πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ Just Another Day With Lots Of Rain And No Propane πŸ”₯

short.gif

A lack of cooking gas and dry firewood was what today brought us, but luckily Harry the lamb came by to cheer us up as usual.

Fire Is Mesmerizing πŸ‘€

1.JPG

Β  Β  Β We ran out of propane a few days ago, and once again it's a hard resource to find, but luckily we're no strangers to cooking on a fire when necessary. Fire is such a simple but meditative thing to let the eyes got lost in, and Monkey-B seems to get into the zone when tending the fire.

Let's Eat More Salad πŸ₯—

2.JPG

Β  Β  Β It's been raining on and off for days now, and pretty much all the firewood we have access to is soaking wet, so ultimately that means we just have to go on a salad diet until the weather improves. Well, luckily later in the day our neighbors allowed us to borrow their tank and cook a hot meal. With morale partially restored and tummies full, we all began doing our daily Hive-related responsibilities.

Partially Packed 🧳

3.JPG

Β  Β  Β We've got a couple of suitcases already weighed and ready for flight, and the sight of packed bags has this guy pretty excited. We are definitely not leaving Suriname the way we had hoped, but at this point we are just glad to leave, whether as a united family or not. The world seems to have gone bonkers, so the only we can do is roll with the punches and try to create the best life possible within all the red tape.

Panoramic Chef πŸ‘©β€πŸ³

IMG_4441.JPG

Β  Β  Β I kept my wife company in the chicken coop kitchen while she was frying some tofu, and for some reason realized I've never once used the panorama feature on my iPhone camera, so here it is, a shot wide enough to capture the walk back to our house and the walk to the main road. I definitely need to experiment with more panoramic shots in the future.

6.JPG

Β  Β  Β The chicken coop kitchen is far from ideal, and it's designed so that the smoke from the stove gets blown back in your face instead of evacuated from the building. This is just one of many reasons we prefer to cook on the ground next to apartment when there's no propane around.

Jurassic Park πŸ¦–

7.JPG

Β  Β  Β Although not a fan of baby dinosaurs, I decided to snap some pics of the animal life nearby. Ever since I learned that most dinosaurs probably had feathers and don't look like what my elementary school textbooks taught me, I have seen the T-Rex spirit alive in chickens, and now they are dinosaurs to me.

8.JPG

Β  Β  Β Slightly less dinosaur-like is the pigeon coop, and I honestly don't know its purpose. I assume the landlord eats pigeons because he doesn't interact with them like pets, but I'm not 100% sure. A pigeon seems a weird bird to eat because I associate they can be carriers of many different diseases.

Take The Camera For A Swim πŸ“·

10.JPG

Β  Β  Β With my creativity quickly disappearing, I decided to take a shot with the camera lens nearly in the water, and I liked the reflection it produced. I'm no photographer by any means, but I do like to play with angles and perspective sometimes.

11.JPG

Β  Β  Β One more nearly in the water shot to call it quits for today's piping hot Hive content. Honestly I am a bit distracted from Hive lately now that our departure date is so close. Thanks to all of you for being on this journey with us the last several years. We can't wait to soon share content from Cambodia, the place we feel must at home in the world.

Yes, bird are most closely related to dinosaurs, and I just image the wings as tiny T-rex arms, and all of a sudden the little chicks seem like godless killing machines 😁. Luckily they only inflict terror on worms and insects, but if they were 6 meters tall, they'd pluck humans off the streets and eat them.

I can't wait to see your Cambodia content. I'm enjoying your posts so far.

I didn't know pigeons carried diseases. Animals are supposed to be vaccinated anyway.

I hope he doesn't regret eating them if he does

I can't wait to share Cambodia with all of you, it's certainly an underserved Hive market. Pigeons carry all kinds of mites, worms, lice, and other things we don't want to contract. I used to think he killed them to use as dog food, but now we're pretty sure he eats them. Strange for such a wealthy person to eat something that is taboo for most poor people. πŸ‘ŠπŸ™

Seeing your post, I miss my hometown, the beautiful atmosphere, lots of livestock and cooking using firewood... this is like my life in the village.

Are you able to visit often? I know Indonesia has so many islands, so I realize some locations are very difficult and expensive to reach.

Yes, I am grateful that I can visit 2 times in 1 year, the access I take is land using a private car for approximately 12 hours of travel. It's very tiring, but I'm happy

Long journey, just like in the USA, everywhere is far. Indonesia is such a big country.

That's a very cute sheep.... You also have a flock of pigeons. I really like that. Looks like our place is both in the rainy season, yes, this sometimes hampers activities.

Yes, even the dry season is rainy here in the Amazon. Also, we are a 1,000 meters from the sea, so we get a lot of weather from that as well. Harry is the smartest lamb to ever live, he deserves his own show on Suriname television 😁.

I can relate a lot to Pov's cooking outside. When I was younger, we needed to cook in a dirty kitchen provided by my cousin when we ran out of kerosine (not butane) with charcoal..somehow, cooking with charcoal seemed to have the best result whenever we cooked rice in a clay pot. All dishes we're so tasteful.

I agree, charcoal is a much more pleasurable experience, less smoke. Funny you mention clay pots, they are still used in the Cambodian countryside, but Chinese aluminum is increasingly replacing things like this. There is nothing better than beans cooked in a clay pot, nom nom nom.

It’s very hard day!!! So much rain, no gas and all firewood are wet.

That sounds pretty miserable :( ... Is keeping some firewood inside an option?

