How I ensure a healthy mental well-being
So many things are happening in the world today. Attention is basically sidelined to our body fitness. We hear from doctors every now and then that we need to eat plenty fruits and vegetables and regularly check our blood pressure and sugar level too.
Well, it is a good thing that people are becoming more aware of their physical bodies and trying their best to ensure that they keep their bodies in good shape. These days we find out that a lot of people are now fitness coaches either by profession or by self acclamation. But the good thing is that it is now rampant.
However, little attention is shown on our mental health. There is a misconception about mental health. To the lame man, when he hears about mental health, he thinks is it madness. I have been privileged to talk to some secondary students about their mental well being.
It will interest you to know that a lot of persons are struggling with their mental health thus why in these days, a lot of persons are walking about with depression. That's because they find it hard to manage their mental health.
I love to listen to news every day. I always want to be abreast with the happenings around the world and most especially my country. Sometime last year, it was as if that particular month was dedicated to kidnapping, bombing and killing. There was no single day that passed that we didn't hear stories of bombing and killings. If it wasn't herdsmen, it was train kidnap in kaduna or bokoharam bomb blasting.
I let those news take a better part of me. The one that broke the Carmel's back for me was when the late Deborah was burnt alive. That was the most brutal and unfair thing to do. I cried that day so much that I fell sick. That incident alone summed up everything that I was hearing that moment.
It took the better part of me and I fell into depression. I lived in fear so much that every little sound I hear, sounded like a bomb blast. At night was worse for me. It felt like kidnappers would come and carry me and my family. I would stay awake all night looking through the window and observing any strange movement. Yes it was so bad.
I am glad my husband was around me that period. He didn't make an issue out of my attitude then. First thing he did was to hide our radio which was always on. He would constantly send me videos of comedy skits on WhatsApp just in case I wanted to go on social media.
My mum invited me over to the house which I did. Glad I did because soon I forgot all of the problems. Sometimes, my husband will take me out to places just to enjoy nature too. We clubbed a lot then because we needed to just do things that would make me happy and help me forget.
Well, my family tried their best. But it was up to me to heal myself.
I decided on my own to snap out and I still do that till today whenever it feels like my mental health is threatened.
I will soak myself into listening to cool and calm songs especially gospel songs. It helps to lift my spirit and give me hope too. I also try to engage in spiritual warfare which includes praying and fasting too. These strategies have been working for me till date.
