[ENG-SPN] Bonaval: a trip to memory / Bonaval: un viaje al recuerdo

In those infinite paths of paths that fork, as Borges would say philosophically, referring to the ancestral labyrinths, there are places, little or nothing known, whose ruin and loneliness do true honor to those singular verses of Verlaine, where the heart is overcome, torn, there is no doubt, of monotonous languor. They are forgotten places, to which autumn gives, commiseratingly, its unmistakable visit, bringing with it the first snows and frosts, which make the environment and its hidden artistic treasure, the adventure of the romantic, whose memory, overflowing, supposes to be found in that mysterious place where the poet François Villon located the limbo of the snows of yesteryear.

Touched, however, by that enchanting white hand that also abounds so much in the prolific fantastic literature of Bécquer, the solitary ruins of this old Cistercian monastery of Bonaval, hidden in the luxuriance of those superb mountains, which, close to Retiendas, point towards the beautiful towns of black architecture of Guadalajara, the old ruins still preserve enough details to make us think, sadly, that, after all, perhaps their fate would have been better, as in the case of the neighboring Alcarreño monastery of Obila, beyond the Atlantic, next to the great mansions of the North American magnates, type 'Citizen Kane', who, although oblivious to its intrinsic historical value, would at least have granted it the grace and honor of admiring its fascinating aesthetic value.

En esos infinitos caminos de senderos que se bifurcan, como diría filosóficamente Borges, refiriéndose a los ancestrales laberintos, hay lugares, poco o nada conocidos, cuya ruina y soledad hacen verdadero honor a aquellos singulares versos de Verlaine, donde el corazón se sobrecoge, hendido, qué duda cabe, de monótona languidez. Son lugares olvidados, a los que el otoño otorga, conmiserativo, su inconfundible visita, trayendo consigo las primeras nieves y escarchas, que hacen del entorno y su oculto tesoro artístico, la aventura del romántico, cuya memoria, desbordada, supone que se encuentra en ese misterioso lugar donde el poeta François Villon situó el limbo de las nieves de antaño.

Tocadas, no obstante, por esa hechicera mano blanca que tanto abunda, también, en la prolífica literatura fantástica de Bécquer, las solitarias ruinas de este viejo monasterio cisterciense de Bonaval, ocultas en la frondosidad de esas soberbias sierras, que, cercanas a Retiendas, señalan hacia los hermosos pueblos de arquitectura negra de Guadalajara, las viejas ruinas todavía conservan los suficientes detalles, como para hacernos pensar, con tristeza, que, después de todo, quizás su destino hubiera sido mejor, como en el caso del vecino monasterio alcarreño de Obila, más allá del Atlántico, junto a las grandes mansiones de los magnates norteamericanos, tipo ‘Ciudadano Kane’, que, aunque ajenos a su intrínseco valor histórico, al menos le hubieran concedido la gracia y pleitesía de admirar su fascinante valor estético.
