A Hungarian-style big potato pancake from the Ząbkowski milk bar. Time stopped here several dozen years ago / Placek po węgiersku z klimatycznego baru mlecznego

Sometimes it is enough to go to another district of the city to go back several dozen years in time. I experienced it yesterday when I went to Praga North district. At one point I got hungry and decided to eat something in some local restaurant.

Czasem wystarczy pojechać do innej dzielnicy miasta, żeby cofnąć się w czasie o kilkadziesiąt lat. Doświadczyłam tego wczoraj, gdy pojechałam na Pragę Północ. W pewnym momencie zrobiłam się głodna i postanowiłam coś zjeść.

I chose the Ząbkowski milk bar. I was there once, I bought dumplings and I liked it. I remembered it was a very special place and I felt it on my own skin, right after entering the bar.

Wybrałam bar mleczny Ząbkowski. Byłam tam kiedyś na pierogach i mi smakowały. Pamiętałam, że to bardzo specyficzne miejsce i odczułam to na własnej skórze, tuż po wejściu do baru.

I was greeted by a slightly creepy mannequin showing a milk bar worker from the communist era. Modernized with a visor 😉 The old dishes looked terrible, including a tin bowl and cutlery attached to the table with a metal chain. This is a parody of the milk bars from the famous comedy "Teddy Bear" (in polish: "Miś"), in which the approach to the customers of milk bars was presented in this way 😉 Fortunately, in such bars, meals were actually served on ordinary dishes.

Przywitał mnie taki nieco creepy manekin przedstawiający pracownicę baru mlecznego z czasów PRLu. Uwspółcześnioną o przyłbicę 😉 Strasznie wyglądały stare naczynia, w tym blaszana miska i sztućce przyczepione do stołu za pomocą metalowego łańcucha. To parodia barów mlecznych ze słynnej komedii "Miś" w której w ten sposób przedstawiono podejście do klientów barów mlecznych 😉 Na szczęście w rzeczywistości w takich barach serwowano posiłki na zwyczajnych naczyniach.

This was the menu (in polish - Jadłospis). I was supposed to order dumplings. I used to like dumplings from this bar, but I saw that one of the clients eats an interesting dish and thanks to this inspiration I chose a huge Hungarian potatao pancake. If you remember my posts from other milk bars in Warsaw - for example Mokotowski or Prasowy, I complained that the menu changed from the traditional one, when all the dishes are listed on a huge board, to an electronic one. Everything is left as it is here. This is a plus, because electronic menus remind me of fast food bars.

A tak wyglądał jadłospis. Miałam zamówić pierogi. Kiedyś mi smakowały pierogi z tego baru, ale zobaczyłam, że jedna z klientek je ciekawą potrawę i dzięki tej inspiracji wybrałam ogromnego placka po węgiersku. Jeśli pamiętacie moje wpisy z innych warszawskich barów mlecznych - np. Mokotowski lub Prasowy narzekałam, że w tym drugim jadłospis zmienił się z takiego tradycyjnego, gdy na ogromnej tablicy wypisane są wszystkie potrawy, na elektroniczny. Tutaj wszystko zostało po staremu. To akurat na plus bo elektroniczne Jadłospisy przypominają mi bary z fast foodami.

The decor of the bar has changed a bit since my last visit. New wallpapers have appeared on the walls, all of them refer to the atmosphere of Prague. One is with bears and refers to the local zoo where the bears live, and the wallpaper in the other room shows people partying. The inhabitants of the Praga North district have fun there.

Od mojej ostatniej wizyty nieco zmienił się wystrój baru. Na ścianach pojawiły się nowe tapety, wszystkie nawiązują do klimatu Pragi. Jedna jest z niedźwiedziami i nawiązuje do miejscowego Zoo, w którym mieszkają niedźwiedzie, a na tapecie w drugim pomieszczeniu można zobaczyć imprezujących ludzi. Bawią się tam mieszkańcy Pragi.

Here is my dish. Delicious, warming and filling Hungarian potato pancake. It consists of a huge potato pancake over which a stew in Hungarian sauce has been applied. The stew was made of meat and mushrooms. The pancake was sprinkled with a large amount of grated cheese and parsley.

A to moje danie. Pyszny, rozgrzewający i sycący placek po węgiersku. Składa się z ogromnego placka ziemniaczanego, na który został nałożony gulasz w sosie węgierskim. Gulasz był zrobiony z mięsa i pieczarek. Placek posypano sporą ilością startego sera żółtego i natką pietruszki.

The pancake was very tasty, crunchy. Sometimes it is worth giving a chance to a restaurant that seems poor and with poor food, and in fact the cooks prepare the dish very much like at home, which has its own atmosphere and may appeal to many people.

Placek był bardzo smaczny, chrupiący. Warto czasem dać szansę takiemu miejscu, które wydaje się biedne i z kiepskim jedzeniem, a tak naprawdę kucharki przygotowujące danie gotują bardzo po domowemu, co ma swój klimat i wielu osobom może się spodobać.
