometimes during my singlehood stage 😂😂...but not anymore...now I know better.. nothing beats our comfort in dressing

Also some people spend plenty money on weras without applying creativity while dressing.

but being creative and unique is even more important

You even mentioned it here. If one apply creativity, you can buy more affordable cloth and appear more unique than someone who spent hugely.

Just like you, the inflation is already making me to prioritize my needs and follow it strictly...even in terms of dressing

I love Ur fashion sense
Unique and exceptional 👌

I completely relate here. I was having a conversation with a friend of mine from work and her impression was that I don’t or wouldn’t wear thrifted clothes. It was funny to me because that meant that she must’ve thought I’m some rich person who only buys expensive stuff.

In reality, most of the casual clothes I wear are thrifted, aside the native attires which are made custom by my tailor. I just take my time to select nice things that I feel are worth the money I’m paying for. And it’s not because I’m cheap or anything, it’s because I shop in boutiques as well too, so I know what’s good for my money when I see it.

Boss how do you manage to stay fine boy like this? Cut soap for me na:)

I also know a lot of people who think that dressing has to do with being expensive or flamboyant. I also wear a lot of thrift clothes. Back in the days when I was hustling some menial jobs, I always looked for ways to buy the cheapest clothes and still managed to look good. As for that friend of yours I think they need some lessons in personal finance.

I don't think people should spend a lot of money on clothes especially when they are struggling or haven't gotten to where they need to be financially. Maybe that person had the impression that you had a lot of money.

Boss how do you manage to stay fine boy like this? Cut soap for me na:)

This is what an iPhone does to you. You have experienced it yourself hahaha.

Naturally, people would have loved to wear what they are comfortable in. The real issue is that there are a lot of people out there who would assess your financial status by what you're wearing. To those people, simplicity in dressing amounts to struggling financially.

On that note, if you have been disrespected several times because of what you're wearing, you may be forced to reconsider your dress sense. That's what pushed a lot of people to begin to dress to kill.

Funny enough, people who are really rich don't dress to kill. You won't see the likes of Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, and Warren Buffet dress heavy. I'm not even sure you'll see jewelries on them. They always follow the simple, minimalistic dress sense. And they don't have issues because people already know how rich they are. Nobody bothers to assess the dressing of these people because we all know their financial worth already.

I don't remember the last time I bought clothes... Lol

In short anything that would make me buy new clothes should wait first

Now, my girlfriend is testing me with her Asoebi... When she told me how much and what she wanted as wedding gift, I wanted to disappear because the amount she coughed might send me packing to my village 🤣

Omo, I haven't bought any clothes since 2021, nowadays I mostly recycle. Asoebi to me is just one of those things that I cannot afford, but she's your friend and you wouldn't want to disappoint her I guess. Dressing to me is a luxury these days, and I can't even spend on any wedding attire

As a sales person dressing real nice is part of our job especially when you are selling to the high networth individuals. They will first buy your brand before they buy your product. I don't look for expensive wears but i go for something that fits me perfectly and make me look good then buy a good shoe to compliment it.
My colleague if you see his suits you will think that they are worth maybe 80k each but no, dude knows how to get UK thrifts as low as 20k.

Haha I know what it feels like to work in Sales. The dressing is part of the job, that is why I said dressing is part of the package of people who work 9 to 5. I think when we dress for a business appointment, it's totally worth it. I think your colleague is a smart person. We can buy cheaper things while convincing people that they're way expensive.

This distills the entire post neatly:

For me, the freedom of expression, the health impact, cost as well as maintaining my own unique way of looking okay, is the most important reason why I dress.

I've always been a t-shirt and jeans kind of guy, and hated having to iron my clothes whenever we stayed at my grandmothers house. She'd take my underwear and pajamas and sew my name in the waistbands. You should have seen the guys in Navy bootcamp when they popped open my luggage and saw that. :)

I like the third photo where the camera really cuts you out from that nicely-blurred house in the background. I love what phone cameras can do today.

This is the type of Guy I am too. Although I've had to dress uncomfortably either because of a project, a presentation or a job, and sometimes ironing clothes take a lot, but I just manage to do it in many situations.

Portrait shots on iPhones are unbelievable. The digital enhancement and the clarity is almost unreal. Having a good photo camera makes it easy for you to explore so many possibilities

Just what I was talking about in my post yesterday. Clothing is expensive, but Nigerians spend so much on new attires that we import from other countries. I love to dress simple and light. A light shirt and jean always does the magic for me, when it’s super hot, I opt for a loose gown.
