On the way to the Acropolis - through a whitewashed labyrinth and small alleys

avatar

Hey guys,

today I want to tell you about a very special trip of mine - about the island of Rhodes and our trip to Lindos.
The Greek island of Rhodes is the largest of the Greek Dodecanese islands. It is especially known for its great beaches, ancient ruins and buildings from the time of occupation by the Knights of the Order of St. John during the Crusades. I've always wanted to go there (but definitely in the summer;)) and I made that wish come true. I am interested, as you may know, especially in the history behind historical buildings. Often I can imagine the place as it looked here several hundred years ago, what about you?;)
About Rhodes I want to tell you more in another post. Today its about our trip from Rhodes to Lindos - with a boat.

Our day trip from Rhodes to Lindos

From Rhodes to Lindos you can also go by train or by car. By car it takes about an hour. We decided to take a boat. Lying on the sun deck during the trip was then a little more appealing;) So we have virtually made a day trip and booked a tou8r, but were very free in our timing. This was very important for us.

The boat tour started at Mandraki harbor at 8:50 in the morning (also a very nice sight with a great story behind it!). That was still a relatively humane time, what do you say;) Along the Baltic coast we sailed then from Rhodes in the direction of Lindos. In between we saw lots of beaches for swimming. Mostly it were small bays that had very beautiful rock formations to offer. The water was crystal clear. And we had great weather too. Perfect to visit Lindos and the Acropolis.

Even on the outward trip, I was looking forward to the return trip, where we were promised that we would stop at a couple of the beaches to swim. But of course I was looking forward to the Acropolis and Lindos all the more.

Lindos - many great sights in a town full of whitewashed houses

Lindos - I always wanted to visit this breathtaking city. The absolute landmark of the city is the Acropolis, located on a rock. Already in the harbor, when you have not even docked, you can see the structure already in the not too distance. It has enormous archways from the 4th century with reliefs, which were created around 280 BC. There is even a temple to visit, the temple of Athena Lindia. In addition, there is a fortress of the Knights of St. John and the Church of St. Mary. In between there are lots of whitewashed houses - who hasn't seen these house facades on a vacation brochure or on social media?!
Now it was time to take a closer look at the Acropolis.

Do you also think that this boat looks like a pirate ship? And then in front of such a great scenery with the Acropolis in the background

On the way to the Acropolis - those who don't want to hike can ride a donkey

I was so excited to see the Acropolis. The closer we got to the Acropolis, the faster I ran up the path. Past the many whitewashed houses, nicely furnished cafes and restaurants along the way. But first I did not want to eat anything, but only admire the Acropolis. For all those who do not want to walk to the top, there was also a pleasant solution: For a little money you can ride up on a donkey. Would any of you have done that ?;). I then preferred to walk, especially after the boat tour, which had also taken some time.

A whitewashed maze of small alleys - designed to confuse pirates

The photos you can see below I took on the way up. Often we passed smaller gardens with beautiful flower pots. Lindos is very characterized by cubic houses. These stretch down the slope below the Acropolis. In fact, these many small alleys, which almost seem like a maze to me - and yes, I got lost (but that happens to me all the time), are one of the most photographed places in all of Greece.

I got a better feeling when I heard that tourists always get lost here - and the small alleys were specially arranged and designed to confuse pirates. An interesting historical fact that I will definitely remember - and it worked!

The Church of St. Mary in Lindos

During our way up we could also admire St. Mary's Church. Even though we didn't have the time to have a closer look at it, we were advised by some to visit it again, if we would come to Lindos again. The church was built in the 15th century. It is especially known for its fresco paintings.
For those of you who don't know what this is, fresco or fresh painting is a technique of wall painting. It involves applying pigments previously soaked in water to fresh lime plaster. When the lime is carbonated, the pigments are stably incorporated into the plaster.
The frescoes of the church show the story of creation in the upper strip (for this reason alone, I will certainly take a closer look at the church again). The band below depicts the twenty highest church feasts. Again below that, the Akathistos hymn is shown. Below that are images of saints. The floor of the church is laid with ordinary pebbles. I also find this very interesting.

To show you the view from the top of the Acropolis and to tell you more about this impressive building would have blown up this post. I will tell you more about this in the next few days. And there is so much to tell! Then it continues with part 2 to the Acropolis. Be curious about the view, it was really breathtaking. How did you like the post? Feel free to write me your feedback in the comments. See you next time!
