We Are Flying Soon ✈️ Tickets Booked 🎫 Goodbye Suriname

thumb.JPG

@sreypov and the @kidsisters finally have their tickets booked for a return to Cambodia, and I have a ticket for the USA.

We're Gonna Miss You Harry πŸ‘

1.JPG

Β  Β  Β The 23rd of November is the day Suriname's first three Cambodians will return to Cambodia, and I am elated to think we'll be out of here soon, although unfortunately not together in the beginning. I am trying to spend as much time as possible with Harry the lamb because I know I'll miss this innocent soul more than just about anything in this country.

Endless Boredom Nearly Over πŸ₯±

2.JPG

Β  Β  Β It has been hard keeping family morale up the last three years stranded abroad, and I feel as though I've aged 15 years during our time in Suriname. I will be glad to have this weight lifted from my shoulders, and I will be even more happy to see the @kidsisters playing with friends, going to school, and eating a more diverse and healthy diet. These are things that should be basic rights for children, but has felt like an out-of-reach privilege since we arrived in this country.

3.JPG

Β  Β  Β The @kidsisters are doing their best to stay entertained until departure, especially now that many of their belongings are now locked away in suitcases and awaiting the day of glorious departure. @faustofraser gifted Monkey-B a watercolors set for her recent birthday, and this has been the most used item in their bedroom for several days.

Bags Packed(-ish) 🧳

4.JPG

5.JPG

Β  Β  Β I want to make sure the family arrives safe and sound in Cambodia before I depart Suriname, so I am sticking around until the 27th of November. This will be enough time for @sreypov to reach the quarantine facility in Cambodia and notify me. Once I know they're back home and there is zero chance of them being sent back to Suriname, I will then catch my flight to the USA.

Β  Β  Β Our posting will likely become more scarce as we approach departure, but we will definitely be documenting this whole journey and sharing it with you Hivers. Apparently there is no longer such thing as a free piece of checked luggage, so we're doing our best to throw things not worth their weight to be flown to Cambodia. The last few days have seen a lot of packing and weighing bags until reaching the Goldilocks zone of 23kg.

Fried Tempeh And Forgotten Problems πŸ‘©β€πŸ³

7.JPG

Β  Β  Β In the midst of all this chaos we ran out of propane once again, and it seems nowhere to be found. We're no strangers to cooking on a fire, but it's been raining a lot lately and there is little dry firewood to be found. I would definitely rather spend my last days packing bags and doublechecking documents than collecting firewood to make sure the family has a hot meal.

Β  Β  Β It seems Suriname is determined to give us one last kick in the ass to assure we will never consider a return to this place. Sorry this isn't exactly the caliber of post I normally try and share with you all, but it's been two busy days without posting, and I just want to fill you all in with the latest news.

Thanks for the treats. It's been a long time coming, but I'll truly believe when the 4 of us are together again in Cambodia. It's a strange new world now, and with the new increased travel costs I'll likely only be able to fly every 5 to 6 years. For this reason I'll visit the USA and say bye to family members that may not be around for a future trip.

That's a good idea ❀️ Maybe they can come ser you sometime. Or maybe crypo will make you rich :) ...

It was my pleasure ❀️

I've had a longstanding offer for any friends and family to come to Cambodia and stay as long as desired, and still nobody has taken up my offer. I guess if we happen to get "rich" in crypto, I could fly once a year to the US, but it would still suck that I can't bring the family because visa/border bureaucracy.

Looks like it will be a great relief for your family to leave Suriname, but there are things you will miss Harry, and also we can no longer see Harry's latest developments in your posts

Harry has certainly become a big part of our Hive content here, and we will miss him dearly. But with that being said, there will be so many greater adventures in the future in Cambodia, and we'll be sharing them with you Hivers.

All the best sir. Yes you're right, I would be worrying about them as well. Our parents always told us / remind us - don't take stranger's things, don't help them look after bags / baggage at the airport and don't take anything the stranger gives. Even they tell you ( the kids) I'm your father's / mother's friend etc. Don't and No all the best sir πŸ‘πŸ» can't wait for you to get back home after all

Funny you mention that because I packed all the family luggage. I reminded them that at the airport they will be asked if they packed their own bags. I told her many times she's got to say yes to that question even if it's not technically true. I told her if she doesn't answer like this that she may be requested for a lengthy bag inspection. Thanks for the good wishes, soon we'll be back to a better way of life.

It is a relief, although there is a lot standing in our way that could go wrong. Considering the way things have gone the last three years, I'll believe it's all real when I'm hugging the fam in Cambodia again.

This is a great news buddy! Hopefully everything goes swimmingly and you will all be reunited ASAP. Not to dig into your personal life but why are you going to go to USA first? In order to get a visa to Cambo?

Give thanks πŸ™. Not a problem at all, glad to answer. Well, one of my life goals was to introduce my American family to my Cambodian family, and because none of my American friends or family would ever come to Cambodia, nor could we get tourist visas to the USA, and being stranded abroad, US immigration seemed like the only way out of this hot mess in Suriname.

Well, as you know our US immigration failed miserably for a myriad of reasons that would take years to rectify. Although we haven't informed our American family members, we've given up on US immigration, and are ready to settle in Cambodia, buy land, and make some moves that mean return to the USA every three years will be unlikely.

