One-Man Party At The SuriBet Shop 🔊🚘 7 Days A Week

An almost daily occurrence on my walks to the Chinese mini market is a guy that sleeping on his car while playing his music on full blast.

First, A Snake Pit GIF 🐍

rainrain.gif

I recently posted about my Cuban neighbor who lives in the room on the other side of the multipurpose snake pit/sheep grazing grounds. He's been bitten by a venomous snake more than once that came from the patch of marsh in the above GIF. When I was relaxing on the porch today enjoying some herbs during the rainstorm, I decided why not capture it in GIF form.

1.JPG

On second thought, I've had an iPhone for several years, and for some reason I never think to use the panorama feature, so here's a panorama of the view from my porch. I've been making a point to try and learn more of my phone's features lately, and the camera is not a bad place to start.

You're Still My Little Girl 🤗

2.JPG

It seems not long ago I was lifting Srey-Yuu to put her on the back of my bicycle, which both her and Sakana both fit easily with room to spare. She's now a pre-teen, and she hates it more than anything when I call her that, so that's exactly what I do. We got a twisted sense of humor like that, and sometimes I have to snatch her up and remind her she'll always be my little girl, even if she is the size of my wife and still growing.

Daily Party At SuriBet 🥳

12.JPG

On my way back from the store I passed by the SuriBet shop, and I decided to snap photos of what is now a common site for me. Each day the same guy shows up in the morning, buys some beers from the shop on the right, some lottery or sports betting tickets from the shop on the left, and a roti from around the corner. Within 2 hours he's out of control, cat-calling ladies that pass by, propositioning people to dance with him, and all of this with all of his car doors open and speakers at full blast.

13.JPG

Eventually the guy passes out on the top of his station wagon after he's had his share of cat-callign and solo dancing in the parking lot. This kind of western ego stuff is what I find an escape from in Cambodian life. All in all the guy's harmless, but it's a sign of the strange social conditions in this country.

🕊️ Bird Path 🛁

14.JPG

After arriving back at the apartment, I noticed the pigeons having a good time in a puddle created by the afternoon rainstorm. I realize Harry the lamb made no cameos in this post, but I promise you there will be more Harry content on the way.

Wow I really enjoyed that bit of entertainment about a sleeping on car guy. What a strange town this is. Someone who has a car doesn't have a bed?

I love the photos of you and your preteen little girl haha.

I assume he probably has a decent place he could relax at, but I guess it's more fun to hang out at the corner shop and cat-call ladies while getting absolutely wasted. When I first arrived here before curfew, I attempted to hang out with people my age, and this consisted of standing outside the corner shop and chatting people that walked by. After an hour of this, I had enough of that experience to last a lifetime. It felt like being in highschool again where none of us have a place to go because we all live with our parents. Only difference here is that all of these guys had wives and children at home, and hanging out at the corner shop is a way to escape the family. Lucky me, I actually like hanging out with my family more than standing at the corner shop for hours on end.

Srey-Yuu is a handful these days, but she'll always be my little girl, and I'll keep reminding her of that until I break my back one day.

A great sight to be missed or not. Hahaha the patch of green.

It's not easy to get bitten by a venomous snake but your neighbour has gotten bitten a couple of times which to me is like hitting the jackpot. I think he gets the euphoric feeling of snake venom. Hehehe..

That guy who goes to Suribet everyday does that everyday? In broad day light? Hahaha.. if it was in Malaysia, he would be an overnight star on Facebook. I guess Malaysians are generally shy and doing something like that and having families know about it is pretty shameful. Wahahha... Hi hi..

Hahaha my wife also wanted to take picture of the carrying post with my nephew every few years. It gets harder every year. Then they grow up. Fast. Which is sometimes sad..

