Surprising church from Evora, Portugal (8 pics)
The construction of Sao Francisco church began in the 15th century in the Gothic style and in the 16th century.
It is distinguished by the arcades in front of the church formed by 7 arches of different shapes, a typical mixture of Gothic and Moorish elements.
You are in for a three in one that will appeal to many!
From the outside, it looks quite simple despite the large entrance.
When entering, we realize how huge it is and how it contrasts with the all white exterior.
On the side, there are 12 different chapel that are worth admiring.
Here is just a glimpse.
After the church, take a look at a fun Christmas crib museum that allows us to see different representations of the classic.
Some more humorous, some really original, some more artistic, some really weird.
After the museum, do not miss the Chapel of Bones.
It was built in the 17th century and all the beams and walls are entirely covered with bones.
The Capela dos Ossos was set up by Franciscan monks by disinterring bones from people buried in medieval cemeteries from Évora.
Legend has it that the bones came from fallen soldiers or plague victims, but this was later denied, it is only from ordinary people.
A count has been made and it is estimated that around 5000 corpses are exhibited in the chapel.
All methodically well placed.
