Attempting to make a "Golden Rough" Slice

When I was a kid, one of my favourite chocolates was the Golden Rough. It was basically just chocolate and toasted coconut mixed together into a circle, solidified and wrapped in golden foil. Ta-da! The golden rough! I'm not even sure if they make them anymore; at least, I haven't seen any in shops for ages. 🤷‍♀

(Well, to clarify: I haven't seen the circle in shops for ages. There's a full sized block! But it ain't a Golden Rough unless it's a circle.)

The other day, I was making my partner's favourite chocolate slice (like grandma used to make) recipe for dessert for the hundredth time, when I thought to myself... this could be a lot more coconutty. And golden roughy. And amazing.

So, today, I decided to try and make a golden rough version of the chocolate slice! 😁

Ingredients 🍭

For the slice itself

  • 1 cup of Self Raising Flour
  • 2 heaped tablespoons of Cocoa Powder
  • 1/2 cup of Desiccated Coconut
  • 1 Egg
  • 1 teaspoon of Vanilla Essence
  • 1 cup of packed Brown Sugar
  • 125g of Salted Butter, melted

For the Golden Rough topping

  • 1 can of Condensed Milk, full fat
  • 1 cup of Icing Sugar
  • 1 cup of Desiccated Coconut
  • 1 heaped tablespoon of Cocoa Powder
  • a splash of Vanilla Essence
  • 40g of Salted Butter

Preheat your oven to 180 degrees Celsius and prepare a baking tray: that is, butter it up or line it with baking paper. However it is you prefer to bake. I just use butter, personally.

Mix together all of your "for the slice itself" ingredients. You don't need to gently combine this, or mix this-or-that in one at a time. Just throw the whole lot into a bowl and mix it together.

Then spread the mixture into your prepared baking tray until flat and even, smoothed out to all edges and corners.

Bake for 20 minutes, then retrieve from the oven. You don't need to allow it to cool or anything, that can wait for after the topping.

It's time to prepare the main gloriousness of this feast! The Golden Rough topping!

This part is just as easy. Throw all of the "golden rough topping" ingredients into a saucepan and stir over a low-to-medium heat until everything is combined nicely.

Once well-combined, pour this hot chocolatey coconutty mixture all over your slice.

Optional: sprinkle more desiccated coconut on top!

Now we allow it to cool. 😉 Let it sit on the counter for a little bit then pop it into the fridge to chill. The topping will set over the course of several hours, and once set you can slice it up and serve it. Nom nom nom.

Does it taste like how I remember the Ye Olde Golden Rough? Nope! It's a bit too sweet to be a golden rough. But, it's still delicious. I reckon if I toasted the coconut, and used a bit less icing sugar, it would've been spot on.

I'll try that next time, because I think it'll be fantastic!!

Until next time! 😊🎂

Haha 😅 I thought that shot was a nice touch!

It was so good! Gonna be even better when I try to make it again with toasted coconut instead!

Your description of the golden rough reminded me of Ferro rochers.
