"If you don't get the hell out of my office this instant, I'm going to push the button. Security will then come and remove you from the building." Jay Hennings twisted his mouth, then curled his lip while loosely shaking his head as if to dare. But the venomous look in Charlotte's stare as she leaned over her desk and stared directly into his scheming eyes paused his antics and made him take notice.

Startled, Jay retreated, then threw up his hands, flashing a weak gesture of defeat, before turning and gently closing her office door. He knew what he was doing.

Charlotte heaved a heavy sigh before easing down in her seat. She glanced at a desk photo before turning toward the window and staring at the adjacent building. If the deli were located in her own office building, she wouldn't have accidentally bumped into Jay that day during lunch. The moment he reached down and retrieved the overturned tray, slightly brushing the backside of her arm, she knew he was trouble waiting to explode.

It didn't take long for the fireworks to ignite.

The morning after their drinks, Charlotte woke with a blank memory, realizing Jay had spiked her cocktail. Three hours later, he sent photos of her unconscious lying on a hotel bed.

But it was the next cryptic text message hinting at a cover up that infuriated her.

Charlotte didn't panic. She immediately telephoned her boyfriend, who was unavailable at his own job.

She got busy. Nothing I can't handle myself, she concluded.

"Mack, I need you to uncover a digital trail. It's a personal matter that I feel borders on criminality." She provided the information Mack needed to investigate Jay.

What Mack uncovered and reported to Charlotte was exactly what she suspected the moment Jay walked into her office. It wasn't his first try at amateur extortion. Hidden folders containing identical setup scene photos of other women.

But it wasn't just that. She recognized two of the victims.

She took the rest of the day off for visitations. By the end of the day, she'd made contact with the two females who worked in her office complex. Apparently, Jay was careful not to approach anyone in his own building.

Later that evening, Charlotte discussed the matter with her boyfriend, Ivan. It took all her reasoning to restrain him from heading over to Jay's home and confronting him.

Instead, Charlotte proposed a different response that would beat Jay at his own game. First, she and Ivan organized a video call with the two other women. It took a bit of coaxing for the women to relax and admit their almost entanglement with Jay. Good thing they hadn't reached the final phase of his planned extortion. And none of the women had reported the incidents.

"Sounds like Jay used the deli approach on you all too?" Charlotte asked, her voice steady.

"Yes," Mona whispered. "He bumped into me, resulting in me dropping my purse. He then proceeded to invite for an apology drink, then everything went black. The next day, he threatened to ruin my career if I didn't pay for the photo."

"It’s not just about the money," cherry-blond Vicky countered, her face white against her jet black hair. "He didn't just want my cash; he wanted to see me beg. He gets off on the control, targeting successful women just to humiliate us. That's my feeling after you explained the situation."

Christy nodded grimly. "A textbook psychological parasite. He needs the power trip as much as the payday."

Ivan sat listening, jaws clenched. United by rage, he and the women agreed to wait for Mack's report before confronting Jay.

"None of you will pay that creep a penny as long as I'm alive," Jay promised. "And when we're through with him, we'll let the authorities deal with the blackmailer."

As promised, Mack delivered exactly what they needed about Jay, with some some bonus info they hadn't anticipated. Jay had worked long and hard scamming his own company's receivables.

With the information, they set the trap in motion.

Charlotte called Jay back under the pretense of negotiating. When he stepped inside, his smug grin vanished. Ivan, Mona, and Christy walked out from behind her office partition.

"What the hell is this?" Jay stammered, backing toward the door.

Ivan took charge and stepped behind Jay, blocking the door. "You used the exact same deli routine on all of those women," Ivan proclaimed from behind.

"You wanted cash, but you also wanted psychological control to humiliate successful women," Mona spat. Ivan and our significant others are waiting for us to push the button and will have no qualms beating the living daylights out of your sorry ass."

All three women placed their fingers on the green icon on their phones.

"But you see, Jay, we're not amateurs at the game men play to attempt to knock us down a notch from the pedestals we clawed our way to stand upon. You weren't the first, and you won't be the last to try," Charlotte spoke in a smooth and deliberate tone.

"Now, if you're feeling lucky you pathetic excuse of a man, then please do go ahead and make our day," Christy hissed.

Jay’s face turned entirely pale. He began to tremble, realizing his gig was up. He was no longer the hunter; he was the hunted. He would never push blackmail again.

"Look, I’m sorry," he panicked, his voice cracking. "It was all just fun and games. A dare if you know what I mean. I can delete everything. Please, let's just talk about this."

"Too late," Ivan and the women replied simultaneously, pointing to her desk phone, which was actively recording the confession.

The women bypassed him entirely and sent the audio recording and a comprehensive report to his supervisor.

"You're free to go, Jay," Ivan gestured.

Jay tore out of Charlotte's office. He didn't care who saw him. Two minutes later, he'd crossed the street to his own building.

By noon, Charlotte and Ivan watched through her office window, phone on speaker.

"Everything is in place. It's happening now. Waiting in the lobby are two police officers," Mona and Christy confirmed.

Christy provided a phone recording as a security guard escorted a pale, trembling Jay from the elevator, though the office lobby, and handed him over into the hands of the officers.

Out the front of the building Jay walked, head down. His career was ruined, jail was guaranteed, and the control he craved was permanently stripped away.

! [Bad Day For Extortionist Jay]

«No solo quería mi dinero; quería verme suplicar.

Nunca volvería a intentar chantajear a nadie.

I applauded when I got to the paragraph before the last one where Jay was arrested. This was such a satisfying read. Sometimes we need happy endings and you gave it to Charlotte and the other women.

I like that the ending gave Jay's arrogance exactly the consequence it deserved. His character represents a common and disturbing vice where some men get off exploiting, controlling and humiliating confident and successful women. Why? I don't know but it exposes their insecurity and fragile self worth. There's strength in numbers and this story shows how much stronger people become when they share their experiences and fight together. Beautifully written as always. 🌹

Yes @kemmyb, Jay got his just desserts. In life, wrongdoers usually continue until they are caught. Until then, I believe they keep pushing their luck, each time, inching closer to their ultimate goal. We don't know what my character had in mind as his end game, so fortunately, we was stopped before anyone got physically injured in any serious altercation. Bullies will be bullies until they get bullied themselves. Then they run for cover with their tails between their legs.

You are right, shared experiences make us stronger as we fight the good fight together for a solution. I've discovered that no matter what I'm going through in life, there is always someone out their in this world who has undergone the same or a near similar experience.

Thanks so much for your lovely compliment for my story. I appreciate it and your support. Take care.

Well said. Sometimes knowing that we aren't facing something alone is the first step to finding the strength to deal with it. Your story captures this beautifully. Take care.

He'll spend many days rethinking his tactics thanks to the courageous women willing to take him down with the help of their counterpart partners. A semblance of justice handled outside the framework of "justice for all". Thanks for your visit. Take care.