As my parents are getting old and it will probably be five years before I have ever have another chance to visit the USA, it seems I should strike while the iron is hot and make a visit. I hope it's not the last time I see either one of my parents, but I also need to be realistic.

Another part of the trip will be to buy some camping gear and other items that we will use on our future tuk-tuk adventures, all of which we will be sharing with you ASEAN Hivers. The visa to Cambo is (relatively) simple now, but must be done online, $1,000 USD COVID deposit on arrival at the airport, Forte traveler's insurance required, and a 7-day quarantine. That actually sounds like a nightmare, but compared to having no chance of getting in the last three years, this is a very doable process to have the peace and mind that comes with living in that part of the world.

The process of getting into Cambodia seems relatively straight forward and standard. Asking for a $1000 deposit isn't really that big of a deal provided that it actually IS a deposit and not theft. Hopefully this means that you are able to acquire a long-stay visa as well?

I feel you on the parents thing and can share your experience with no one coming to visit. I've lived in SEA for nearly 20 years and in that time I was lucky to have my mother visit one time and just 2 of my friends ever came in all that time even though they had a free tour guide as well as a free place to stay.

It is a big ask of Americans though since as you might recall all those years ago, we are not a people that get long periods of time off from work. I will likely visit USA for exactly the same reason of seeing the parents soon as well. But I am not going to do it until I am assured that I will be able to return afterwards.

I'm just happy that things are finally looking up for you!

Yeah, whatever is not spent on the quarantine goes back to your pocket, but now we've just heard news no quarantine is required for vaxxed folks. We're fortunately or unfortunately part of the vaxxed crowd, so even though my family's quarantine doesn't cost a dime, they are stoked to not face a 7-day quarantine on arrival.

Because the deposit will not be spent on a quarantine for me, I may not even need to fork it over, or perhaps I will get it all back. We're currently trying to get the details of this updated policy.

Sounds like we have a similar situation in regards to family and friends, regretful but understandable. If all works out it would be really cool to host you and Nadi on some Cambodian adventures. We've got experience with this sort of thing. I imagine she'd be pretty happy perched at the back there with the breeze blowing. Even better we're going to buy the longer Piaggio Ape which has sideways jump seats in the back instead of a small perch.

I'm elated imagining the escape. I'm sad about the separation. I'm elated that the kids will be home and safe. I'm sad that Harry will miss you. I'm elated that you will hug your parents. This is so exciting.

Even though it was rough and boring for the kids, it will add some amazing experience to their life that many kids will never get. You've done such a great job through these times. You and your family are heroes in my books. You have also worked hard on Hive. All of you. Congratulations.

Sending warm thoughts.

Yes, a trip to the USA is required now because honestly I feel done with the west, and even now I feel conflicted about how much money I spend supporting the USA and other western countries when I make these visits, and these countries don't need or want my money, and will use it to keep people like my family out.

Either way, I need to make this one visit to let everyone know that if they want to come see us in Cambodia, it will be exponentially easier for them to come to us than for us to come see them. If we make a few bungalows that are free for friends to come and stay anytime, I think we just might have a visitor someday.

I can honestly say though that without this three years of hardship, I would've never given Hive an honest chance. Because of this, we've become financially independent via the internet, and that's a dream I've always felt was out of reach for this uneducated farmboy. Give thanks to the power of Hive, and viva la Harry!!

Suriname doesn't sound like a hospitable place. I wonder what makes some countries friendly and others not.
Best wishes for your journey into the next stage of your life.

Even though there is much ethnic diversity here, there is no diversity in terms of foreigners from far-away countries living here, and there is almost zero international tourism. This situation breeds conditions not open to migrants for immigrants, and new ideas. If you're from here, you grow up with a tight family support network and have lots of other connections. But I am shocked that after three years here, we've only really made one friend, and a think that's a sign of the way of life here.

Every country that I've ever lived in, I accidentally made new friends every day from just going to the market and running daily errands, but not here in Suriname. I 've been in more fights and arguments here than friends I've made, a very new experience for me. However, Cambodia will be a return to the way of life we are used to, and most of all I look forward to Cambodian humor.

Your wishes are apprecialoved.

Well, to be fair Harry belongs to our landlord even though we spend more time with him. The landlord gave him the name "Harry," and Harry's Dad is "Djoko," but I have given Djoko a nickname, and that is "Gigantorballs." Thanks my friend.

It has been a long time coming, but we are thankful this hardship caused us to give crypto a chance, and now this crypto thing is actually able to put us into retirement upon arrival in Cambodia, and that is a huge change in lifestyle. Soon we'll be posting on Hive because we choose to and not because we need to. Give thanks my Venezuelan brother from another mother 😁.

Hi hi Justin.. sorry for the late comment.. been so busy.. with tons of things to deal with.. Great to hear that your family gets to finally leave Suriname.. Harry will be missed. His dribbling skills. Less than two weeks to go... An exciting time... is there a direct flight from Suriname to Cambodia or the flight transits somewhere first?

Looks like it will be via Amsterdam-Singapore, so the only part my family is worried about is Amsterdam. I have faith it'll work out, they have a long layover and their bags will be automatically forwarded. All they'll have to do is find the correct gate and present all documents. Counting the days....

Thank you, I am a bit worried to seem them fly without me, especially considering all the transit problems a Cambodian passport brings. This is why I'm staying behind for 3 days after they leave, so that I can be easy to reach until they are settled in Cambodia.
