My First-Ever Visit To A Pig Farm

Hello everyone in the wonderful homesteading community. I hope you’re all doing well and enjoying the weather wherever you are. Welcome to my blog.

The weather over here for the past three days have been nice and cool, unlike four days ago (it was very sunny and I hated myself for going out that day).

In life, things don’t always go as you plan. Sometimes you have to face difficulty, but with the right attitudes; determination, hard work and consistency, you’ll definitely scale through. About 2 months ago, my school that has been on strike for 9 months resumed. It was so sudden that I had to rush down to my school the next day.

I had to leave my garden and farm in the hands of my cousins. We made a plan and they agreed to visit my farmland at least twice a week. I was so happy when they agreed. They did a good job for the first month, but about five days ago I called my mom to ask her about my garden, I was surprised when she said it is in a very bad state.

Apparently, my cousins forgot about my garden and focused on my farm. I don’t blame them, they also have a lot of things on their minds. Well, I called them and reminded them about my gardens and they promised to make everything right.

Due to school (lectures and all) I’ve not been able to do any homesteading activities for a while now. But yesterday, my friend and I visited a poultry farm close to my hostel (just a 10 minute walk). I didn’t know there was a poultry farm in my area, until my friend told me about it yesterday.

Have you ever thought of raising pigs? Do you like them? Or are you part of those that are scared of the stress of raising pigs?

The truth is, I’m one of those that are scared of raising pigs! I’m an experienced homesteader, and I’ve reared a lot of animals; chickens (local and broilers, birds, goats, rats, rabbits and some other ones), but I’ve never reared pigs! I’ve never even gotten so close to a pig until yesterday when I visited the poultry.

I know pigs are rewarding animals. They are very expensive over here. I don’t know much about them, but what I do know is that they are very stressful to rear. I don’t know if they are wild, I mean if they bite. But I’ve heard stories of pigs biting people's knees and hands (I don’t know if this is true or one of those superstition I believed as a kid).

When I got to the poultry, it wasn’t very fancy. Something you should know if you want to be an homesteader is that you don’t have to start big. You don’t have to make everything look fancy and all. Starting small is a very vital step to a successful life. As I said earlier, the poultry I visited wasn’t really fancy. The owner made use of local materials.

When I got there I was lucky enough to meet the owner, I politely asked if I could take some pictures. Although he was reluctant at first, after begging him, he allowed me to take some pictures.

The truth is, when I heard of a “a pig farm” I expected it to be a muddy and dirty place. But I was surprised with what I saw. The place was the complete opposite of what I imagined. It wasn’t so clean, but it was quite neat.

The pigs were looking very healthy, and I was luckily enough to click a picture of them mating.

The owner was in a hurry, so I didn’t get enough time to spend there. But he promised to tell me the next time I can come over to check things out.

Thanks for reading!

I have heard people saying pigs are also dangerous and one should be careful going near them. These pigs can run and I was surprised when I saw one some years back when I went to dispose of some waste somewhere. Those rearing pigs are trying because they are always so dirty.
