[Movie review] [Eng | Esp] The Closet | A dangerous connection between worlds
Welcome my dear entamiphobic internet travelers and thank you very much for having made a temporary stop in my post, I haven't reviewed Korean films for a while so when I got this suggestion for a horror film from the Asian country I couldn't resist because "The Closet" seemed to be loaded with different elements that were very characteristic of that nation. Without further ado, prepare to be afraid of a closet because we are about to begin.
Bienvenidos mis queridos viajeros entamifobicos del internet y muchas gracias por haber hecho una parada temporal en mi post, llevo un tiempo sin reseñar filmes coreanos por lo que cuando me salió está sugerencia de filme de terror proveniente del asiático país no pude resistirme debido a que "The Closet" parecía estar cargado de diferentes elementos muy característicos de aquella nación. Sin más que agregar prepárense para tenerle miedo a un closet pues estamos por comenzar.
The Closet was released in 2020, directed by Kim Kwang-bin, produced by Moonlight Film and Perfect Storm Film, and has a duration of 1 hour and 37 minutes. It is a horror film, the story focuses on Sang-Won and his daughter Yi-Na, who have just moved to a new house to try to overcome the death of Yi-Na's mother, the problem is that he is The new house is loaded with multiple negative energies and a strange aura to which the little girl will be especially susceptible. Once this strange vibe takes over, it will be her father's job to do everything possible to get her back.
The Closet fue estrenada en 2020, dirigida por Kim Kwang-bin, producida por Moonlight Film y Perfect Storm Film, cuenta con una duración de 1 hora y 37 minutos. Es un filme de terror, la historia se centra en Sang-Won y su hija Yi-Na, los cuales se acaban de mudar a una nueva casa para tratar de superar la muerte de la madre de Yi-Na, el problema es que está nueva casa se encuentra cargada de múltiples energías negativas y de un aura extraña a la que la pequeña será especialmente susceptible, una vez que está rara vibra se adueñe de ella será el trabajo de su padre hacer todo lo posible por recuperarla.

The soundtrack is pleasant and on more than one occasion it floods the plot with that restless and disturbing essence that is highly in keeping with the theme of the film.
La banda sonora es agradable y en más de una ocasión inunda a la trama de esa esencia intranquila e inquietante que es sumamente acordé con la temática del filme.
The world construction has a good development in which both dark colors and the use of shadows and so on predominate. On the other hand, there is the world of the dead, which is neither the best nor the worst, it is a middle point that It is neither good nor bad, it has a good explanation of how it works, but the fact that it has little interesting presence detracts from its value. I would say that the strongest point of this section lies in the various Korean symbolisms that are present in its scenery, which ends up giving that Asian essence to the entire theme of exorcisms and demonic manifestations.
La construcción de mundo tiene un buen desarrollo en los cuales predomina tanto los colores oscuros como el uso de sombras y demás, por otro lado, se encuentra el mundo de los muertos que no es el mejor ni tampoco el peor, es un punto medio que no es bueno ni malo, este posee una buena explicación sobre su funcionamiento pero el hecho de que tenga poca presencia interesante le resta valor. Diría que el punto más fuerte de este apartado radica en los diversos simbolismos coreanos que se encuentran presentes en su escenografía lo que termina dándole esa esencia asiática a todo el tema de los exorcismos y las manifestaciones demoníacas.
The plot is 50/50 between good and bad, among the good is the way of facing demons in a different way than what we are used to on this side of the globe, without the presence of priests or a Catholic Bible, it is something interesting that breaks with the standard of these films, on the negative side is its abrupt change from suspense to something with more action that feels strange and dissonant. Narratively it is not very complex to say the least, at first it tries to appeal to subtlety and go down the path of intrigue but it quickly opts for being a direct confrontation of good against evil, in addition, it relies a lot on easy scares of putting blatant jump scares with few scares that are given intelligently and well thought out, the change of direction of directly facing the demons does not help either. The duration seems very short to me for all the content that the film has, which is why it must rush explanations and events, in turn, the threat deserved to have some moments that would allow it to consolidate itself as a terrifying evil.
