Woman with cigarette.png

Greetings, friends of #Hive and the Sketchbook community. Today I'm excited to share with you a drawing that I made last Friday and I've been editing since Saturday, in my free time, with a lot of patience and dedication because it gave me more work than I expected, until I finished it a couple of hours ago.

This drawing is inspired by Janet Flanner, an American journalist of great renown who lived during the first and second world war and was even at the side of people like Ernest Hemingway; although it was not for this reason that I drew her. Actually, I was in the library that Friday, thinking about what I could draw and I remembered that a few months ago I had seen a photo of this woman in a photography book entitled Ten Photography Exhibitions. Her photo had caught my attention because of the tired look she has and how much she transmits, so I looked for the book and started to draw her.

This picture was taken by Inge Morath, you can look it up on the internet if you like. I'm not sharing it here so as not to infringe copyright.

Once I finished the sketch, I knew that this drawing was ideal to try something I've wanted to do for a long time. You see, I've been wandering around the community for a while now and looking at the excellent work here, learning as much as I can from the posts and wondering how to achieve this or that with my drawings. I wanted to go from the stark black outline to an almost imperceptible one, where the lines were just a little darker than the color of the clothing or skin. Plus, I also wanted to achieve that color gradient that looks so cool in good digital art. All this meant redoing the drawing in photoshop, having as a guide the sketch and the photo from the book (which I brought home), and trying out various tools in the program and doing some more research on the subject, so I got to work.

Boceto.jpgWoman with cigarette (1).jpg

This is the photo of the finished sketch and the image of when I edited it in photoshop to be able to work on it. The initial sketch, made freehand with pencil, had turned out better than when I outlined it with pen, but I didn't care, because the real work came later.

I started with the face, defining the skin color and at the same time making the gradients to give volume. I didn't finish it all right away, because the eye you see on the right, I had to make it smaller once I had advanced enough because I realized that it was a little big compared to the other one. It also took me some time to define those shadows that didn't fit in this part of the process because it jumped from the face to the hair and vice versa.

Then began one of my headaches: the hair. Although I liked the result a lot, I first spent a few hours making the hair lines, changing from white to gray and from gray to black, lowering the opacity of the brush, erasing, redoing the lines, concentrating on achieving a realism that would never come. As much as I tried to be guided by the photo in the book, in the end I decided to adapt to the demands of the drawing in front of me and continue with the lines I had already drawn.

That night I went to sleep tired, but satisfied. And the next day, Sunday to be exact, after running some errands, I continued working on the drawing and came up against another wall: the wrinkles.

I didn't know how to make them look good and in harmony with the rest of the drawing, so after experimenting with various methods I could think of at the time, I managed to make them really thin, but visible. I remember that day, while I was on the street minding my own business, if I saw an old man I would look at his wrinkles while I was thinking how to achieve that in photoshop. And although I don't think I passed the test and surely there are other ways to do it easier, once finished, I was comfortable with them. Here, as you may notice, I also show you the lips, but it was necessary to do them at once because the wrinkles on the lower lip demanded it.

Then I chose a charcoal gray for the scarf and made purple stripes. Here I had already moved completely away from photography and I dedicated myself to finish the drawing in my own way, without so many pressures, but without forgetting to take into account the shadows and lights of it.

Then came a part that I enjoyed a lot and in which I was also a little blind. The lack of details in the sketch played a trick on me, so I spent a long time defining the shadows of the clothes, which by the way I painted in mustard color.

Woman with cigarette (6).jpg

If you look at the photo, this woman's coat has a texture that enriches the composition and to achieve that in the drawing I used the pen tool. First I tried several brushes until I got the right one and then I made between seven and eight vertical strokes. I applied the outline to those strokes, lowered the opacity of the layer and started to distribute it all over the clothes, while I duplicated the layers and followed the pattern I had created, erasing here and there, leaving without texture the parts where the strongest shadows were to give it more depth. Here is a screenshot of the second part of this process, in which I did practically the same, but forming a grid pattern.

I really liked that texture. Then I did the hand, following the same process of the skin of the face and worked more on the shading of the drawing.

Finally, I did the cigarette and smoke. In this part I had opted for a vinotint background, but then I changed my mind.

In the end, I opted for a black background, with the light coming from the right, like the light in the original photograph.

I hope I didn't bore you with the process, friends. From my perspective, this drawing doesn't look like the original photograph, so I chose to call it "Woman with cigarette"; but I couldn't help mentioning where the inspiration came from. I really appreciate you making it this far. See you next time.
