🚐 The Mobile Minivan Market Strikes Back 🌽We Are Quickly Becoming VIP Customers 🀝

(Edited)

The Battambang minivan mobile market is back again, and this time we spent almost $25 stocking up vegetables, fruit, and tofu.

Just In The Nick Of Time βŒ›

Β  Β  Β It's been nearly two weeks since the mountaintop minivan market came to visit us. There are various hawkers and sellers occasionally passing by every day, but they are mostly selling things at higher than local market prices. For this reason we always try to hang tight and wait for the minivan from Battambang to serve our needs.

VAN.png

Β  Β  Β Battambang is a very agricultural part of Cambodia, with many fruit and vegetable farms in addition to plenty of rice fields. There is a long dirt road that connects us to this province, and this guy and his wife are able to make the several hours drive to us and undercut the prices of locals providing the same goods. They need the income more than the locals, and we need better prices to stretch our hard-earned modest income, so it's a match made in heaven.

Being Openly Sick Is Cool Again πŸ€’

@Srey-Yuu is still a bit sick, well we are on some level, but she is the best at outwardly expressing her sickness because she's a teenager 😁. Although she wasn't part of the shopping process, she got out of bed to come and stand in the middle of the humans, so yeah, suck it COVID-19, being normal sick is cool again. It's cool to see the attitude and COVID fears are basically gone here locally, and now it seems this season's local flu bug isn't creating any kind of panic or news, just some good old-fashioned sick like pre-COVID times.

Β  Β  Β To avoid repeating the style of the pics taken in a previous post about this minivan, I decided to climb on top of the retainer wall and take shots from different angles. Mey-Yii, our unofficial 5th family member, and Monkey-B were already above, so I thought I could coerce them into a photo together.

Retainer Wall Homies πŸ‘―β€β™€οΈ

SAK.png

Β  Β  Β Oddly enough these two wanted a photo together, kind of surprising because they have a love-hate relationship, and I never know when they're gonna be feeling some "I hate your face" vibes towards each other. Down below they are weighing up kilos and double-checking, triple-checking shopping lists, because a holiday is approaching, and it could be several weeks before they return.

Potatoes Finally πŸ₯”

SEDR.png

Β  Β  Β I've asked for potatoes on the last three visits, and this time they stocked up. It's the rainy season now, so potatoes are scarce and priced higher than normal, so it's hard for them to find profit margins. I told them I'd gladly pay a little more, so it's nice to see they took me for my word, and we snagged a couple kilos. Unfortunately the fruit was all gone and/or spoken for. We can't expect much, we are at the tail-end of this guy's roundtrip journey, lucky they have anything at all left when they reach us.

LITR.png

Β  Β  Β In the previous post about these folks, I translate the Korean text on the van and learned that this van had a former life transporting martial artists to martial arts school and tournaments, so hi-yah πŸ₯‹! Maybe some day the spirits of the past will enter my body and cause me to drop-kick a cucumber across the highway. Oh, extra tidbit of info, I asked the family what they do on the return trip, knowing surely they wouldn't simply drive back empty handed.

Β  Β  Β They buy up recycling scraps and transport them to a processing facility along the way, not earning much at all from that, but it's quick and easy, so why not hustle up a few extra bucks, right? Alright, that's all I got for now folks, to be continued.....

Yeaii.. this is the story I've been waiting for from your previous post. Because before you closed the story on the post, you wrote "Mey-Yii was shouting "the vegetable van is here!" I'm sure that you will definitely make another post separate from that post hehe πŸ˜„

25$ to buy vegetables, fruit and tofu. if i may know, how long will it take to spend that much stock, is it 1 week or 2 weeks? I read in your post, you mentioned that this minivan comes every 2 weeks to the area where you live. Is that true? But it feels so good to have a mobile minivan visit us and it feels like it's made easier because we don't have to bother going to the market to shop for kitchen needs. but does this minivan sell all the kitchen necessities such as chilies, tomatoes, onions, etc.? if there is, wow this minivan is very special πŸ‘

It's very funny to see srey-yuu in the photo, it can be seen from her face that she looks a little bit in pain. I pray that she recovers quickly. hahaha..the two good friends, Monkey-B and Mey-yii do you want to say that they are like Tom and Jerry, I hope not 🀣

Yes I think it's a very good idea, instead of going home with an empty minivan, at least buying trash and then taking it to a processing place for recycling is to the benefit of the minivan owner. it's a bit of an advantage, but fast and easy πŸ‘

What.. to be continued 😩

You're right, these two post are connected, and the events are only 10 minutes apart.

The minivan sells many things, but mostly only things that are in excess in the area where they live, allowing them to buy at wholesale prices. We never know what they will have, but we always have them bring 20 pieces of tofu every trip.

Srey-Yuu is feeling better a bit, but because she doesn't want to be forgotten, she got out of bed to see the action. Monkey-B and Mey-Yii have a love-hate relationship, but eventually they'll realize that they're best friends πŸ˜‰.

it is a very unique market and also very interesting because in the car it sells many things that we really need as staples and of course it is the same thing

Many people pass by on the highway selling various goods, but few sellers offer very good prices. This particular van is popular because of the bargains and variety they have.

This reminds me of the peak of mobile markets during the peak of the pandemic. Almost all of them are gone now since the government started lifting the restrictions.

At first, I thought she has been waiting for too long for the van to arrive. The story is different for the other two, I can see their genuine happiness. 😊

Btw, get well soon for the both of you. 😊

In Cambodia these mobile markets serve the remote countryside areas because many Cambodians are without motorbike, bicycle, or nearby markets. I love this convenience, all you have to do is hang out near the road for a week and you can fully equip a house with everything from a ceramic bean pot to a hardwood bed frame.

The van knows our village well, and he even has our phone number in case we don't hear him stop. Everyone is beginning to feel a bit better now, thanks.

That's good to hear. It's both a win-win situation for the villagers and the owners of the mobile market.

Btw, glad to hear you're feeling better now.

It is a very convenient service to have, and the day the van drives by is a happy one. Many people in the village are still a little sick, but it is the flu season here, the weather is starting to get cool here.

Oh yeah potatoes are pricey here too nowadays and because of that I never bought some but instead bought vegetables which is in season. Thanks to that van and you have a lot of vegetables now especially the potatoes you have requested.

We are similar, buy what is in season for the best price even if it may not be what we actually want to eat. We usually eat cassava because it's more common and affordable, but potatoes are so much tastier.

I should make a post one day about the various services offered from the highway. Knife sharpeners, fortune tellers, boiled corn, even wild honey salesmen, you never know what you'll see.

Oh, that's quite interesting! I would never have imagined such! πŸ˜†

For some reason, after finished reading this post, there's one extra item added to my Cambodia streung kach Airbnb checklist. Follow the empty Vege van back to their province 🀣

My wife has now taken the dirt road to Battambang from our former home (room) in Pramaoy, and she said it was very beautiful, not that bad of a road either. The road goes through Samloat, which is famous for being the place that communism first gained popular support in Cambodia. Several peasants fed up with government corruption killed a few soldiers, then the government backlash was very strong, causing 4,000 people to flee the area. This caused a lot of support for communist ideas, but unfortunately the attempt at communism here would end up much worse for the people than the corrupt government at that time.
