John Ruskin affirmed, in his book 'The Seven Lamps of Architecture', that the buildings of past ages belonged in part to those who had built them and in part to the future generations that would come later, who could be expected to know how to value so much extraordinary legacy.

Under this perspective and in the small evaluative part that corresponds to me, it is a real pleasure for me to recreate myself and present my vision, of an important part of that true historical, artistic, architectural and, above all, cultural heritage, which are the great cathedrals. from my country, Spain.

And I want to begin by doing so, letting myself be carried away by the charm of one of the most beautiful peninsular cathedrals, that of San Salvador de Ávila, whose origins, as incredible as it may seem, are still shrouded in the enigmatic mists of legend.

P1100015_acopia.jpg

This becomes more evident, since historians have not yet been able to agree on who was, in fact, the first teacher or Magister Muri who drew up the original design, on which the corresponding advances and modifications were subsequently made.

Some assert that it was the teacher Alvar García, who finished it, provisionally, in the year 1107, although, however, the theory that it was actually a teacher of Burgundian origin, named Fruchel, is gaining more and more strength. who carried out such great work, having arrived in Ávila in the company of Duke Raimundo de Borgoña, whose mission was to carry out the repopulation work in this area, just recently conquered.

In reality, it hardly matters, after all, whether it was Alvar García or Master Fruchel - whose hand, in fact, is also felt in the neighboring Basilica of San Vicente and its famous cenotaph of the Holy Martyrs, which we will have the opportunity to see later- who carried out the execution of such a magnificent temple, if we take into account, something as evident as supposing that both, apparently, knew the fundamental bases of the language of God: Sacred Geometry.

In fact, if we go back to the time of its construction, the 11th-12th centuries, and we take into account the context of the events that undoubtedly marked those centuries, as the hottest centuries of what could well be called a clash of civilizations between Christianity and the Muslim world, we can also understand that under the slogan of the Crusades -Deus lo vult or God wills it, words with which Pope Urban II encouraged the First Crusade- we will not be surprised that, regardless of their sacred functions, also the cathedral of San Salvador - some historians believe that it retains this name because it was built on an old Mozarabic church that had such a dedication - was designed as a fortress, forming its apse or header, part of the solid defensive walls, which still, after the centuries, they remain almost intact, safeguarding a city on which time could be said to have stopped.

One of the characteristics that also makes it different from the other cathedrals lies in the materials used in its construction, these being mainly the abundant stone of this region, known as berroque and which has a vermilion color, similar to the coloration of the blood, due to its high content of iron ore, a detail that gives it an unheard-of sanguine appearance, which can also be seen in the aforementioned Basilica of San Vicente.

Leaving aside the successive chapels and the cloister, which were built in different historical periods, dating back to the 14th-17th centuries, the original framework is supernaturally elegant, where the slender columns and elegant flying buttresses distributed along the transept of the nave, support some spectacular vaults, which speak of a superhuman engineering work, executed with the utmost precision.

P1100076_acopia.jpg

Distributed in the shape of a star, they also make up that symbolic aspect that came to conform ancient axioms, such as that of the mythical character Hermes Trismegistus -whose life, like that of the famous miracle worker of Hellenic origin, Apollonius of Tyana, navigates between reality and the legend- in whose Emerald Table or Tabula Smeraldina, affirmed that what is above is equal to what is below and that perhaps, also explains, apart from a merely physical question, the magnificent observation of the master of German Romanticism, Goethe, when he affirmed that the builders of cathedrals were looking for God in the heights.

P1100122_acopia.jpg

Its ambulatory is also spectacular, crowning an ambulatory -common to many cathedrals and even many monasteries of Romanesque origin- based on the symbolic model of the Sepulchrum Domine in Jerusalem, the spectacular series of stained glass windows, whose plays of light produce true optical effects in different places of the nave and the magnificent rose window or mystical rose, whose representation, in some cases, referred to the uneven and capricious Wheel of Fortune.

P1100158_acopia.jpg

Also noteworthy is the Main Altarpiece, begun in 1502 by Pedro Berruguete and finished by Juan de Borgoña, two of the greatest artists who left the mark of their mastery in many places in the old and infinite Castile.

It is another of the many surprises that you can find in a city like Ávila. I still recommend it to you. Thank you very much for your comment.

Love the ceiling of the Cathedral, it is amazing. I can only imagine how hard it is in building it.

Precisely, especially considering that we are talking, nothing more and nothing less, than the twelfth century onwards and if we take this fact into account and the rudimentary technology of the time, we have to recognize that it is a work of giants. Greetings
