Walk with me through the medieval town Arnsberg

Hello all,
I take you today to my #WednesdayWalk initiated and hosted by @tattoodjay.
My walk takes you through Arnsberg in the Sauerland in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Characteristic for Arnsberg are its half-timbered houses, winding streets and its beautiful location surrounded by hills.
Walking through the old town, it is always slightly uphill towards the ruins of the electoral castle of Arnsberg.
We visited Arnsberg last Sunday and
we parked in the old town parking garage, from which we could start directly with our walk through the medieval old town.

Hallo zusammen,

Sauerland Museum

This building houses the Sauerland Museum, which focuses on the history of the Duchy of Westphalia in its permanent exhibition.

Modern-looking signage shows us the way to Arnsberg's various cultural highlights. So a good orientation is ensured ;)

Old Town Hall / Altes Rathaus

Always slightly uphill in the direction of the castle ruins, we pass the Old Town Hall of Arnsberg. This is located at the Old Market below the bell tower.

The Madonna

At the left corner of the building, in a latticed niche, you will see a Madonna, supposedly created by an unknown Swabian master around 1500.

Old Market / Alter Markt

Here again the perspective on the Old Market. Here are some small hotels and restaurants and a very cozy atmosphere emanates from him. I can imagine life happening here in the summer.

IMG_20221031_081852-min.jpg

The Krim / Zur Krim:

The KRIM was allegedly once the seat of the witch judge. After the building burned down in 1709, it was rebuilt and was then first the residence of Electoral Court Councillors and then a restaurant.
The name "Zur Krim" originated during the Crimean War 1853 - 1856, where enthusiastic patriots stated the following saying: "Der Russen Krim erlag dem Sturm, fest steht die Krim am Glockenturm" (Arnsberger Heimamtbund 1978).
In any case, with its red diamonds on the shutters, it is a striking and interesting building.

IMG_20221031_082152-min.jpg

Old Bakery House / Altes Backhaus:

The old bakery house is home to a small hotel and a restaurant with a rustic beer garden. It is located directly under the bell tower and is therefore the perfect starting point to explore the old town of Arnsberg.

IMG_20221031_082524-min.jpg

The Belltower / Der Glockenturm

The bell tower is considered the landmark of Arnsberg. Originally it was a gate tower and protected the town. It has been burned down and rebuilt twice and nowadays serves as a steeple for the church, which was also rebuilt.

IMG_20221031_082618-min.jpg

Now we continued towards the ruins of Arnsberg Castle. At the beginning of the short climb is this small replica of the former castle. Children can even walk through it.
So you get in advance a good impression of how the castle probably once looked.
The castle was built by the Count of Werl/Arnsberg around 1102 and was finally set on fire and destroyed in 1762 during the 7-year war.

IMG_20221031_083122-min.jpg

This door, labeled BRUNO, is the entrance to an air raid shelter where Arnsberg residents took refuge during World War II.

IMG_20221031_082751-min.jpg

IMG_20221031_082825-min.jpg

At the top you will be rewarded with a beautiful view over the valley and the city of Arnsberg.

Now we went downhill again through the old town. Dusk has already fallen, which gave the historic city once again a completely different aura. It feels like a little trip through the past and you imagined how people probably lived here at that time.
From the small quaint inns sounded the voices of the people to the street and enlivened the alleys.

Some interesting architecture there! I love the look of the wooden arches, and also the old bakery house is quite interesting.
Walks like this in places that hold so much history, enriches you and gives you a certain kind of charm.
Lovely photos of that town:)

Interesting place, you're lucky there not much people around. Seems you have "booked" the place for yourself. :)

Whenever I visit heritage sites and old places, the people long gone always come into my mind. I ask myself, how does their life go, what did they feel, what are their dreams, and others.

If our time is done on this world, too, who will build new architectures in places we lived and visit, who will come by and visit our place too... So many thoughts, lol!

I think the reason that so few people were there was, that we visited the city only in the evening. Probably all were there already for dinner ;)

Yes, I have these thoughts too! Our son is also very interested in history and so we always go on a little time travel when we imagine the past in different places ;)

Yes, sometimes I am surprised myself about some places that we explore ;)
If you like castles, you can definitely discover some of them in Germany.

Yeah I heard about that! But somehow when I'm in Germany it's only for the good highway rushing to Austria or Italy. I should definitely make a few stops next time.

The city is beautiful, it is on the top of a high mountain, but if we are determined to walk a long way, it will make our health strong and the variety of flowers near the mountain is really beautiful, I like it.

The flower meadow right next to the entrance to the ruin overlooking the valley looked really beautiful.
