Dying Light -- zombie smashing has never been so much fun!

Dying Light, released in 2015, had been on my Steam wishlist for quite some time. It was one of those games that looked interesting, looked like it could be a lot of fun, but was also one of those games that I didn't really want to spend money on unless it was 80% off during a sale.

And so, I left it on my wishlist... and lo! It was magically gifted to me just a couple of months ago. 😁

I'm playing this in co-op so, to be honest, I'm not really paying that much attention to the main campaign's story. I have got the basic gist of it though. I'm Kyle Crane, I'm undercover, working for some people who seem like arseholes, helping normal people survive amdist a zombie outbreak, and I, as Mr. Crane, appear to be suffering from moral dilemma after moral dilemma.

However...

There is something that's been bugging me.

On the Steam Store page for this game, it clearly says:

Will loyalty to your superiors prove stronger than the will to save the survivors? The choice is yours…

Suggesting that "choice" is an option in this game. From my perspective, at about 40% through the campaign, there is no choice in this game at all.

Despite that blatant false advertising to the likes of people like me who enjoy actually making choices in games and consider that a proper selling point, Dying Light is pretty damned fun.

And so... I'll conveniently forget that I was very rudely lied to.

The skill trees are fairly robust. You get experience based on what you're doing, so if you're mindlessly hacking zombies left, right and centre, you'll get more Power experience and thus points to put in the Power skill tree. If you're jumping from rooftop to car-top and vaulting over zombie heads and zip-zooming all over the place, you'll get more Agility experience. And, of course, there is the Survivor tree.

I think the skill trees are pretty well thought out and I personally can't wait til I reach level 24 in Agility so I can zip-zoom around without getting winded, ever.

I'm also enjoying that I can play this in both single-player mode and in cooperative. Had to, to quickly get these screenshots! Haha.

The cooperative is fantastic though. You can create little competitions to see who can find the most loot in a certain amount of time, who can kill the most zombies, who can kill this special zombie first, etc. And there are assorted challenges too. Which I think are also in single player mode, but playing in co-op and trying to beat the other person really gives some extra fun to it. 😆

Loot isn't shared either which is great! It's all individual loot so if there is a coffee container on a table, we can both grab it. Those three hundred zombies we just killed? We can both loot every single one of them and find our own things. Rescued a guy? He rewards us both!

The co-op is done wonderfully. Can't fault it at all.

The gameplay itself is amazing. I was a bit iffy about the parkour aspect of the game, but it's done so intuitively that I didn't struggle over it much at all once I got past the tutorial.

Run, jump, scale that wall, jump on that zombie's head, zoom, zoom, zoooooom! AND! Once you reach a certain level, you unlock a grappling hook which adds an entire new dimension of zip-zooming fun to the already-fun movement experience.

Love it.

I was just amused this corpse was still standing, haha!

All in all, this game is so much fun and I'm enjoying it immensely. Gameplay is wonderful, co-op is perfect, the vast array of weapons and modifications available is fantastic, night-time is freakin' frightening and I've shrieked many times...

I can totally see why it's rated overwhelmingly positive on Steam and why so many people rave over the game. I'm turning into one of them.

Dying Light 2 will be coming out soon, I can only hope that it's as brilliant as this one is. 😄

Until next time,

Thanks for stopping by! 🎮🙃

Looks pretty great. Is it open world or semi-open world like Tomb Raider or is it linear?

Open world is a bit of an iffy term, haha. Ask three different people what they consider 'open world' to be and you'll likely get three different answers.

I personally consider the game open world -- the map is a large, unrestricted city and you can access pretty much the entirety of it, but there are a couple of areas that require being unlocked via the story as you go through the campaign, including the second half of the city. 🙂 There are also plenty of side quests around as you explore, as well as random events involving other survivors and capturing air drops before an enemy faction can, all in the open world.

I think this is one of the best zombie games there is. When this game came out, first I watched the whole story on youtube, but, after that I played the game myself. I don't quite remember if the co-op was a feature back then, or I just wasn't interested in it, as well the customization screen.

It's definitely the best zombie game I've played in quite a while! 😄

I don't know what it used to be like but it's great at the moment, and the co-op is fantastic. And they're still updating it despite working on Dying Light 2!! There are weekend events and a new expansion was released just last month or so.

This is the best zombie game for me, more like, the one zombie game I liked and liked quite a lot. Roaming around the city and the countryside (following dlc) was absolutely fun! And you could get clever while killing them haha!

Did you farm the night hunters? Killing those vicious monsters at night is so terrifying and fun at the same time!

Hahaha, to be honest, we haven't been doing much at night at all because I'm too terrified of the volatiles! Every time we have a mission that involves night time stuff, I stick to the rooftops and let him do all the work, LOL!

Haven't gotten up to the countryside yet, but I do have the Following DLC. Looking forward to it!! 😁 Being out in the countryside sounds like a nice change.

Volatiles are even more dangerous in the countryside though! And with nothing to stop them, the virals become more of a nuisance than they already are! I died more by them than any other zombies!

Volatiles are not that hard to kill if you stick close to the base, once they are close, you jump back in and shoot with arrows to the head! They drop quickly then! :D

This looks fun. The best zombie game I ever played was Resident Evil 4 on the PS2. I liked it so much that I got (thank you, bittorrent) the PC HD version for it.

But stupid me got too attached to the PS2 controller so the PC version was not so great for me using the Xbox controller or mouse and keyboard. I had to find ways using the PS2 controller on the PC. Thankfully, it was not hard.

Resident Evil 4 was pretty fun!! I haven't played that in yeeeeeears. The PS2 was the last Playstation I actually had, haha. I've never upgraded since then.

If you want I could upload you the PC HD version by way of Google Drive download. I got it as a game repack version (trusted with no bugs). I will have to PM you the link though through Discord, Twitter, FB or email. Whatever you choose.
