Update On My Maize Farm

Hello everyone in the wonderful homesteading community. I hope you’re all doing well and enjoying the weather wherever you are. Once again, I'm glad to be able to share my homesteading experiences in this community.

The weather over here today is very nice. The last couple of days have been quite unfavorable. It poured heavily; especially on Monday, I had the intention of checking on my farm to see if I had one of two things to settle. Sadly , I was unable to even step out of my room and when I finally did in the evening, everywhere was muddy, so I went back inside to relax and do something else.

Everyone loves the rainy season, especially farmers. It is a season to plant different types of crops and enjoy the benefit of the weather. But sometimes, it becomes disadvantageous when it rains heavily. I’ve seen so many cases where crops got destroyed by heavy rainfall.

This morning, the weather was very nice, although it rained a little, but that didn’t stop me from doing what I wanted; visiting my farm. I should’ve done that a few days ago, but I’ve just been postponing due to some reasons (to tell the truth, I’ve been kinda lazy😂). When I got to my farm, I was very happy and impressed with what I saw. A few weeks ago, I posted an article on this community where I shared an update about my maize and how it looked 3 weeks after planting.

Maize is a very rewarding plant and is grown by a large percentage of farmers in Nigeria. My main aim in growing maize is not for commercial purposes, but to sustain my family. Maize can be boiled or roasted, it also serves as feed for the animals (maize cobs can also be used to produce feed for animals).

The rainy season is a perfect time to grow your plants. At first, I didn’t want to plant my maize because I felt it was too late (the end of the rainy season), but I’m very happy with the way things are going, and I’m glad I took the bold step to plant them.

Here are some of the pictures of how my maize looked about twenty-two days ago.

Here are some of the images of how they look now, about 7 weeks after planting.

Seeing these nice, big, and green leaves puts a smile on my face. It is so nice to see that all my hard work is starting to pay off, although I still have a lot of work to do, I’m positive that in the end, I’ll definitely yield a very good harvest.

One thing about the rainy season is that it is very good for plants as it makes them grow well, however weeds, just like the plants also grow faster and compete with the plants for nutrients, water, and sunlight. To avoid this, the best thing to do is to get rid of them. Maybe not today, but I’ll have to get rid of them manually soon.

Thanks for reading.
