Solomon pivoted away from the alley as his friend Lucy approached. The last person he wanted to see that day. Immediately, his hands slid behind his back hoping she didn't see the stash.

"You're up to no good again Solomon, I can tell." Lucy's smile instantly melted his anxious expression. He couldn't help it. She'd vouched for him on several occasions when his own parents failed to attend school meetings. In fact, he would've been expelled last year had it not been for the small-statue-female who all in the community jokingly nicknamed the "tall avenger".

That Lucy didn't play favorites and was hell-bent on assisting youth and elderly in the neighborhood was widely known. Take a problem to her, and somehow, she'd help solve it or place you in contact with services that could assist.

But this last encounter with a rival gang spooked him.

"I'll call in the troops."

Solomon understood the cue. "Oh, no. Not another nun. I'll be seventeen next month and will be labeled a sissy having you all fight my battles."

"I don't see any of those so-called friends running to your aid. Do you? Sometimes in life, Solomon, you have to choose. Be a follower or a leader. Break free from those who would drag you down and cause you harm. I can see the leader in you. Just trust yourself that you can walk in this life without the crabs in the bucket. Otherwise, you'll never rise to the top. They won't let you."

Sister Lucy paused, waiting for a positive response. Solomon just hung his head. She knew his family was of no help. He'd never break free and get out of this neighborhood, except incarceration or the morgue.

Volunteering once a week at the youth center, Lucy met Solomon. The moment their eyes met, she sensed a determined, yet lonely young man. Determined to do what, she didn't know. But she felt intervention was needed. Especially after witnessing the group of young men who accosted him.

A week after their chance meeting near the alley, Sister Lucy understood the dire situation Solomon faced after accidentally meeting his parents.

The luck of the draw to be born to parents such as his. That they weren't worried for their child's safety or well-being was evident. One must navigate life as best one can with the cards dealt, she thought. Extremely difficult in some cases for children not possessing a strong character.

Sister Lucy peered out the volunteer center's window as a lovely young lady of high school age stood close to Solomon. The movement of her lips and body language suggested an intense argument was taking place.

It was when the young lady turned sideways and pointed to her stomach that Sister Lucy's eyes widened; not with surprise, but compassion.

A heated argument ensued. Hands flailing, the girl fingered a necklace as she continued the conversation. Solomon's head jerked back. Glancing furtively over his shoulder, he pushed his hair back from his forehead. By all appearances, she'd just delivered unexpected news. The two were in a predicament they didn't understand. Apparently, their parents hadn't advised them on the risks of unprotected sex.

Now Sister Lucy partly understood his involvement with the local miscreants. He needed funds for more than himself.

However the two entangled in a situation they were unprepared for, needed counseling on navigating a viable path forward. Yet, would they be willing to accept intervention from a stranger? Not knowing the young lady, Sister Lucy's faith prompted her to at least approach the subject with Solomon.

The next day later that evening, Sister Lucy spied Solomon standing outside the center waiting on a transaction connection, hands dug deep into his pockets; a cigarette hanging from his mouth.

Stepping outside, she approached Solomon who quickly removed the cigarette.

Solomon glanced around sheepishly. "You know about these things, right?"

"Of course. You can confide in me. It won't go any further."

"Well," he stammered, "I've gotten Carla into trouble. My friends told me that if I pulled out in time, it would be fine."

Sister Lucy suppressed a smile. "And Carla agreed? I surmised as much when I saw you two together last week. Didn't seem as though that method worked. Sounds like a simple case of the misguided leading the blind."

Solomon hung his head. He'd no answer.

"In my position, I'm not at liberty to judge. I don't totally blame you for not knowing. Part of the problem is that society has failed its youth by not allowing access to basic life education. And yes, your body and how it functions is part of that education if you are to be fully informed. If you don't mind, I'd like to offer you some assistance. There's a parenting course and a life course being offered at the center. That is, if you and your girlfriend are willing to attend. I'm not advising you how to handle your situation. Just listen and you two decide what's best for your future."

She could tell that a heavy weight had been lifted from his shoulders just by being a non-judgemental listener.

"At this point, there's no way we know which direction to go."

"I suggest that you each inform your parents. Sometimes they can surprise you. Perhaps they may be willing to attend the courses with you. You'll both need their support systems."

"I'm willing to try anything at this point."

"But first, you'll need to reassess your neighborhood acquaintances. Their goals in life are not in your best interest. Whatever your choices in the matter of you and Carla, your futures would be better served inside the law instead of outside."

Solomon didn't respond. He just shook his head and let escape a wry smile, acknowledging that he understood.

Sister Lucy extended her arms wide. Without hesitation, Solomon fell into them, then pulled back quickly, hoping his friends hadn't caught a glimpse of that exchange.

No podía evitarlo.

No sabía qué responder.

No te estoy aconsejando cómo manejar tu situación.

Solomon no respondió.

What a touching, beautiful story. Sister Lucy is a likeable character. She looked beyond Solomon's mistakes to help guide him. He really needed someone in his corner. It's heartbreaking that he had to look for support outside his own family and I love that she offered him a safe space to talk without making him feel judged. Sometimes having just one person who believes in you can make a difference in the choices you make. Sister Lucy may not be able to fix everything for Solomon but she's giving him something valuable: the chance to believe that his life can turn out differently.

Solomon fell into them, then pulled back quickly, hoping his friends hadn't caught a glimpse of that exchange.

Okay, I think it's about time he ditched the unhelpful friends who are bent on leading him astray.

Beautifully written as always. Take care and have a relaxing Sunday. 🌹
