Within those pilgrimage routes, which, in order to avoid the dangers of entering the interior and having unfortunate encounters with the Muslim armies that still, in those first centuries of the so-called Late Middle Ages, dominated a good part of the Iberian Peninsula, directing Such iron control from the powerful Caliphate of Córdoba, the Cantabrian coast, with its hardness and its impressive and rugged paths, offered the pilgrim the possibility of alternative routes, which allowed him to continue, with certain guarantees of security, his transcendental journey towards Compostela, the tomb of the Apostle and beyond, to the ends of the earth, just as it was supposed then to one of the most remote and northern capes: Finisterre.

Due to his knowledge of agriculture, botany and the use of natural environments, on those infinite paths, the erection of churches, monasteries and hermitages, offered the pilgrim not only a sanctuary where he could regain strength to continue his journey in the best possible conditions, but also the application of a word, 'hospitality', which derived far beyond a simple welcome: the health care of the time, providing remedies, based on the great botanical knowledge available to the monks, which, after all, could be considered as the primitive antecedents of what we have come to know today with the term of social security.

Por su conocimiento de la agricultura, la botánica y el aprovechamiento de los entornos naturales, en esos infinitos caminos, el levantamiento de iglesias, monasterios y ermitas, ofrecía al peregrino, no sólo un santuario donde reponer fuerzas para poder continuar su Dentro de esos caminos de peregrinación, que, para evitar los peligros que suponían adentrarse en el interior y tener desafortunados encuentros con los ejércitos musulmanes que todavía, por aquellos primeros siglos de la denominada Baja Edad Media, dominaban buena parte de la Península Ibérica, dirigiendo tal férreo control desde el poderoso Califato de Córdoba, la costa del Cantábrico, con su dureza y sus impresionantes y accidentados senderos, ofrecían, al peregrino, la posibilidad de rutas alternativas, que le permitían continuar, con ciertas garantías de seguridad, su viaje trascendental hacia Compostela, la tumba del Apóstol y más allá, a los confines de la tierra, tal y como se suponía entonces a uno de los cabos más apartados y septentrionales: Finisterre.

camino en las mejores condiciones posibles, sino, también, la aplicación de una palabra, ‘hospitalidad’, que derivaba mucho más allá de una simple acogida: la atención sanitaria de la época, proporcionando unos remedios, basados en el gran conocimiento botánico del que disponían los monjes, lo cual, después de todo, podría considerarse como los primitivos antecedentes de lo que hoy venimos conociendo con el término de seguridad social.
