Paula... A personal, painful and infinitely beautiful novel [ESP-ENG]

Hello hello, my dearest Hive friends. How did the weekend rain treat you, here in Caracas there were two days of intermittent showers, even as I write, the rain falls every 10 minutes, the sun comes out and then comes back with more force. I feel it's a personal affront that doesn't let me dry my clothes at ease.

Well, but that's not the subject of this post. Today I want to write about something I've been wanting to do since I started writing in this community of super cool people. I bring you my first literary review, and it's with a book I finished reading just yesterday, Paula by the renowned writer Isabel Allende.

Who hasn't heard of this multi-award winning Chilean author? And if you haven't heard of her... you're already late () This author has at least 18 books published, most of them true bestsellers. The intimate but clear way this author has to take us by the hand to worlds never thought of, within the everyday life, is a real delight for those who love to escape with good stories.

I am not going to expand with information about this exceptional writer, I will only tell you that, if you do not know her work in depth, believe me you will not regret reading any of her novels.

Paula

Paula Alejandra Frías Allende is the name of the woman who inspires the sixth novel by the acclaimed writer, and she is none other than her own daughter. Many may say "Aha, if I don't know the author, how could I be interested in something she writes about her daughter?" Well, this book is about Paula's life and death from a strange disease known as porphyria.

I think this book is perfect to begin to know the author, because in this novel Allende herself is putting together the story of her family from her Basque origins, her contact with the spirits and the world of the invisible, the harsh and brutal of the Chilean dictatorship at the hands of Pinochet, the exile, the world of a woman trying to find her way groping, the bonds of love that are formed over the years, betrayals and love.

I was personally impressed by the sincere and not at all modest way in which she recounts the saddest and most difficult episodes of her life, such as adultery and her early sexual initiation.

But without a doubt, what touched me the most was the way in which she tells of her despair at seeing her daughter in a coma from which there would be no return. As it is the mothers who have the hard role of being caregivers, administrators and support at a time when fear and anguish gnaw at their insides.

This novel, traps us by the curiosity to know more details, since the fatal outcome we already know in advance with just a little search on the internet.

Paula dies at the age of 28 due to the complications of the disease, but for those who have been accompanying a loved one before the end, it is immensely difficult to try to explain how one has that certainty that they are accompanying their loved one, waiting for death, and as on many occasions, it is the best and most benevolent option.

Isabel Allende's wonderful prose gives form and voice to all those feelings that are almost always impossible to externalize.

Relatos de una realidad que no parece cambiar Stories of a reality that does not seem to change

One of the parts that most caught my attention was how the author described with absolute precision what it is like to live under a military dictatorship.

I felt totally identified, since it is no secret to anyone the things we have lived through in Venezuela for the last 22 years.....

But I was also struck by how she describes her experience as an immigrant in my country. It is interesting to read it because we have always been proud of being friendly people, with open doors, always ready to help (a belief I still hold), but sometimes it is hard to swallow when someone says that it is not true, that at that time we were also bad hosts to those who came fleeing hunger and death.

And it is true, before as now, there were bad people, people who hid behind good manners to deny jobs or help to those who needed it most.

Seeing my country told from the outside was very interesting, and made me reflect a lot about what our history has been and what could be our destiny when the winds change (I have no proof, but no doubts that we will get out of this).

Frases para recordar - Phrases to remember

I would like to end this post by quoting some of the most beautiful lines that caught my attention, encouraging you to give yourself the opportunity to read a fantastic book that will surely encourage you to read more of Isabel Allende's magical universe.

"Houses need births and deaths to become homes."

"What's on the other side of life? Is it just silent night and darkness? What's left when there are no desires, no memories, no hopes? What's in death? If I could remain still, without speaking, without thinking, without pleading, crying, remembering or hoping, if I could sink into the most complete silence, maybe then, I could hear you daughter"

"Silence before birth, silence after death, life is pure noise between two unfathomable silences."

"You are all that and also the samurai who now fights death"

"Birth and death are made of the same material"

"I am Paula and I am also myself, I am nothing and everything else in this life and in other lives, immortal"

I bid you farewell until another post ✌️ Peace.

Saludos y bendiciones.

Wow, this sounds like a wonderful book. I always enjoy reading books that tell personal tales.

I googled the disease Paula's daughter had and it sounds awful.

This would be such an interesting piece to read.

Thank you for sharing

Yes, porphyria is terrible, and even more so for the caregiver who has to watch their loved one fade away into nothingness.... I assure you that you will not regret it, it is an excellent book. Thanks for reading my post 😊🙏

Isabel's ability to make us live each experience she exposes in words, I only feel is comparable to that of the GABO, it is as if it were a very Latin way of transmitting stories and feelings.
In Paula there is a lot about Venezuela.
I just read for the second time, El Zorro, by her and I recommend it to you with my soul.

Dear @kat-nee, we need your help!

The Hivebuzz proposal already got important support from the community. However, it lost its funding a few days ago when the HBD stabilizer proposal rose above it.

May we ask you to support it so our team can continue its work?
You can do it on Peakd, Ecency, Hive.blog or using HiveSigner.

All votes are helpful and yours will be much appreciated.
Thank you!
