On the outskirts of Villaviciosa, the ancient Maliayo and by default, the eternal region of cider - that intoxicating potion, of possible Celtic origin and that some compare with the excellence of Hindu soma - an old church attracts attention for its unique Romanesque architecture , as well as for the curious shell, in the shape of a fan, that protects its main portico, on whose doorway, located to the west - in which, symbolically, the faithful entered from the darkness of the world to the light of the spirit - on whose doorway Those singularities similar to some Asturian temples of their time and characteristics are once again appreciated, which are known, due to their shape and style, with the name 'Norman birds'. It is the old and mysterious church of San Juan de Amandi.

An interesting church, there is no doubt, of which there has always been the oral presumption that it once belonged to the Order of the Knights Templar, although, as generally happens in these cases, especially in regards to the Principality of Asturias refers, there is, unfortunately, no historical documentation to support it. And yet, in view of its curious symbology, it is impossible not to think of the recommendations of the Templar Master, Roncellin, when he said: 'and in the places you live, always leave signs of recognition'.

A las afueras de Villaviciosa, la antigua Maliayo y por defecto, la eterna comarca de la sidra -esa pócima embriagadora, de posible origen celta y que algunos comparan con la excelencia del soma hindú- una vieja iglesia llama la atención por su singular arquitectura románica, así como por el curioso caparazón, en forma de abanico, que protege su pórtico principal, en cuya portada, situada a poniente -en la que, simbólicamente, el fiel entraba de la oscuridad del mundo a la luz del espíritu- en cuya portada se vuelven a apreciar esas singularidades afines a algunos templos asturianos de su época y características, que se conocen, por su forma y estilo, con la denominación de ‘aves normandas’. Es la vieja y misteriosa iglesia de San Juan de Amandi.

Una iglesia interesante, no cabe duda alguna, de la que siempre ha existido la presunción oral de que en tiempos perteneciera a la Orden de los Caballeros Templarios, aunque, como suele ocurrir generalmente en estos casos, sobre todo, en cuanto al Principado de Asturias se refiere, no existe, por desgracia, documentación histórica que lo avale. Y sin embargo, en vista de su curiosa simbología, resulta imposible no pensar en las recomendaciones del Maestro templario, Roncellin, cuando decía aquello de: ‘y en los sitios que habitéis, dejad siempre los signos de reconocimiento’.