Our neighbor is probably on his way to venom immunity by now 💪. Yes, the guy at the bet shop does this starting at 9am, and it usually continues until at least 2 pm. You nailed it, in most SE Asian countries this behavior would be shameful, but nobody minds here. This is why we've never figure out how to live here. Everyone is seemingly free and home at all times, yet everyone manages to somehow own a house, car and have plenty of expensive things to eat. Local minimum wage is $100 a month, and yet we can barely survive on $1,000 USD a month here. But it's not like there is a section of the population poor like us, maybe a handful of people in every neighborhood. When I ask my one local friend that I trust how people can have so much by doing so little, he always says "cocaine and gold." Srey-Yuu is already entering the stage where everything her Dad does is extremely embarrassing.

I have a feeling the one man party guy is just as fun as me. I had same experience where my hangout buddy told me I went and sleep at the parking lot. Fortunately no one park on my spot.

On the side note, for panoramic shot nowadays, phone with wide angle is hard to capture a nice panorama photo, as the angle all being curved. I have some old photos documented back in 2018 when I was still using my old phone with only 13mpx single lens, but capture superb panoramic shot, compare to a twisting and bending ugly Pano shot of the current 64mpx quad lens phone camera.

I think you would be way more fun than the one-man party. Malaysians are mostly very polite and respectful, so I can just imagine Malaysian cat-calling would go something like "Hey girl, do you come from a good family?" or "Excuse me mam, how can I make your day less comfortable?" 😁

I see what you're saying about the panorama, the curvy thing plays tricks on the eyes, but I do look how it gives perspective.

Fresh air, the sounds on ground when walking on it and less crowded. And during at night millions of starts can be spotted with no lights pollution like the city does. This is a healthy lifestyle. Sometimes simple is more. How is him btw, I bet the trauma still with him until today 😅

I imagine I will see the one-man party later today, and I have to assume he either has an alcohol and gambling addiction or a home-life that he doesn't enjoy.

Sometimes do thinks that or worrying about him. We'll never feel / experience like he ever do 🥲

Funny me thinking it is you a one man party at suribet. 😁 I thought you were having a party being alone. Sorry for my kind of thinking upon reading the title.
But, as I continue reading the content. It is not you. 😁
It makes sense now the seven days a week. Because you are always with your family everyday. 🥰 And you only have few days left going back to USA. 🥰

Hoping that your Cuban neighbor won't be bitten by the snakes again. 🙏

I am also not using panorama of my phone. Maybe I gonna make it a try one of these days.

It's so sweet to be called always a little girl by a loving father. Srey-Yuu must feel proud of it. 😁😁❤️❤️

Then, the one man party is the next person on the scene that you are talking about in your title. 😁

Lastly, the pigeons makes your day even you arrived at the apartment without your family. For sure you are missing them already.

Take care and have a great day even alone. ❤️🙏

Funny how I already miss them and we aren't even separated yet. I guess cause I guess I've had this happen once before, and what was supposed to be three months apart turned into 6 months, also because of bureaucracy. I realize anything can happen, so I am not getting too excited for a return to Cambodia until I find myself in possession of a long-term visa once again.

Haha, it's amazing what I have to do get Srey-Yuu on camera, and luckly it's not me partying the days away at the grocery store 🎊.

That's the normal feeling when you know you will be separated too soon! I just hope everything goes smoothly for your residency in Cambodia.
Srey-Yuu is a teen now. Maybe she can feel shyness now. 😁
Gladly it is not your partying. For sure you are not a party goer. 😃

That guy! What a scene!

As you said, contrast is what life is all about. We need to experience what we don't like to know what we do like. You're going to enjoy the ( future ) contrast so very much. In fact, you'll probably be thinking back of this dude, in the future, with a smile on your face. What a story...

I think you are very right, we already have fun trying to explain to Cambodian family and friends on the phone about the weirdness of Suriname. Pov always remarks about how hardly anyone here works from home, or more accurately, in front of their home.

While walking down the street yesterday, I made her laugh by pretending there Cambodian mini shops all along the edge of the road on the walk to the corner shop. Just the thought of roadside coconuts and sugarcane juice made us feel giddy inside. I think there is a chapter of Hyper to be written in Cambodia one day 🤔.

Haha, it's good to keep daughters on their toes by reminding they will always be babies.
