One Of The Numerous Benefits Of Palm Kernels | Making Brooms With Palm Kernel Fronds

Hello everyone in the wonderful homesteading community. I hope you’re all doing well and enjoying the weather wherever you are.

The weather over here is very nice, although it is a little bit sunny, it is the best time to be productive. The last time I visited my farm was 5 days ago, I checked on my maize and I was happy because they were very healthy and growing well. Ever since then I’ve not visited my farm nor my mini garden in my backyard. The truth is, I’ve been very busy doing a lot of other important things.

Well, today I decided it’s high time I checked on my farm. I visited my farm, and of course, the first plant I checked on was my maize. And I also cleared the weeds. The next plant I checked on was my palm kernels. For the ones that haven’t started fruiting, it was so nice to see that my palm kernels are also doing well.

Just when I was about to go back home (probably to sleep or watch a movie), an idea popped into my head. What if I did something interesting with my palm kernel leaves? The palm kernel is one of the most productive plants to grow. Besides the fact that it helps produce one of the best oils, that is mostly used for culinary purposes, the plant also offers other benefits; it is loaded with a lot of health benefits, it can also be used to feed animals and the leaves can be used to make brooms (locally made brooms).

Growing up, my cousins and I used to make brooms with coconut leaves. We had fun while doing it and we also saw it as a productive thing. After making it, our parents would buy it and even pay us extra for our efforts. It also made us happy because it meant we wouldn’t have to buy brooms.

We also made brooms with palm kernel leaves and they turned out perfect as well.

Going through the memory lane, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to try it again, maybe one last time.

Materials needed

Here’s a list of the materials you’ll need to make the broom

cutlass; to cut down the palm kernel fronds
Rope To tie your broom
Scissors, blade, or knife; most people use blades (well, all my cousins prefer using a blade) but I think the best one to use is a knife; it is faster and easier.

To make local brooms, the first thing to do is to cut down the palm kernel leaves (you can also use coconut leaves). You should cut as much as you want, well, depending on how many brooms you want to make. Just make sure you don’t cut down too many so you wouldn’t waste them.

After cutting down the fronds, I gathered them in a safe place because the day was getting dark and I had to go home. So, maybe tomorrow,(or whenever I have the strength) I’ll continue with it.

I’ll update you all about my progress in making brooms with palm kernel fronds.

Thanks for reading.

It's a nice work you did there, it reminds me when I was with my grandma that we used to go to the farmer to fetch the palm trees to make broom. Thanks for sharing and have a lovely day.
