29 May, Freewriters Community Daily Writing Prompt (Day 3118) Part 7 | Prompt: throw him under the bus (echarle la culpa a él)

! [Recap Parts 1 Thru 6]
Empty nester Beverly Buckley felt a bit depressed that particular summer morning when she hatched a peculiar plan. Why not "throw under the bus", referring to her husband, Lionel, after a mishap in their subdivision involving the death of the community petunias.
Preston Milworth, HOA President, set out to locate the culprit before their next HOA meeting. Beverly provided the anonymous tip that led him to her doorstep to confront her husband his best friend and next door neighbor, Stanley. Unable to defend himself, Preston concluded that Lionel was guilty. Stanley blurted out his neighborhood suppression and undercover militia operation by the HOA.
Inside, Beverly watched through the blinds, listening. She didn't count on Preston taking his vindictive nature to the extreme.
The HOA sent a Demand Letter demanding $5K as restitution for the damaged flowers. The neighborhood petunia crisis mushroomed into a full-blown assault on her family with financial consequences she didn't anticipate in her "throw him under the bus" scheme.
The situation required desperate measures. Beverly pondered that night how best to handle the situation. Once a solution presented itself from reading her 15-year old diary, a brilliant idea materialized that included Stanley's niece. Convincing the niece to agree to her plan proved easier than the imagined. Now, if the niece could just reel in Preston would remove another obstacle in her quest to remedy the petunia debacle.

Summer of the Great Petunia Poisoning and Other Dilemmas
Candice marveled so at the Buckley's uniquely-shaped pool that Beverly invited her to take a quick, cooling dip. How intuitive. A bathing suit lay waiting in her handbag, anxious to show off her flattering figure. It was a scene right out of the movies; her exiting the pool. It reminded Beverly of the Honey Ryder scene in James Bond. Candice was a professional, indeed. Finally, Candice left.
Alone again at her kitchen countertop workstation, Beverly smiled, noticing the number on the caller ID.
"Kevin, good to hear from you. I'm already missing you," stretching the truth. How's your first month of college? Tell me everything from class schedule, to courses, and don't leave out the parties," she laughed.
"I didn't call to give an update on college life. It's about dad. I heard from my friend who lived in our cul-de-sac that dad is in serious trouble with that horrible HOA. Is it true? If so, what's the deal?"
Beverly hoped word hadn't spread. But subdivision gossip was infamous. Taking a long, deep breath, in an even tone, she lied, "we've got the situation under control. Nothing to worry about."
"OK, if you say so. But remember, you've got help. Milton is an expert organizer. And we've had enough of that HOA President. He made our lives miserable growing up. In fact, Milton confided that he and a group of our old friends are forming a rally in support of dad."
Kevin waited for his mom's approval. Silence, as she was apt to do when disagreeing.
But Kevin continued, excitement oozing from his words.
"It's gonna be over the top. We'll show that Preston Milworth. Our next door neighbor Mr. Stanley, with the really cool niece, is launching a "FREE LIONEL" campaign. We'll all wear matching khaki shorts like dad's. Milton will print bootleg t-shirts and work with Mr. Stanley to organize a protest at our neighborhood Piglie Wiglie. They'll march toward the HOA Meeting."
Kevin finally caught a breath.
"You wouldn't believe the number of neighborhood teens who hate mowing lawns and the residents sick and tired of HOA fines. Milton already reported that his parents heard that since the assault on dad, he's being hailed as an underbrush hero. Who would've thought my dad...a folk hero. A real bummer that I won't be able to join them this weekend. But they have my full support. I'm spreading the word."
Lordy, Lord. Teen protestors. All I need is another wrinkle I'll have to iron out, Beverly lamented shaking her head in disbelief.

Meanwhile, Lionel reached Stanley.
"This is unlawful, man. Where's our due process? Any fool knows you have the right to defend yourself. As I said two days ago, Preston is out to get us. It's not about those damn flowers. He could care less. A false flag operation, remember? YOU WILL NOT GIVE THEM A DIME!"
"But Stanley, this looks serious. Should I get a lawyer?
"No!" he repeated. "Let me handle this. We have to stop them. Tyranny at its finest. They think they can just boll us over, and we'll lie down like weeds on the law. We will defend ourselves!"
But Stanley, the charges are against me, not you!
Doesn't matter. If they get you, I'm next. And neighbor two doors down. Then three. Who knows how far and deep this secret operation goes. We're non-conformists. We won't be bullied. Not this time. What we need and the Subdivision doesn't is a protest. One so large that the news media will cover it. Our faces will be flashed across the big screen. No-name homeowners fighting the tyrannical H.O.A.!
Stanley stood salivating his already perceived victory. "One thing, Lionel, we need to give them the real culprit. I hate to say it, but Beverly must go down. It's for the cause, man. For the cause!"
For the first time, the gleam in Stanley's eyes rattled Lionel spiraling his pulse out of control. He gasped, not knowing what to say or object to, let alone how he would resolve his dilemma.
What he really wanted to do was gather enough courage to slap Stanley back into that afternoon and put a stop to his nonsense; to say that Beverly was his wife, and that he loved her regardless of her personality.
Instead, he maintained radio silence. For Beverly's sake.

