Is Pinterest still relevant in 2024?

One of my cooperators asked me the other day "Why don't you upload anything to Pinterest anymore?". And I started wondering: "Is there really a reason to do so?"

A few days passed, and I thought I should research the subject and see if Pinterest is still relevant. I know that I do not use it. But who does, and how can it be useful to a business or to an individual?

First of all, let's dive in the statistics of it!

What is Pinterest?
I asked Bing Chat and this is what it responded

Pinterest is a visual discovery engine for finding ideas like recipes, home and style inspiration, and more. You can save and organize images of anything you find interesting on the internet using images and, on a smaller scale, animated GIFs and videos, in the form of pinboards. You can also follow other users who share your interests and interact with them by liking and commenting on their pins.

To use Pinterest, you need to create a free account and then start exploring. You can browse through different categories of pins, such as food, fashion, travel, DIY, etc. or search for specific topics. When you find a pin you like, you can save it to one of your boards, which are collections of pins related to a theme or a project. You can also click on a pin to visit the original website where it came from and learn more about it.

In short, you can create and organized boards with a specific subject and use it to show what you buy, create, read etc. This, alone, creates a lot of possibilities!
An entrepreneur can create boards with digital products, or anything that they want to sell - an affiliate marketer can create boards of products creating affiliate links, etc etc.. I can think of a few different ways to use it :)

We are in 2024, how many years is it since Pinterest was created and most importantly - does it still have enough traffic? Does it have competitors?

According to Wikipedia, Pinterest launched as a closed beta in March 2010.
Today, 14 years after its launch - Pinterest welcomes more than 1 B visitors to its website per month!

According to Statista, 38% of its traffic comes from the United States and it is followed by Brazil.

Checking the same statistics (for the past 3 months) from similar web, I can confirm that the top traffic comes from the US

Something important is the social sources leading to the platform, and these are:

Checking our some of its statistics, I can't hide my excitement because I saw that it is growing. This means that taking some time into creating a cool account with some content may be a good thing at this point.

Pinterest Competitors

What about its competitors? Who are they?

When I asked bing about its competitors, it presented tiktok, instagram, facebook, dribble etc. But they do not do exactly what Pinterest does. So I will assume for now that there are no direct competitors, offering exactly what Pinterest does.

But where it got more interesting as I continued my research, was when I asked..
Are there any web3-decentralized Pinterest competitors?

And I did find some results!

Web3 or decentralized applications are those that run on a peer-to-peer network of computers, without relying on a central authority or intermediary. They often use blockchain technology to ensure security, transparency, and immutability.

Pinata: A decentralized platform that lets users store, manage, and share files on the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS), a distributed network that aims to create a more open and resilient web.

  • Everest: A decentralized registry of projects, organizations, and protocols in the web3 ecosystem. Users can browse and explore different categories, such as DeFi, NFTs, DAOs, etc., and discover new and innovative initiatives.
  • Mural: A decentralized platform that enables users to create, collect, and trade digital art on the blockchain. Users can upload and mint their own artworks as non-fungible tokens (NFTs), which are unique and scarce digital assets that represent ownership and provenance.

Please note

I visited one of my older accounts and I saw that now we should add our birthdate in the platform.

Final Words

Apparently Pinterest is a platform that may be overlooked, however it is being widely used (and mostly in the US) and thus, it could offer more opportunities for extra visibility and for showcasing services/links/products.

It is worth it to create a strategy, and also to take a look at its competitors in the Web3 space.

Do you use Pinterest?
Would you think of using it now that you have read this post?

Thank you for stopping by!

Hi,

Thank you for putting this under my attention :-)
A few months ago, someone suggested me to use Pinterest for making a visual board.
I experience a few issues with company's who's mining and selling data. Still the majority seems to find it 'ok'.

Besides that.. why do I need Pinterest? I find it difficult to find images or visuals that fit my idea. Sure I can be creative, but I don´t need Pinterest for that.

So I am glad you brought up some Web3 alternatives. Thank you for that!
I'll have a look into those :-) Feels a bit more 'free'

thank you!
🙏

Interesting!
I never used it, it just sometimes comes up when I am searching for pictures. Difficult to evaluate. I probably stick with Hive, as for me this is fitting best. But for an influencer or photographer, this might be helpful to increase visibility.

Thank you for dropping by!
Imagine creating boards based on the subject and linking to hive-front ends :) (i.e. inleo.io that also pays ad revenue based on views etc)
This can be done with all communities, but maybe it makes more sense with photography, diy, games, videos etc
It is all about the individual needs of somebody.

I have used Pinterest in the past though with little success. And indeed it offers something that other social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, etc do not, especially in terms of achieving more visibility. Because of your writeup maybe I will give it a try once more and see how it works out, though I would prefer it's web3 versions. Thanks for writing and have a great day.

I don't think I'll be using Pinterest - not because of your description - but because I am simplifying my online presence. It might not look like it right now - things have to get more complicated before they get simpler.

I used Pinterest in the past to share my blog posts and more importantly, the FBA workshops I ran worldwide. Before IG came to surface, Pinterest was the place to go for creative souls. It still is for certain communities such as gardening, baking & cooking, photography etc.

Funny you should ask that question. I was on Pinterest yesterday for the first time for ages. It used to be my favourite social media platform until it got taken over by ads.

I've recently started posting here again, recording my progress in #the100dayproject and was wondering if it was worth pinning my posts on Pinterest which is why I went to visit. I tend to use YouTube for creative ideas now rather than Pinterest.

If I remember, l'll probably pin them there since it's pretty easy byt I'm struggling a bit to get my the images to upload properly on Hive.
