The Black Leopard | A Fractal and Generative Art Project

A majestic animal the Black Leopard was. Feared by many. In his youth, he reigned king in the arid desert. A smooth brown coat sporting large, oddly-shaped black spots stood out. He was the envy of his clan. In it he basked. But reputations precede one when legend status has been achieved. Venturing out of the realm of one's territory is gamble. Elsewhere, your status is reduced to that of intruder. It's the way of the wild.

Without the protection of his comrades, the Black Leopard met an equally matched alpha. Unafraid, youth triumphed over age. The ensuring battle was short. Struggling to maintain his composure, Black Leopard retreated.

The consequences of fame. However, he could no longer return to his clan.

Headed east was his destination. Tired and unable to hunt, his gait was slow and deliberate. His panting became more pronounced. Evidence of his wounds drew predators. Scavengers stalked, then closed in. Again, the Black Leopard fought courageously to fend them off.

However, the damage was done.

Evening closed in. Under the tree's shade, he rested. Under the glistening moon about to peak out, he watched.

On a shiver of breeze, an unfamiliar voice whispered his name. His ears pricked. His eyes opened wide.

The Black Leopard rose. Following the lullaby of the voice, he headed south. He didn't remember venturing this path before. A few hours later, his feet settled upon soft ground. Arid crackles ceased. Moisture tickled his nose.

A feeling he'd never experienced caught hold. He paced carefully. Grass lined the river bank. He looked upward. An enchanted waterfall. Fluorescent water tumbled violently, yet gracefully, from the cliff. The flow finally settled in the calm bed below.

As if following orders when young, he stepped across the soft, lush vegetation into the shallow water to explore. Coolness overtook his senses.

He lay down. His head rested on his paws. Moisture from the waterfall sprayed his body. Stillness evoked memories of his mother. Calmness lulled him to sleep.

Suddenly, a melody stirred him. Through blurred eyes, he woke to see white swans with long necks swimming nearby.

The Black Leopard watched with delight, captivated by their beauty. Then he frowned. Although wounded, natural instincts prevailed. Not having eaten in almost a week, his prey was too close to ignore.

With a quick swipe his massive paw, though weakened, captured one of the swans. He quickly devoured it, then quenched his thirst.

Satisfied, he hung his head low.

Although heartbroken over their loss, the swans didn't abandon him. They sensed the end was near. Their soft songs enveloped the waterfall as they swam in circles, celebrating.

The Black Leopard stretched lengthwise the oasis. It wouldn't be long.

After using the generative art program, Wombo Dream, for a few months, I love the art that it produces. I discovered that the software resembles another program I've utilized, Nvidia Gaugan. However, instead of brushstrokes to generate images, this program uses text prompts.

I like working with Wombo Dream. I can retrieve a distorted version of the image I visualize, such as landscapes, buildings, people, and animals.

In my current fractal art project, I utilized two different programs. The text inputs into Wombo Art captured my vision of a black leopard and birds together in a body of water. My pure fractal provided the ethereal scene near the waterfall.

The first program, Wombo Art, created the generative art pieces. Below are my steps in producing the black leopard and the swans. I chose a similar background so that hopefully the colors would match for blending.

The black leopard lying in the water. He has red in his mouth:

Text input:

"black leopard injured badly crying in water"

Result:

Several swans are lounging peacefully in the lake:

Text input:

"white swam"

Result:

Utilizing Canva, I was able to blend the two Wombo Dreams into one background. The black leopard would be at the center of the scene. The swans would anchor the scene on each side of the leopard.

To separate the two, I used a pure fractal I created in Apophysis 2.09 fractal rendering program. I was amazed how surreal the fractal looked as the lush grass on which The Black Leopard lay. The difficult part of the project was layering the fractals to resemble a bed of grass. It was time consuming to duplicate the fractals and place them correctly to achieve a natural look.

After completion of my project, below is the final version:

This is beautiful and I love the outcome...

I'm just trying to get my head around whether, as an artist, this is a pro or con. The software.

One part of my loves the tech and the fact that people who are a bit nervous to delve into making art get to just do it. And make art! :) And maybe gain more confidence to make more art!!!

And a part of me feels threatened that my skills will be less... well.. skillful, I guess :)

I am going to send this to someone who loves art but is too scared to make it herself yet. And she's gonna be mesmerized by the possibilities for sure. 💥

Hello. Thanks for stopping by. When I first started creating fractals, I was extremely nervous not knowing how it worked. However, upon reading about fractals and how they were created and what their possibilities are, I love working with them. I know your friend will too.

Take care.

Thanks for the feedback.

I shared on FB and tagged her. I know she'll love it!

I'm going to definitely book mark it to play with as well :)

Keep on making art for us! :)

One area I have yet to venture into is colab notebooks. I see others publish articles and the resulting art. However, I can't locate and download the software.

Um... I've never heard of this?

But this sounds interesting?

You could ask them directly for sure. I mean... even the word "colab" speaks of a better way of us "being". Collaboration is the only way we're going to get anything right moving forward.

The antithesis of capitalism and the crazy competitiveness it encourages. And hence the separation of us humans.

Please do share and tag me in that story if you find it, test it and decide to share it?

I've got so much to learn here (multiple projects on the go and never enough time) it's best if we split forces / resources and share findings.

Faster. Quicker. Stronger! Together! 💥

Thank you so much for your compliment. I appreciate it. I love working with fractal art. The generative digital art is really nice. One day, I'll figure out the colab notebooks and other programs I see others use.

Appreciate your support. Take care.
