"Wilderness" ~ a five-minute freewrite

"Amidst the wilderness there are many creatures known to creep within the shadows. They lurk behind every tree, every boulder, and will stalk those who pass within the great depths. That, my boy, is why you will follow the fairy-lit trail."

The boy glanced down at his feet and shuffled his toes in the dirt, not wanting to meet the intense gaze of the bearded man.

"The eternal fires of the fairy-lights are tended to by the tiny folk themselves and will never grow dim; they are the sole defence against the beasts behind the shadows. For as long as one stays on the fairy-lit path, that one will be safe. Only those friendly to both man and fae will tread within the lights."

The boy bit his lip and moved to speak but the old man silenced him with a great stomp of his boot.

"Listen, boy, for I am not finished. There are more than beasts in the wilderness; there is another creature that lives deep within the deepest of wilds, and this one can tread beside the fairy-lit path... although not within the light itself. A dark fairy witch as black as the night with a heart even darker."

"Sir, I--"

"I am not finished," the old man snapped. "Beware the song of the fairy witch, for she will sing the gentlest of tunes to entice your upcoming death and doom. You will close your ears to her, or you will perish as those before you."

The boy looked up at the old man, then quickly stared back down at his feet.

"Yes, sir," he whispered. "I-I think I'm ready."

The old man laughed, a gruff, crackling laugh that sounded as someone scraping the dead bark off a tree.

"No, you are not."

Hellooo!

It's day 1549 of @mariannewest's five-minute #freewrite challenge, and the prompt for today is ~ wilderness.

You can find today's challenge -- AND JOIN IN!!!!!! 😃 -- by going to @mariannewest's profile and looking for the latest prompt. There are many other prompts there too if you don't want to do today's one.

It's easy peasy. Choose a prompt, set a timer for 5-minutes, and write, write, write whatever you can! You can edit it, enlargen it, make it a full-sized story if you want. Perhaps a poem. Fiction. Reality. Perhaps a snippet of your own life. Share it in its mind-flowy nonsensical glory. It doesn't matter! All is accepted! Mine was scrabbled together in 5 minutes, then expanded upon over another 15 or so. Anything goes.

Thank you for stopping by and having a read. 😊❤️

Until next time! 📚

Thank you! 🙂😊 Fantasy fiction writing is something I've been doing for 12 years now. I've published a couple of books and I'm trying to get back into the zone~ to publish my next couple. Freewriting usually helps! But I still need to kick myself to get back to my proper projects. 😅

Oh dear.
Another great story. You have freewriting a fully formed short story DOWN.

For this one, the old man's dialogue was the 5 minute freewrite, then after the beep I just added the boy's bits and pieces in what looked like good spots so it seemed more of a story and not just a giant wall of speech. 😅

Great technique! I gotta try that sometime. I wonder how many of the freewrites I abandon could be fixed by doing that.
