I really like to play microfiction based on some historical figure, in the tone used by Jorge Luis Borges, among others, and theoretically supported by Gérard Genette in his extraordinary book Palimpsests. La literatura en segundo grado. So, trying not to stray so far from the date of birth (May 21, 1471) of one of the greatest universal artists, located between the Middle Ages and the European Renaissance, Albert Dürer, I decided to write this microfiction, in the form of a letter, and share it as a minor creative text with you.

My respects, Master.

With all humility I will try to answer some of the questions that you formulate in your brief and very kind epistle, with which you exalt me.

You ask about my beginnings in the art of engraving, and the first thing I must say, in fair gratitude, is to recognize the influence of my father, not only a draftsman but also a goldsmith. Perhaps by his example and teachings, I was introduced to the art of copper engraving, and, of course, woodcut and other techniques that I used in the continuation of this legacy that comes from antiquity, but that in our lands has been settled for centuries. I dedicated myself to it with the patience it requires, but also enjoying the pleasure it gives me. To him I owe, by the grace of God, much of my livelihood, and that fame, which I have not sought.

My series of engravings of the Apocalypse, which I have liked so much, although I have also received certain reproaches for it, was the product of some dreams, almost nightmares, that incubated in me after rereading the book of St. John in the New Testament, in some sleepless nights. I could say that, far from any desire for equivalence, they were also presented to me as revelations, which I was able to record materially. We know that much of art is inspiration, but much of it is work. You know this better than I do.

"The Melancholy", praised by you in your obituary, is perhaps the engraving I love most. Although I belong to that which Vasari has baptized as "renaissance", I feel that much of the vision and tastes of the former survive in me: the dark, luminous and spiritual at the same time, the uncertainty of mystery, the gloom that does not leave us. There is something in it that could be called "ideal beauty".

I remain yours,

Saludos, @nenio.
