[Let's Play] Baldur's Gate 3 — The Dark Urge Rises, part one

avatar

When Baldur's Gate 3 first released I was doing a story playthrough with the goody two-shoes character: Ellu'kha, wood elf ranger. When I reached the end of Act 2 and got into Act 3, I encountered a lot of bugs and glitches and laggggggg and I decided to take a small break from the game before continuing onward...

Well, 1000's of hotfixes later, here I am!

...with a new character instead. xD

The entire time I was playing Ellu'kha, I just wanted to be evil. I wanted to do all the bad, naughty, wicked things, be mean to people, and just be a nightmarish person in general. It looked like so much fun!

And so, I invite you to meet Myrae, drow sorceress of draconic ancestry... also known as The Dark Urge. 😈

I'm not going to be narrating a Story Playthrough like I was originally doing with Ellu'kha. Just sharing my gameplay as I play in the more conventional sense.

I plan on doing a few things differently, also, just to see what happens, what changes, etc. Not that I really know what happens in Act 3 apart from what I overheard from my partner's playthrough, but we'll see how it goes!

My first major Dark Urge led to the demise of Gale, and it was freakin' hilarious. 🤣 "Could you lend a hand?" he asks through the portal whilst my character goes in to maim and munch it.

I don't think Gale will be joining my group of adventurers anymore, and I'm left wondering if there'll be something I can do with his severed hand later. Or maybe I could give it to Withers to resurrect Gale and see if there's interesting dialogue. DECISIONS.

When it came to the tieflings in the druid grove... I ended up doing a lot of Google-Research.

See, there's a few things that can happen in regards to the druid grove. You can side with the druids and convince the tieflings to leave, or kill the tieflings, orrr you can side with the tieflings and kill all the druids.

But, there's also the issue of the goblin camp. Minthara, one of the Chosen leaders of the camp, wants to find the druid grove and kill everyone there. She's the "evil" companion.

What I would like to do is let the tieflings live so I can encounter them later on in the story. Kill the druids because they're arseholes and, well, my Dark Urge has the urge to kill them. And I'd like to get Minthara as a companion without destroying the remainder of the druid grove, because, obviously, I want the tieflings to live.

image.png

Finally I discovered this Reddit thread which the OP kindly edited to claim they had done what I want to do. Although, they didn't really give specifics on how they did it.

So, hopefully I can do this properly. I mean, I suppose I could just help the tieflings the more conventional way... but my Dark Urge has an urge. 😜

So, what I'm going to do is: help the tieflings by dealing with the leaders of the goblin camp, except Minthara. I'll be able to get her as a companion at the end of Act 2. Have the party and celebration with the tieflings. Then, after they start their journey to Baldur's Gate, I'll just kill the druids. Because I can.

That should work!

At camp that night, after working out how I could save the tieflings and still be somewhat evil about it yet before actually doing anything about it... the little lady killed one of them anyway. HAHA! I haven't really read any spoilers or anything about the Dark Urge storyline, so this was very unexpected to me.

When the tiefling came to my camp and wanted to join me, I thought that maybe my first character had just missed an event. Nope. This was an event for the Dark Urge. And what an event it was! Waking up covered in blood, leering over the mangled, disembowelled corpse. Just fantastic.

After poisoning the booze of partying goblins and killing most of them in one fell swoop, I paraded into the temple where the goblin leaders resided and waltzed straight to the man who fetishises pain.

On my last character I inched away from him very carefully and fled, but this time my character embraced the pain of his Goddess and yelled at him to hit her harder while Astarion watched with interest. Was great!

I rescued Halsin from the prisons, killed the goblin Priestess, and now I need to kill the second leader... while not aggro'ing Minthara.

image.png

Unfortunately, I didn't succeed in my endeavour.

Minthara had to die.

I mean, I could've reloaded and just sided with the goblins, but I want the tieflings simply because they have a fair chunk of content. But I also wanted Minthara. Alas. I couldn't maneuver it how I wanted it.

At least I can roleplay that I helped for my own nefarious reasons and I'm going to do what I can to make their lives hell. Heh. I'll just have to side with the goblins another time.

Anyway - I'm enjoying my Dark Urge so far! I'm three quarters of the way through Act 1 and there have been many different dialogues, events, and interesting tidbits, and it also helps she's a drow... turns out there's a lot of extra opportunities for drow characters! 😁

I will write up a bit more of my Dark Urge Experience as I progress further! 😈

Until next time! ✨⚔️

This game is very good looking. It seems more immersive than Divinity

It's a beautiful game! And it's very immersive.

I didn't really get into Divinity: Original Sin... the first one, I tried to play by myself and it felt weird controlling two characters who spoke back and forth and choosing the dialogue options for both. It definitely felt like it was more of a co-op game. And Original Sin 2 - I played that with my partner, but that one felt more like a single player game! He initiated all the conversations and because of that none of the NPCs knew who my character was. I'll need to try them both again.

I can't wait to play Baldur for this reason.

A great coop game is 'it takes two'. Pretty funny too

I'm excited to hear about your new playthrough with Myrae, the Dark Urge! It sounds like you're having a lot of fun being evil, and I'm curious to see what you get up to in Act 3.

it's great that you're trying to do things differently this time around. It's always interesting to see how different choices can affect the story and gameplay.

It's definitely fun being evil in this game!~ 😄 In most games I hate being evil and I feel really bad about it... but in this, it's just so much fun.

Apparently Baldur's Gate 3 has a whole swathe of different endings based on various choices you make. I'm going to have to do several playthroughs to discover them!
