Street exhibition in Warsaw - students of the University of Warsaw in the interwar period / Wystawa uliczna - studentki Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego w okresie międzywojennym

On Wednesday, when I was walking around Krakowskie Przedmieście in Warsaw and when I was passing the buildings of the University of Warsaw, I saw an interesting street exhibition with portraits of women who studied at the University of Warsaw in the interwar period, namely in the years 1918-1921.

Gdy w środę spacerowałam po Krakowskim Przedmieściu w Warszawie i gdy przechodziłam obok budynków Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego zobaczyłam ciekawą wystawę uliczną z sylwetkami kobiet, które studiowały na UW w okresie międzywojennym, a konkretnie w latach 1918-1921.

I immediately noticed the photo of the Nobel Prize winner (twice) - Maria Curie-Skłodowska. Although Maria Curie-Skłodowska did not study at the University of Warsaw, but in Paris, at the Sorbonne. She was mentioned as one of the many Polish women who studied abroad.

Od razu wypatrzyłam portret noblistki (i to dwukrotnej)- Marii Curie-Skłodowskiej. Wprawdzie Maria Curie-Skłodowska nie studiowała na Uniwersytecie Warszawskim tylko w Paryżu, na Sorbonie, ale została wspomniana jako jedna z wielu Polek, które studiowały zagranicą.

Na niektórych zdjęciach widać było studentki podczas zajęć albo na spotkaniach z przedstawicielami ówczesnej władzy.

In this photo you can see the characteristic hats that I associate with the interwar period. In each photo you can also see what clothes and hairstyles were popular back then. Fashion somehow reflects the everyday life of women. In those days, women wore costumes that referred to the pre-war times. They could loosen a bit, because when there was war, the most important thing was the usefulness of the clothes.

Na tym zdjęciu widać charakterakterystyczne kapelusze, które kojarzą mi się z okresem międzywojennym. Na każdym zdjęciu można też zobaczyć jakie ubrania i fryzury były wtedy popularne. Moda w jakiś sposób odzwierciedla życie codzienne kobiet. W tamtych czasach kobiety nosiły stroje, które nawiązywały do czasów przedwojennych. Mogły trochę poluzować, gdy była wojna liczyła się przede wszystkim użyteczność ubrania.

Na tym zdjęciu widać spotkanie studentek z naczelnikiem państwa i naczelnym wodzem międzywojennej Polski - Józefem Piłsudskim.

I've read each of these women's stories. Evening time and dim light created an atmosphere in this place that was conducive to getting to know their fate. Every now and then someone from the passers-by would stop and get acquainted with a fragment of the life of inter-war students of the University of Warsaw.

Czytałam historie każdej tych kobiet. Wieczorna pora i przyciemnione światło tworzyły w tym miejscu atmosferę sprzyjającą poznawaniu ich losów. Co chwila zatrzymywał się ktoś z przechodniów i zapoznawał się z fragmentem życia międzywojennych studentek UW.

Under the photo it was written that the woman with the beads around her neck was named Aleksandra Doney. She studied at the Faculty of Medicine. During her studies, she worked as a nurse. She died of the Spanish flu.

Pod zdjęciem było napisanem że ta kobieta z koralami na szyi nazywała się Aleksandra Doney. Studiowała na Wydziale Lekarskim. W trakcie studiów pracowała jako sanitariuszka. Zmarła na grypę hiszpankę.

This woman was Gizella Teicher. She studied law at the University of Warsaw.

Ta kobieta to była Gizella Teicher. Na Uniwersytecie Warszawskim studiowała prawo.

Behind this smiling face is Maria Dworzaczek, a student of the Faculty of Medicine. It said next to her photo that she was one of the first women with a PhD in medical sciences from the University of Warsaw. Many of these women experienced great hardships living in such troubled times. I read in the lower right corner of the photo that Maria Dworzaczek spent a year in Russia, where she was deported with the whole family.

Za tą uśmiechniętą twarzą skrywa się Maria Dworzaczek, studenka Wydziału Lekarskiego. Przy jej zdjęciu było napisane, że to jedna z pierwszych kobiet z tytułem doktora nauk medycznych na Uniwersytecie Warszawskim. Wiele z tych kobiet doświadczyło ogromych trudności, żyjąc w takich niespojonych czasach. Wyczytałam z boku zdjęcia, że Maria Dworzaczek spędziła rok w Rosji, gdzie została wywieziona z całą rodziną.

In the photo below you can see Józefina Aniela Egiersdorff. In the lower right corner of the photo it was written that she studied at the Faculty of Philosophy, and during the war, she organized secret teaching in her home and helped in treating injured people.

Na zdjęciu poniżej możecie zobaczyć Józefinę Anielę Egiersdorff. W prawym dolnym rogu zdjęcia było napisane, że studiowała na Wydziale Filozoficznym, a w czasie wojny, w swoim domu organizowała tajne nauczanie, pomagała też w opatrywaniu rannych ludzi.
