[ENG-SPN] Visigothic memories / Recuerdos visigodos

One of the great heritage landmarks that the pilgrim encounters during the hard stages through those so-called Gothic Fields that demarcate a good part of the lands of Palencia, is none other than this enigmatic temple, of Hispano-Visigothic origin, dedicated to the figure of 'the one who had to decrease so that Christ could shine'. That is, his cousin, John the Baptist.

Located in the Cerrato region, on the outskirts of a town that bears the curious name of Baños, its rough, but nevertheless elegant plan, recalls, in the dark assets of its interior, the memory of the real presences of a lost empire, like that of King Recesvintus, the print of whose hand, according to Tradition, provides good luck to those who place theirs on it and a curious source of hypothetical medicinal virtues, which, located a few meters away, was reputed to be relieve rheumatism.

Uno de los grandes hitos patrimoniales con los que se encuentra el peregrino en el transcurso de las duras etapas por esos denominados Campos Góticos que demarcan buena parte de las tierras de Palencia, no es otro que este enigmático templo, de origen hispano-visigodo, dedicado a la figura de ‘aquel que tenía que menguar para que Cristo brillara’. Es decir, de su primo, Juan el Bautista.

Situado en la comarca del Cerrato, a las afueras de un pueblo que lleva el curioso nombre de Baños, su tosca, aunque, no obstante, elegante planta, rememora, en los oscuros haberes de su interior, el recuerdo de las presencias reales de un imperio perdido, como la del rey Recesvinto, la huella de cuya mano, según la Tradición, proporciona buena suerte a quien pone la suya encima y una curiosa fuente, de hipotéticas virtudes medicinales, que, situada a algunos metros de distancia, tenía fama de aliviar los reumatismos.
