THE IMPORTANCE OF CHRISTMAS IN MY CHILDHOOD AND THE END OF MY CHRISTMAS WITH SANTA CLAUS

In my childhood, I learned that Santa Claus leaves gifts for good children and coal for bad children. As December approached, my parents I am asked to write a letter asked for a gift for him.

Christmas in my youth meant a time of family reunions, parties, lots of food, happiness and best of all, gifts. It was the happiest time of year in my life.

I remember it as if it were yesterday, I was 6 years old and I asked for a Power Rangers doll, but it had to be the red one. Christmas Day arrived, I woke up early and there was a present under the tree, I opened the present and there was my red power ranger, wow, I was very happy. It was a dream come true, I liked this gift so much that I kept it until I was about 16 years old, made a frame with him. “It’s a shame I no longer have him, nor any photos of him, I ended up donating all my childhood toys when I got married.”

At 7 years old, to meet Santa Claus, I told my parents I wasn't going to sleep, I wanted to meet the good old man when he arrived with the gift. I spent most of the year thinking about this period, because I knew I was going to get a mini game. I slept without even realizing it, when I woke up, I was in bed. I ran into the living room and there was my gift: my mini game. “There was no greater happiness in a child's life” A funny thing happened, he didn't have batteries, I kept saying: “I should have asked with batteries”.

When I was 8 years old, some people told me that there was no such thing as Santa Claus, that it was my parents who bought it, but I didn't believe it. I was a good child all year and my request was to go to the zoo, I didn't know what it would be like, but it was something I wanted, among all my friends at school, I was the only one who never visited a zoo. "I really liked animals during this period, it would be a dream come true"

“I come from a humble family, in my childhood, traveling and receiving toys at any time of the year was a luxury that didn't exist” I believe that this is the main factor that Christmas in my youth was magical, an opportunity to receive or possess something that was not within my reach on a daily basis.

Even so, this was my saddest Christmas, as I received some toys in the shape of animals. I cried a lot, asked for a trip to the zoo and got just that. I was disbelieved about Christmas and my parents talked to me and explained what the real gift of Christmas was. It took me a while to accept this, in addition to the sadness, there is the feeling of frustration and deceit, but being a child, this disappears quickly.

Childhood marks our lives, after that occasion, I started to understand Christmas in a different way, “I understood what Christmas spirit means”, but I never stopped asking my parents for my gift. As I said, this Christmas marked me, I reached adulthood and had never visited a zoo. At the first opportunity, after having my job and my own income, I took a trip to the city of João Pessoa and visited the famous Bica, the city's zoo, I fulfilled the request made when I was 8 years old, but carried out 14 years later.

Today, my Christmas gatherings take place with the presence of family and friends. We make these moments a celebration of the closing of one cycle and the beginning of another.
