The Second Batch Of My Tomatoes Harvest Is Ready, Measures to Prevent Post Harvest Losses

avatar
Greetings Comrades of @diyhub! It's another great day to share with you Guys! "The second batch of my tomatoes harvest is ready. It's barely a week now that I harvested the first batch in bulk. I had 4 boxes which I sent to market for sales. Each box was sold at $70.83. This multiplied by 4 gives $283.32 I was very excited 😊 since tomatoes weren't in abundance in the market, even though it keeps coming every day. We are the first growers of tomatoes and for what I've seen for many years in tomatoes business, those early planters meet higher prices if the weather conditions is favorable.

Yeah, if all things been equal, I would be harvesting them them tomorrow. The way that most of the fruits have been ripening and the rate of the rainfall, I don't want to joke for the fruits to get rotten. When I visited the farm today most of them have turned red and others too are ripening. I touched few of them and they are very soft and succulent. Ideally, we don't let all the fruits to ripe completely especially when the buyers are traveling with long journey which would take them more than a day. After harvest, the tomatoes have to be kept in boxes that have enough ventilation to reduce the risks of rotten. Very tight and enclosed area encourage aerobic bacteria decomposition. If that happens as a Farmer, you are going to incur losses.

Testing the ripening levels of my tomato fruits

Post harvest losses of tomatoes that are normally incurred

Post Harvest Losses are conditions that lead to losses of harvested produce due to certainly organisms or unfavorable weather conditions. Post harvest losses of tomatoes can be prevented if precautionary measures are taken. Right from ripening, the tomatoes can perish within a short time. Since tomato fruits have short sheath life after ripening. It should remain on the farm if the humidity is too high especially when there is series of rainfall. Careful must be ensured during harvesting. The cracks ones must be separated from the healthy ones so that the liquid doesn't come in contact with the fresh ones. The containers that would be used for packaging should be dried. That's why preferably we use wooden boxes which have ventilated structure so that more aeration is encouraged. Rotten tomatoes reduce market value and buyers wouldn't buy at good rate.

The right tomatoes farm fruits in view

Conditions of very high temperature exceeding 40°C would cause most of the water content to reduce. Buyers would hesitate to buy if the water content is lost. High humidity also cause most of the water content to lost. When harvesting, the pedicel should not be entirely removed from the scar of the fruit. If it does happen, the fruit rot very quickly. Sometimes pressure in vehicle for conveying the riped fruits from farm gate to market cause a lot of destruction through shaking and knocking of each fruits. Especially if the road is in deplorable state little shaken of the vehicle would cause some of the fruits to damage. That's why it's advisable to do sorting and grading before taken the build fruits to market for sales. All the spoiled ones meed to be sorted out from the healthy ones.

Actually there is no recommended chemicals for spraying tomatoes fruits after harvest since the fruits become ready for consumption after harvest. The efficacy of the chemical will remain in the tomatoes fruits for more that 3 days and tomato fruits after ripened take no more than 3 days to begin to rot unless kept frozen method. But fresh tomatoes fruits are only kept for few days. It can be kept in deep freezer for few days like few weeks.

Processing of riped tomatoes

In Ghana, we don't have well furnished processing machine that can convert raw tomatoes fruits to tomatoes paste or other form. With the introduction of one district one factory, we tried to construct one tomatoes factory at Nkoranza, the most production of tomatoes farm. It has began working for few tomatoes fruits but not in large quantity. But for developed Countries, fresh tomatoes can be processed into tomatoes paste and well package in Cans and papers. This can let it last for 6 months to 1 year. My best is to farm and harvest for sales. Thanks for your attention!