That night across town, Candice readied herself. Taking the initiative, she called Preston earlier on the burner phone he'd gifted her after their first meet-up last year. For one so young, Candice was quick and efficient, having bloomed way too early for her years.
Candice donned the requested La Perla with a side holster attire for the night, then waited, thinking. Wonder what's up? He must be particularly agitated this appointment, requesting extra restraints. No matter. Whatever accommodations and accessories the client requests (within reason, of course).
The honey trap was set.
Preston arrived on time as usual, overly pleased with himself. And why not? He'd bested Lionel Buckley, dismissed that stupid neighbor, Stanley Moss, and convinced the HOA Board to issue the demand letter. Five Thousand would bring in a hefty sum for the HOA's projects, minus his take, if he were able to successfully collect.
Greeting him as usual under dim lights and candles, Candice stripped the coat from his shoulders as she issued orders in an authoritative, but sultry tone. Wipe that stupid grin off your face, private! You're about to go into battle. The enemy you're about to encounter is nothing nice. Are you ready?
Preston grinned widely, nodded silently, then complied.
Candice tucked the crisp one-hundred dollar bills under the belt strap. The whip's snap brought Preston to attention. She then proceeded to earn what was paid for in the expert manner she was famous for.
Preston lay satisfied, basking in his supposed conquest.
But it didn't last long. He'd one final loose end to tie up. That damn Mrs. Higgins. The nosy resident in the community. He pushed Candice away.
"What's wrong, Big Daddy?" she purred. "Need another round."
"Loose lips sink ships. Can't trust family to do anything right. All I asked for was an inexpensive treatment. He promised he knew how to maintain thoes damn petunias. Simple, he said," looking back at Candice while hurriedly dressing, glancing at his watch.
"Don't leave in such a state. Sit for a moment and tell me all your troubles. I'm a good listener as well."
Preston was indeed exhausted. He plopped down on the side of the bed, smiled broadly, and waited as Candice poured them another drink.

«¡No!», repitió.
No importa.

Preston estaba realmente agotado.

I see the consequences of Beverly's little scheme keep multiplying even as she tries to get things under control. A full blow campaign by college kids? Lionel is popular and favoured than I expected. But this also shows that Preston's tyranny has been going on for so long that even the younger generation has picked up on it.
And Candice! She's Beverly's ace card. Preston is finally talking and we might get a glimpse of what really happened to those flowers. He talks about "loose lips" but his are the loosest of all. 😄 This story keeps getting more interesting. You continue to add unexpected pieces to this debacle and I can't wait to see how it all ends. Well done. Do take care and have a great day. 🌹

I'm having so much fun with this story that I don't want it to end. But it must. Hopefully, I can do it satisfactorily. What I wanted to ask was whether I went too far with Candice and Preston? I only wanted to allude to his eccentric proclivities and not be explicit with this dark side to his personality. I say "dark side". That's my stoic senior citizen's point of view. It may well be normal to others, so I try not to judge...just report.
Thank you so much for your visit and for sticking with the story. I'm so pleased you liked how it's flowing. Someone killed those petunias. We need to get to the bottom of it BEFORE the HOA meeting in two days. Somebody is going down!
Take care and have a nice rest of your weekend.
Not at all. I thought you handled Candice and Preston's dalliance well, giving your readers enough information to understand what was going on without turning the scene into something explicit. The scene also tells us plenty about Preston's personality.
And yes, someone must answer for those petunias and I suspect Preston might be the one taking the biggest hit especially with all the stunts he's been pulling using his position in the HOA. Well done.
I'm glad you think so because I was worried. Chapter 8 will be the finale and will wrap up the neighborhood saga. I hope Beverly is able to use all her skills to uncover the culprit whichever direction it leads.
I appreciate the engagement with my story. Take care.
I'm looking forward to the finale. I'm sure Beverly will uncover the culprit and Preston will get his just dessert. Thanks so much for the tip. 🌹