There was some burnable wood along some of the roof edges, but it rained so much for so many days, the water percolated up through the wood like a sponge.

Lesson learned. Even though our place is small, we should've been doing this, even if just enough for one meal.

hello my friend @justinparke.
I have seen all the pictures that have been shared this time, the atmosphere looks cloudy, it's true where you are now it's rainy season, ooooyaa my friend, Harry seems to be eating banana peels, is that his favorite food,,,??????? ?

This is technically the dry season I think, but it's always rainy in the Amazon-arribean. We would've never guessed how much Harry would love banana peels, but absolutely no interest in the banana itself. Harry has refined tastes 🀡.

Why did you have to be away from home for so long??? From what I can tell, none of you really like Suriname.

We originally left Cambodia to get an internationally recognized legal marriage. Just before the pandemic arrived, we were screwed by Ecuadorian immigration lawyer and had to flee to avoid visa overstay. Suriname, Cuba and Haiti were the only nations open to a Cambodian-American family with no education, money, or sponsor. Before we could even collect ourselves and attempt marriage in Suriname, the pandemic hit, borders closed, and visa policies prevented us from going to the USA or returning to Cambodia as a united family. We've been stuck here ever since, almost three years now.

Yep, it's a strange new world, and I think I have already given up on the idea we can't be an international traveling family. We can barely transit airports, so I think we just have to come to terms that borders have become more sacred false gods than ever before. Thanks for the snacks and love, nom nom nom.

hahahaha.. the first thing that came to my mind when I saw the pigeons in a coop, "Why?". Then when I read about the landlord possibly eating them, that could make sense. Those dinosaurs sure look happy. They are chicks or adults with no feathers? Hahaha.. That ecstatic feeling of leaving survivor island. 3 years. I think this could really turn into an audio book. The adventures in Suriname , the ultimate guide to living without propane and how to survive without proper water supply. My comedic persona sometimes just takes over like Mr Jekyll and Dr Hyde. but it is Mr comedic and Dr boring.

Strange about the pigeons, but I've learned not judge others on these matters. Some people find pork to be one of the nastiest things to consume, and yet others love it more than any other meat. Those are chicks, but not so young anymore, just little T-Rexes. I wish we could've documented our time here better, but there wasn't much to see, and as things always go, I'll only be able to intelligently critical of Suriname after having been away from it for many months.

I do have some really fun ideas for video content once back in Cambodia, and perhaps even YouTube because that is the main way to reach a Cambodian-speaking audience. I'd love to do interviews with people in the Cambodian countryside, and talk about things like the secret to happiness and the meaning of life. More often than not, it's people like this who great insight into the human condition.

I like these more experimental camera angles and perspectives!
Exciting to see some packed bags. Your new future awaits, on the other side.

Couldn't help but notice that Harry has gone bananas.

P.S. Did I 'hear' the word dinos? ;>)

Thanks, I try my best even though I'm too lazy to formally study photography. For Monkey-B, all will crystallize when she eats her Indian vegetarian meal on the plane. At this point in life, there is nothing greater than eating chickpeas at 30,000ft.

Dinos, you got a good eye. Ever since I watched some documentary years ago that stated now paleontologists think most dinosaurs were feathered, and that chickens are more closely related to dinosaurs than crocodiles. Ever since then I see those little wings as T-Rex arms, and the way they walk around looking for purely instinctual kill, they are just baby T-Rexes to me.

I never thought to compare chicks with dinosaurs. hahahhaha. Counting the days to finally leave Suriname. By the way, I love your outdoor kitchen! Very traditional!

It's nice having access to an wood-burning stove when all else fails, but it's mostly used to prepare chickens for dog food, so as a vegan I'm not comfortable with the hygiene of the place, especially all the flies and nearby animal poop.

Soon we'll be back in Cambodia and cooking so many things we miss, thanks my friend.

Wow, you're a Vegan too. Nice Nice!!!! I've been Vegan for four years now.

You're in the Philippines right? I think that would be a hard country to be a vegan in, almost every dish I've ever seen has some kind of meat in it. In Cambodia it's the same problem, and that's why we decided to open a restaurant, because we were already in the kitchen all day, figured we might as monetize it.

Yeah. I'm in the Philippines. Honestly, some of the Filipino dishes can be easily be veganized. I've been Vegan for four years now and I must say it wasn't that difficult. But I did research and made sure that i'll be able to eat everyday.

That's a great idea. I'm actually thinking of making my own restaurant too. I would love people to have access in vegan food.

Same like Cambodian food, the dishes are easily veganized, but when going to a restaurant, it's almost impossible to get something vegan. I for one would love to see some veganized Filipino dishes, especially on Hive.

Firewood cooking are the best. I do using Firewood instead of charcoal to cook as well. No idea when I got addicted with Firewood cooking πŸ˜… but charcoal cook also nice as the aroma can't compete with gas cooked. Yeah one problem is during raining season and the wood gets wet πŸ₯²

I like firewood too, and in Cambodian we cook with a bit more gracefully with a proper stove and better ventilation. Charcoal is very affordable in Cambodia, and good for cooking urban areas when you don't want to make too much smoke for your neighbors. Funny that here in Suriname propane is cheaper than wood or charcoal, only $2.50 USD to change a big tank, but also very hard to find.

Sorry for the need to salading. The bright side is, getting out of here soon, so will just have to suck it up and grind through these few days.

Dinosaur heh 🀣 those chicks probably looking out and notice there's this huge dinosaur holding a rectangular thing and clicking.
