The "Everyday Forms of Resistance" exhibition at the Ujazdowski Castle in Warsaw / Wystawa "Codzienne formy oporu" w Zamku Ujazdowskim w Warszawie
This exhibition is strong in its message, although among the items that have been presented on it, we can often see ordinary things - for example pillows, rugs, newspapers. However, by reading the information on the walls in the exhibition, we can find out what these things do in places where individual freedom is often restricted.
Like the magical exhibition by Maciej Rauch, this exhibition is also on display at the Ujazdowski Castle. It is enough to enter the next room and we are transferred to a completely different reality.
In the first room of the exhibition, we can read such an introductory text about it:
A return to nature, cultivating histories and being together - during the occupation, almost every gesture can be a manifestation of the strength that allows one to survive and preserve the meaning life. The "Everyday Forms of Resistance" exhibition explores the survival strategies employed in the face of armed conflicts or ecological disasters where hitherto used approaches had failed. Traditionally feminine domains, such as care, tenderness, mindfulness, or nurturing plants are practiced in Palestine, which has been under occupation for over 70 years, but also
in Europe, where they have necome an alternative to social relations based on violence and exploitation.
The first exhibit at the exhibition, which I approached, encouraged me to create my own story on the wall or on paper by imprinting various forms. First, the stamps had to be dipped in ink and soon, for example, symbolic animals, flowers or a face would appear on the wall. It reminds me a bit of the paintings on the rocks of the caves. Such creativity can also be a form of expression of one's thoughts or emotions by people living in the occupied territories.
A bit further there were large cubes with the inscription "insulation materials". It looked a bit like building materials or stored in some warehouse. Various materials are placed on the blocks - magazines describing various forms of resistance, poems printed on sheets, as well as videos to watch. Such austere space is related to the assumptions of the exhibition: "Reduce, Reuse or Recycle". As it was written on the wall, its authors try not to create new rubbish and often use borrowed materials. The same happens in the Palestinian camps, only there such use of various things is associated more with the lack of new products.
In the next room, a navy blue curtain occupied most of it. I found out that you can go inside and there is another installation from the exhibition. You only have to leave your shoes before entering. Inside, I was greeted by a very pleasant space. Lots of huge, satin cushions... and Palestinian lullabies were played from the speakers. They were very nice. Most of them were sung by women, but I heard men too. You could lie down on these cushions or just sit comfortably on them and listen to lullabies in such a safe space. However, it does feel sorry to read on the wall, which is why these lullabies were put on this exhibition. It turns out that in many camps people are forbidden to sing them, and they do so in danger as a resistance.
In this room, however, you could read a poem about bats and photos of bats taken at night with the trees in the background. There were many emotions in the poem and references to the internal difficult experiences of the person in the poem. The darkness in the photos increased the feeling of these emotions.
The exhibition also includes a part for children presenting a journey to Palestine of little girls and their drawings made during the trip. There are postcards on the table. You can write something there and put it in a box, thus passing the message on, probably to children from Palestinian camps.
