[ENG-SPN] Templars and grandmother's tales / Templarios y cuentos de la abuela

Time and one of its most faithful allies, the wind, have progressively eroded the details, but still, after centuries, you can still appreciate, as a whole, the silhouette of the old Templar knight who guarded, on this other side of the old bridge that separates the church-fortress of Santa María, from the Jewish quarter of a well-known city in Extremadura, exercising the right to pay the corresponding toll, money, which, of course, always went to the coffers of those who well you could say that they were the forerunners of modern banking and the concept of large multinationals, at as early an age as, of course, we can assume the 12th century to be.

The locals also affirm -and this is how they stage it, too, in plays intended to encourage the interest of visitors and tourists in the place- that a curse weighs on this gentleman and that, on holy nights, he usually appears to all those , who, ignoring the advice of Tradition, proudly transgress the recommendation to stay in their homes -like the daring gentleman, Don Alonso de Alcudiel, unfortunate protagonist of the overwhelming legend of Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, entitled 'El Monte de las Ánimas' and also set on the banks of another river- assuming, at the cost of paying a high price, that the supernatural and its laws are just grandmother's tales.

El tiempo y uno de sus más fieles aliados, el viento, han ido erosionando progresivamente los detalles, pero todavía, al cabo de los siglos, se puede apreciar, en su conjunto, la silueta del viejo caballero templario que custodiaba, a este otro lado del viejo puente que separa la iglesia-fortaleza de Santa María, del barrio judío de una conocida ciudad de Extremadura, ejerciendo el derecho al pago del correspondiente portazgo, dinero, que, por supuesto, iba siempre a parar a las arcas de los que bien se podría decir que fueron los precursores de la banca moderna y el concepto de las grandes multinacionales, a una edad tan temprana, como, desde luego, podemos suponer que es el siglo XII.

Afirman, además, los lugareños -y así lo escenifican, también, en obras teatrales destinadas a fomentar el interés de visitantes y turistas por el lugar- que sobre este caballero pesa una maldición y que, en noches de guardar, suele aparecerse a todos aquellos, que, haciendo caso omiso de las consejas de la Tradición, transgreden, orgullosamente, la recomendación de permanecer en sus casas -como el audaz caballero, don Alonso de Alcudiel, desafortunado protagonista de la sobrecogedora leyenda de Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, titulada ‘El Monte de las Ánimas’ y ambientada, también, a orillas de otro río- suponiendo, a costa del pago de un alto precio, que lo sobrenatural y sus leyes, son sólo cuentos de la abuela.