La trama es un 50/50 entre cosas buenas y malas, entre lo bueno está la forma de enfrentarse a los demonios de una forma distinta a lo que estamos acostumbrados de este lado del globo, sin la presencia de sacerdotes ni una biblia católica, es algo interesante que rompe con el estándar de estos filmes, de cara a lo negativo está su cambio abrupto de suspenso a algo con más acción que se siente extraño y disonante. Narrativamente no es muy compleja que digamos, en un primer momento trata de apelar a la sutileza e ir por el camino de la intriga pero rápidamente se decanta por ser un enfrentamiento directo del bien contra el mal, además, se apoya mucho en los sustos fáciles de poner jumpscare descarados siendo escasos los sustos que se dan de forma inteligente y bien pensados, el cambio de rumbo de enfrentar directamente a los demonios tampoco le ayuda. La duración me parece muy corta para todo el contenido que tiene la cinta, es debido a ello que debe apresurar explicaciones y acontecimientos, a su vez, la amenaza ameritaba tener algunos momentos que le permitiesen consolidarse como un mal aterrador.
Through the characters we try to give the message that children can be very sensitive both to their parents' thoughts about them and to the fact that they may even feel resentment towards them. It is an interesting concept but it does not really have a notable development so which ends up being an addition that is not used in the best way. There is nothing more to add in this section since broadly speaking the characters are very forgettable and feel more like drivers of the plot than as individuals, leaving them with few characteristics that are too few to define a personality.
Mediante los personajes se intenta dar el mensaje de que los niños pueden ser muy sensibles tanto a los pensamientos de los padres sobre ellos como al hecho de incluso llegar a sentir resentimiento por estos, es un concepto interesante pero no tiene realmente un desarrollo destacable por lo que termina siendo un añadido que no es aprovechado de la mejor forma. No hay nada más que añadir en este apartado puesto que a grandes rasgos los personajes son muy olvidables y se sienten más como impulsadores de la trama que como individuos, dejándolos con contadas características que son muy pocas como para definir una personalidad.
The Closet tries to make the friction between parents and children its central point and as the beginning of countless misfortunes, as an idea it is good but its execution is quite precarious, its weakest point lies in the fact that it has changes of strange rhythms that do not favor it at all and that are not in tune with the genre to which it belongs, if all the aforementioned failures are added to the above, a majority of failures over its successes become evident. It is for all the above that it deserves 2.5 stars out of 7, I would recommend it solely for the fact of seeing Asian symbolism referring to exorcisms.
The Closet trata de hacer de las fricciones entre padres e hijos su punto central y como esto puede ser el comienzo de de un sin número de desgracias, como idea está bien pero su ejecución es bastante precaria, su punto más flaco radica en el hecho de que posee cambios de ritmo extraños que no le favorecen en nada y que no se encuentran en sintonía con el género al que pertenece, si a lo anterior se le suman todas las fallas antes mencionadas se hace evidente una mayoría de fallos por sobre sus aciertos. Es por todo lo anterior que merece 2.5 estrellas de 7, la recomendaría únicamente por el hecho de ver simbología asiática referente a exorcismos.

Nunca he visto cine coreano, así que desconozco su manera de encarar las historias. El japonés es toda una experiencia, por lo que trataré de irme curtiendo en producciones de Corea.
En cuanto a la historia que nos traes, me parece interesante el hecho de ver cómo encaran este tema, aunque lamento que el filme no haya sido de tu agrado, igual valoro la reseña, pues realmente de lo malo también sacamos lo bueno, en este caso, no solo la recomendación (y advertencia antes de verla) sino también la manera los diferentes puntos de vista para poder hacer una reseña propiamente.
He visto varios filmes coreanos, mayormente de terror o de zombies y puedo decir que para ambas cosas lo suelen hacer mayormente bien, es por ello que este en particular resulta un poco decepcionante pero igual causa interés por la forma que tiene de enfrentarse al mal, siendo esto último la razón de porque la recomiendo.
