[ENG-SPN] Old hospitals on the Way / Antiguos hospitales del Camino

A new day dawns in one of the most maritime towns on the Cantabrian coast: San Vicente de la Barquera. La Barquera, of course, is not, but a reference to one of the Marian figures most revered by the fishermen who fish in these tumultuous waters, being, however, one more of the legendary incarnations of a Virgin, that of Carmen, who every summer it receives, decked out in flowers, the promenade that the fishermen's guilds grant it, being taken out, in the smell of crowds, captaining the keel of a humble boat. At the height of the so-called King's Palace -whose origins are supposed to be as early as the 8th century, when Alfonso I, one of the first kings of the recently created Asturian monarchy, repopulated and secured the area- the old Puerta de los Pilgrims -now without hinges or timber and with free access to everyone- continues to carry out its work, attracting all those who, driven to make their personal adventure come true, come to these heights to request the protection of the Virgin of the Angels -Gothic image, of the so-called Theotókos or Throne of God and at the same time, Virgin of the Milk or Lactating Virgin, who gives suck to the Son, a representation that was very popular, although, for 'decency', it was prohibited from the XVI century - located in the main altarpiece of the church, Romanesque-Gothic, which, like the castle, dominates not only the town, but also the impressive marshes that surround it, eternally observed by the proximity of that imposing mountain range , known as the Europe Peaks.

A few meters above the old palace of the powerful Corro family -whose most illustrious members rest in the previously mentioned church- and today, the seat of the San Vicente de la Barquera Town Hall, an old, unrecognizable ruin, powerfully draws the attention of both pilgrims, like visitors, sighing for times gone by, which, in their case, it is undoubtedly thought that they were certainly better: it is the old pilgrims' hospital of La Concepción. One of the many, which, apart from the services offered by churches and monasteries, was created with the sole and pious purpose of helping, treating and offering shelter to pilgrims, who, as stated in the small church of Roncesvalles, they did not look at their color, nor their race, nor their faith. Something worth taking into account and what should be learned today, since they collect, in form and fact, the famous words of Christ: 'I was a pilgrim and you welcomed me into your house'.

Formerly there was a great concept of hospitality. Concept, which, unfortunately, is being lost in these times of rampant selfishness. These ruins remind us of those times, those noble attitudes. Therefore, we must feel respect. I appreciate your comment. Kind regards
