A 170 años del nacimiento de quien fuera, sin duda, uno de los modificadores centrales de nuestra visión de la vida psíquica; es decir, Sigmund Freud, decidí escribir algo, con el carácter de ficción, pues no podría ser de otro modo.

Soy Segismundo. ¿Le dice algo? Es el personaje de la obra de Calderón de la Barca, La vida es sueño. Al ponerme ese nombre mis padres me marcaron para siempre. La dinámica de los sueños y su interpretación me selló y siguió hasta mi muerte, podría decir.

Sé que muchos desestimaron mis aportes. Estaban animados por el mejor propósito. Pero ya sabemos que estamos expuestos a las más mediocres intenciones.

Estoy consciente de que pude haber incurrido en errores, sobre todo cuando casi establecí la sexualidad como única base de nuestra psique. Ya saben ustedes que no es así, mas tiene un porcentaje importante en nuestra vida.

Quizás algo de la sexualidad infantil o posterior que viví pudo incidir en esa visión. No sé; algo de ello espero confesar en mis diarios.

Más allá de mis errores y excesos, que seguramente fueron muchos, advierto y reafirmo que no puede haber una vida individual que no considere los aspectos (implícitos o explícitos) de su trayectoria: de sus represiones o inhibiciones, de aquello olvidado que debemos volver a ver, de lo aparentemente deleznable o trivial…

Pero solamente cada quien debe hacerlo, sometiéndose a la averiguación personal, lo más transparente posible.

_{One hundred and seventy years after the birth of the man who was—without a doubt—one of the central figures in reshaping our understanding of psychic life—namely, Sigmund Freud—I decided to write something in the vein of fiction, for it could be no other way.}

I am Segismundo. Does that name mean anything to you? It is the name of the character in Calderón de la Barca’s play, Life Is a Dream (La vida es sueño). By giving me that name, my parents marked me forever. The dynamics of dreams and their interpretation branded me—and, one might say, followed me right up to my death.

I know that many dismissed my contributions. They were driven by the best of intentions. Yet, as we now know, we are also exposed to the most mediocre of motives.

I am aware that I may have erred—particularly when I came close to positing sexuality as the sole foundation of our psyche. You know, of course, that this is not the case; nevertheless, it plays a significant role in our lives.

Perhaps certain aspects of my own sexual development—whether in childhood or later life—may have influenced that perspective. I do not know; I hope to confess something of this in my diaries.

Beyond my errors and excesses—of which there were surely many—I assert and reaffirm that no individual life can be truly understood without taking into account the various aspects (whether implicit or explicit) of its trajectory: its repressions and inhibitions, those forgotten things we must revisit, and those elements that appear, on the surface, to be trivial or contemptible...

Yet this is a task that each individual must undertake for themselves—submitting to a process of personal inquiry that is as transparent as possible.
