Most farmers fail to do this by taking daily or periodic records of their farms. But it serves many purposes for you are the farmer to know the state of the crops that have been cultivated on the field. We have many ways of doing this. "You can take records by observing, taking qualitative and quantitative measuring, checking plants health status and improvement."This also gives you a clue of any abnormalities which are likely to take place in the farm.
Yesterday when we closed from school I visited my maize farm around 3:15 pm to take some few records. I've given updates that my latest maize farm the grains were sown at 15th April 2023. This date is serving as a guide to know the duration the maize would take to mature and harvest if all things being equal. In this case I'm also monitoring the welfare of the maize plants. The farming is a process and I would make sure to take every step very seriously. So yesterday I took my ruler to measure few samples of my maize plants to know if they are growing normally. Even though there were other side of activities to be done in the farm, but I had to take my time to see how the maizes are growing.
Measuring and recording the growth Height of Maize plant
When I used the rule to measure from the base to the top, I recorded 15cm. I think it's quite normal for maize plants that are 14 days old( two weeks). This shows that the soil rich in organic matter content. Even though the growth height can also be due to the varieties of the maize whether they are early maturing ones or late maturing ones. But to my studies, maize plants that have been germinated from day one to one month should have similar germination rate irrespective of the varieties. If only the conditions necessary for growth of plants are available then I think they plants should grow at normal pace. For instance,rich loamy soil with good aeration, humus, PH between 5-6 and good drainage ability, there is the probability of the plants to grow in healthy mood.
It's assume that by 1 week time the maize plants on average should reach a height of 22cm. This height should at least increase by 3cm if I'm able to apply NPK Fertilizer 23:15:10. In addition to this, the size of the maize plants would increase. Some of the measures to help improve the status is by frequent weeding to support the maize plants absorb most of plants nutrients. By the way, all the maize plants weren't cultivated the same day, I had some maize plants that have height below 10cm since they were planted very late.
The last maize that I cultivated less that 2 weeks ago
I also have few maize plants which I cultivated about 3 weeks ago they are nearly 30cm and also having good stands. I have decided not to apply fertilizer at this minor season since the land is still fertile. I'll be applying the fertilizer at the minor season when the nutrients contents have been used up by the first maize. I've seen a lot of cocoyam growing that would made me quit spraying the farm with herbicides. The herbicides would destroy the cocoyam leaves and that's my fear.

If I don't spray then I had to begin the weeding very early so that the weeds do not over shadow or compete with the maize. But I'm either planning to spray half of the farm with herbicides and weed half of it. However, I will begin the weeding this evening after closing from school. Garden or farming is my passion.
